Lane Kiffin may have just saved his first season in Baton Rouge with a blowout victory against a Kamario Taylor-less Mississippi State this past weekend. While the close losses to both his old team and Kentucky certainly sting and cast a ceiling on their ranking, potential still exists for them to sneak their way into the playoffs. Hell, with enough chaos, perhaps a berth in the SEC Title game isn't out of the question. But a lot relies upon QB Sam Leavitt continuing to increase his chemistry with his weapons on offense and the trench play continuing to manhandle their opposition.

Maladroit44 23 As mentioned above, the AP Poll ranked five two-loss teams from the SEC this week. I really don't love that, and I think the downsides with Florida, Texas, and *especially* Mizzou outweigh the arguments for them to earn a spot, but I am still reluctantly ranking LSU. Unlike those teams, the Tigers' losses were both to ranked opponents by close margins, which to me suggests they're probably a top-25 caliber team themselves. Without a win better than Mississippi State, though, it's hard to have much confidence in them. Fortunately, this is a problem that will solve itself: they play Alabama, Texas, and Tennessee back-to-back-to-back in a few weeks' time. You've just gotta resist the urge to assume, wrongly, that we've seen anything truly impressive from LSU until then.

JKess207 4 Another double-take, the model is a lot higher on LSU than I am. They’re #1 in Net Adjusted EPA/Play, which carries their ranking here. The only thing that hurts them is their relative lack of success on the ground, coming in at #49 in rush success rate.

LSU is the oddest result in the top 10. It has no rule wins over top-25 teams, and its losses to Ole Miss and Kentucky chain into rule losses to Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. It ranks this high on simulated strength: it wins 95% against the field and 77% against the top 25. Lopsided wins like 51-10 over Clemson and 31-0 over Mississippi State drive that.

quantum_jedi 13 (60.81, +7) The Tigers get a huge jump in the rankings after smashing a Mississippi State without Kamario Taylor or Fluff Bothwell. Good showing by the Tigers, but should be taken with a grain of salt given the context. Very intriguing matchup next week as LSU travels to Auburn who is coming off a massive upset over Georgia.

GrimmacingGrinny 20 LSU beat Mississippi State, and picked up its best win of the season. That being said, Mississippi State was down Taylor and Fluff but LSU shut them out regardless. LSU has 2 losses to teams in my top 10, but also no wins over teams in my top 25, leaving them in an interesting position.

_THE__BOULDER_ 25 LSU jumps back in the rankings for me at #25. At 5-2, I definitely think LSU is a decent-to-good team, but they have not won the hardest games that have been on their schedule, so that's why they fell out for me. LSU obviously started out hot in destroying Clemson, had a rough first half vs LTech before taking off in the second half, lost to Ole Miss, destroyed a TAMU team that has not been performing well, tuned up against McNeese, then lost in OT @ Kentucky, before getting a clean sheet while dismantling a Miss St team that is currently a shell of its former self due to injury. Although I am certain Miss St is a decent-to-good team when fully healthy, none of LSU's wins have been against particularly impressive teams.

I think ESPN agrees with me here that as, by the numbers, LSU is in a weird spot, and I don't think has earned much more than possibly being a top 20-25 team. LSU is 27th in SOR and 25th in SOS. Despite their two losses and no marquee wins as of yet, FPI has them at #8. However, LSU is 2nd in Remaining SOS, with games against Auburn, Alabama, Texas, Tennessee, and Arkansas. They absolutely have chances to prove their worth over this stretch, although my guess is that they will pick up 3 out of those 5 games. Perhaps I am harsher than other pollsters, but I foresee an 8-4 to 9-3 year for the Tigers.
