2023 Preseason Ohio State Buckeyes Rankings

crownebeach 1 The nice thing about the Buckeyes is that their defense is 20th in returning production. When you have a coach with a pronounced tendency toward one side of the ball, having all your youth be on that side is a good thing because it means you're not likely to have a lot of growing pains.
HHcougar 1 Ohio State is going 12-0, who knows about the playoffs

bretticus33 2 Ohio State will be trotting out a new QB, but with a solid OL, a strong RB room, and the best WR group in FBS, whomever starts will have more than enough support. The problem is neither Kyle McCord or Devin Brown clearly pulled ahead in spring. The defense was better in 2022, but needs to improve in the big games in 2023 after failures against Michigan and Georgia. The talent is all over the field though.

NyquillusDillwad20 2 Although UM won the B1G the past two seasons, OSU still feels like the team to beat in the conference. Even an average QB will allow this offense to be one of the best in the country.
oghawks18 2 QB and OL will gel by November, they beat Michigan and make the CCG

kamiller2020 3 I'm interested to see how Hartline and Key handle the offense the first 3 weeks before putting them at #2 over Michigan. Hartline is expected to take over playcalling duties this season and will have a new QB to work with. Whether Brown or McCord wins the job, they'll be throwing to the best WR core in CFB headlined by future top 5 draft pick Marvin Harrison Jr. Emeke Egbuka is a 1st rounder in 2024 along with veteran Julian Fleming; the freshman Carnell Tate is drawing rave reviews from Columbus but expect Jayden Ballard and Xavier Johnson to also play quality reps at least early on. TreVeyon Henderson when healthy is an elite RB along with Miyan Williams will be one of the top RB duos in CFB. However, tackle is a massive question mark and while good things have been said about Josh Simmons he's still unknown. Defensively, the Buckeyes have missed the dynamic EDGE talent they had pre-COVID and are hoping Jack Sawyer and/or JT Tuimoloau become certified top 10 NFL draft talents this season. Tommy Eichenberg returns and is healthy, which is huge for OSU's linebacker room and while there is a ton of experience in the Buckeye secondary they're looking for one or two guys to become standouts. This is a roster with title potential however things need to mesh on the defensive side and the OLine needs to perform in order to get there, especially with road dates to South Bend and Arbor plus a sneakily tough month of October.

FourteenClocks 2 The only team to almost clip the big dawg last year (yeah, Mizzou was scary, but Georgia was one great time-out away from actually losing to OSU) #2-4 are the only teams I trust to undress UGA in the CFP setting.
GarethSchilly 2 Played the best game against the best team last year when it mattered most, also reloaded. Not worried about QB position.

ScaratheBear 3 The Buckeyes were a missed field goal away from playing in, and likely winning, the CFB playoff last year. A tough loss to swallow, the Buckeyes return this year with the Nation's best player, Marvin Harrison Jr., but have serious questions elsewhere on the roster. Who will replace Heisman runner up CJ Stroud? Who takes the reign at both offensive Tackle spots? Can the defense step up in the big games in year 3 of Jim Knowles? The team is stacked, but can it come together to be the best in the country?

throwaway_6786 3 A few major question marks, but they're a model of consistency and Ryan Day has shown that he can run an offense with the best of them. I'm willing to give the Buckeyes the benefit of the doubt for now, but they could just as easily be #4 or #5. We'll see how McCord, the O-line, and the secondary shake out.

TinderForMidgets 4 Ohio State is also stacked with plenty of talent but is trying to replace CJ Stroud. Marvin Harrison Jr. is elite and should put up plenty of points no matter who is in charge. They have a lot of potential but I rank them behind other elite powers because they still have a lot of question marks at the most important position in football.

JetoGrov 19 Yep. I am Buckeye (though I joined the Nut Cult later in life and for life reasons, so I'm not weird/crazy like the other ones) so this may be a reverse jinx but I feel storm clouds in Columbus. I really like Ryan Day, he's made it easier to become a Buckeye fan later in life (looks at Urban), but I can't help but feel he's about to get run out of town (John Cooper scarred these people). I think the defense could be really good-great, the skill positions are incredible, the QB should be adequate...but I'm going darkest timeline here: THE o-line never gels, McCord aint really it and Brown isnt either, Notre Dame catches them early in the year...Wisconsin is able to produce a marquee moment in Fick's first year, Penn St and Michigan both dominate the line of scrimmage. I don't think OSU loses all those games but they could, they'll certainly lose one of them, likely (in my opinion) two-three of them. But we'll see.
