Well good morning Provo - BYU wakes up at the top. Their defense is now the best rated unit in cfb and it held ND just long enough to get their biggest win since the Ty Detmer days. The only speed bump between them and the playoff is Utah in a few weeks. Monster day for the (Monster) Big 12.

Unfortunately, there was a lot of contraversial reffing at the end of some of biggest matchups that left them feeling a bit inconclusive. Dealing too much with hypotheticals opens up a can of worms that can't definitively be closed, so I'm not really going to factor in the reffing mistakes, even if they personally make me feel a bit sickened.

So then, BYU stays undefeated with a regulation win over last week's #2 and another win over Arizona on the resume. After all the losing that happened this weekend, that's impressive enough to be #1.

After a wild night in Provo (I heard the Mormons broke out the special milk for this one) and a little (read: a lot) bit of Big 12 ref incompetence, the Cougars sit at 6-0 with the best SOR in the nation. Does this make them truly the best team? Maybe not, but no one can top their results to date, and their playcalling was truly inspired in their efforts to topple the Fighting Irish, with QB Bear Bachmeier managing to throw, receive, and run in a touchdown all in the same game. Add in a strong win that continues to age well vs the Wildcats from Arizona, and BYU sits at the summit of this ballot. Now, just kindly ignore what's happened to the last 2 teams that have held the position these past 2 weeks...

Refball aside, BYU proved that they belong in the upper echelon of the sport with their showing against the Irish at home. Bear Bachmeier is one of the best QB's in the sport right now with a unique playstyle that could very well lead the Cougars deep into January, and their defense is top 3 in the nation.

MVOS said it best though, "You can have a good offense, you can have a good defense, but special teams win national titles." The Cougars are lucky that their punting miscues only costed them six points.

Undefeated, close wins over Notre Dame without LJ Martin and Arizona, as well as a more dominant win over Iowa State without LJ Martin.

Well this was a bit of a shock. Even if we won I had no intention to put them this high, but the events of last week outside our game kinda left me no choice. This ranking may not stick but I don’t care. The path to the playoffs is much easier now and this season can truly be special. Don’t screw it up for me cougs.

The obvious marquee win from this week against Notre Dame, as well as a win against Arizona that is very solid boosts BYU over Miami for me. While it is an incredibly wide open race, I think BYU is deserving of the vote based on their overall resume to this point.

Close win, but a win nonetheless over (now #4) ND. Only Miami could arguably be #1 (should be an undefeated) but they needed two overtimes to beat an under .500 Florida St team. #1 BYU is real.

A top 10 win and a top 25 win, with no losses, put BYU head and shoulders above any other team
