2026 Week 8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Rankings

DarthYoda2594 2 If I'm going to put BYU #1, they arguably got shafted twice on the same play to beat #1 on the road. Hardly worthy of punishment. In a week where Miami, Utah, UCLA didn't look good, why not? Strange to think this game was a 1-2 matchup though.

Maladroit44 4 Okay, let's get this out of the way: no, I don't care about the extra second, because the clock also *started* over half a second late. By rule, Notre Dame probably should've gotten an extra play, but by common sense, they ran a play that took ~4.1 seconds with the clock starting at :04; they really have nothing to complain about. That being said, a four-point road loss against the new #1 is by no means bad, at least not to me. People really don't like it when you say this, but a team that loses in the last minute against 1-2 playoff contenders and obliterates all its other opponents? Is actually, shockingly, a playoff-level team.

Doogitywoogity 5 Painful loss, you can talk about officiating but I’ll be honest it’s way less egregious than the Miami - FSU issues. BYU nearly collapsed the stadium cheering the refs had to just make it out alive. If you can beat Miami and the somehow still alive SMU, you can still stay ranked enough to get in. If you lose either though you’re gonna drop like a stone.

The Fighting Irish have a right to be aggrieved with how their high-profile matchup against the now-#1 Cougars ended. A bigger issue, however, is the tendency of both playcalling coordinators (Mike Denbrock on offense, Chris Ash on defense) to overthink themselves out of more simple and effective solutions, and no second returned to the game clock was going to fix the stupidity of calling a fade out on a short field for a TD in the dying moments. Ash was also left flat-footed on defense, and BYU could've easily gone up more earlier had they been more efficient in the redzone. Get that fixed over the next two weeks, and Miami at home is a very, very tempting avenue back into the top 3.

BYU deserves a lot of credit for their preparation and performance, but ND deserves zero praise anywhere. Soft playcalling (on both sides of the ball!), Carr and Denbrock completely misaligned, skill players completely mismanaged between no WR rotation thousands of feet above sea level and abandoning both Nolan James and Jonaz Walton. They should score on Miami… but I doubt ND’s ability to keep their playmakers in check with the soft zones. Even at home.

sgtshenanigans 9 Tough loss for Notre Dame. The offense had some really nice plays but struggled to finish drives especially drives that started in plus territory. The Defense struggled in the first half but made some adjustments and only let up 7 in the second half but did not clutch up when they needed to and let BYU score a touchdown on a long time consuming drive. I feel like this game was really close if Notre Dame had done a better job converting in the redzone they win but credit to BYUs defense they did well to cover NDs TEs and Receivers in the redzone.

Justanother_0 13 Promise made, promise kept. I had Notre Dame at #15 last week under the assumption that they'd lose the BYU game, and while I pinky promised to not drop them for losing, they actually surprised me with how competent they looked down the stretch, especially on offense. Their running game looked solid, and CJ Carr played a good enough point guard to drive down the field. That being said, Carr has the makings of an extremely talented QB that just needs another year in the oven. The Irish earned my respect this weekend, and if they beat Miami then they'll probably be in the top 8.

Regarding the final play of the game, I am typically in the school of thought of "don't let the game come down to a ref call", but the ref's not being able to tell the time is inexcusable. At the same time, it's no guarantee that ND would've scored on a hypothetical final play, so what more can be said?

nw____ 18 Is their best win the 41-13 week 1 victory over Wisconsin? I do have a little bit of sympathy for them with the last play against BYU—I am ok with the no call on the DPI, but it definitely seems like there should’ve been 1sec left on the clock. We’ll never know if they would’ve scored if they had another chance, but that’s unfortunately the way it goes in CFB. That said, they had the other 59m:59s to work with and have no one to blame but themselves for being in that spot/leaving the game up to the refs. If they are the team they’re supposed to be, they should’ve won by…what, like 13? 20? They didn’t. They can absolutely rocket back up the rankings with a good win against Miami and, to a lesser extent, SMU. If this is too low of a ranking, it will work itself out by the end of the season.
HieloLuz 21 Bucket E is the beginning of the teams without a quality win.

Notre Dame may have been cheated out of one more play @BYU, and the loss itself won't hold them back that much. But they lack any quality wins due to Wisconsin dropping from that distinction.

JKess207 1 Like I said, the model needs work. I ran the numbers multiple times, and even did the math by hand. Doesn’t matter, the model loves the Irish. They’re #1 in Net EPA/Play and /Drive, and #2 in Net Adjusted EPA/Play. Record aside (and let’s be honest, there was some fuckery going on in Provo), the Irish are one of the most efficient teams in the country.
LookAtMaxwell 1 finishes 1st–4th in 8 of 10 brackets
The loss at BYU (28-24) is Notre Dame’s only rule loss. Its 35 rule wins include Wisconsin, which it beat 41-13. Notre Dame is #1 mainly because of its simulated games: it wins 97% of them against the field and 88% against the top 25, the best of any team. It also has the best expected scoring margin (40.5 for, 15.5 against).

The simple scoring model used may be showing its weakness. But Losing to undefeated BYU really doesn't hurt Notre Dame in the bracket system used. Only, if they happen to end up facing each other does it hurt them. Call this a quality loss -- only when BYU starts to loss to other teams will it start to hurt Notre Dame more.

_THE__BOULDER_ 4 Losing by 4 on the road to a good BYU team. Per the Big 12, ND was owed an extra attempt, even if the PI no-call was justified, as there was supposed to be 1 more second on the clock. I still think ND is good, and they seem to have developed their downfield passing a bit which is good. Theoretically, the only real test on left on their schedule should be Miami. If they don't beat Miami, I'm fairly certain they won't make the CFB unless there are a lot of 3-loss teams that are in the playing field (which is entirely possible given the chaos that has occurred so far this season). But, for right now, this team barely lost on the road to another top 10 team and I think deserves a top-5 spot (prior to this weekend, I had ND at 3, BYU at 6). Because the game was so close, and on the road, I don't feel that it is warranted to drop ND much farther than that.

In all seriousness they played hard and took advantage of BYU’s mistakes as best they could ( except for the interception). Sure you probably got hosed at the end, but don’t go three and out after getting gifted an interception and it doesn’t come down to it. And for the fans who are tuned out or calling the season a wash chill out; it’s one loss. Beat or keep it close with Miami and you should be fine.
