70stang 5 In the final 2022 Poll (both AP and /r/CFB), Alabama was ranked one spot above Tennessee despite having an identical record and a loss to the Vols, as well as to a team the Vols stomped. My preseason poll does not reflect anything about the coming 2023 season, just carries over some slightly adjusted results from 2022 until my resume-based model has some games to work with.

Corgi_Koala 9 Love Tennessee as the second best team in the East, but Milton still needs to show consistency and there's a pretty big gap between them and UGA. If they beat UGA though, the sky is the limit with the offensive firepower on this team.

ikindalikelemons 9 I think Joe Milton is a greatly improved passer. But he is a gunslinger, and gunslingers are dangerous. If this offense can keep it up from last year, though, they could have a good run in them. Bonus: they get Georgia at home.

bretticus33 12 Tennessee was a surprise team in 2022 and they return a lot of players and production from that season. The most notable change will be at QB where Joe Milton takes the reigns. He lit up the Orange Bowl against Clemson, where he showed off his physical skills. If he can find more consistency and develop the mental side of the position more, which he can with Josh Heupel, then Tennessee should be pushing for a NY6 bowl again.

NyquillusDillwad20 13 Tennessee could be a CFP darkhorse if Joe Milton can play well. Unfortunately he hasn't been very consistent in the past so I'm hesitant to place them any higher at the time being.

HHcougar 15 Tennessee has a lot of expectations for the year. They don't live up to them but have a good year regardless. I still don't believe Tennessee was ever consistently really good.

FourteenClocks 6 What a year these guys had. They had a couple of embarrassing outings--as does anybody who beats Saban in the regular season, it seems, as an Ole Miss fan I am quite aware of the curse that ties itself to that achievement--but boy, Heupel might be their answer. Getting to host Georgia is a huge story, and they could be perfect heading into that matchup. Put on your overalls--this team is fun again.

TinderForMidgets 6 The Volunteers lose Hendon Hooker but get an experienced transfer in Joe Milton. Perhaps the change of scenary will do him wonders. The Volunteers are talented and at least have relative stability at the most important position in all of football. The ranking could be lower but Tennessee has been recruiting well perhaps they'll see some on that recruiting impact on-field results.

ScaratheBear 11 Those damn Gamecocks. If not for laying a fat egg in Colombia, Josh Heupel and the Vols may have been in the playoff instead of Ohio State. The biggest question for the Vols? Can Joe Milton fill Hendon Hookers shoes? If not, can Nico Iamaleava step up in his Freshman year? The Vols must navigate a mine filled schedule, with UTSA, Texas A&M, Alabama, and of course Georgia. Other problems are creeping around too. The Vols must replace 3 members of last years good offensive line. More importantly, can the secondary improve from... lets be honest, outright atrocious to serviceable? The ceiling for the Vols is high, but the floor is low too.

throwaway_6786 12 This might be a little harsh towards Tennessee, but losing Hooker & Hyatt + bad defensive performances + not having too much sustained success in recent years leaves me to drop Tennessee quite a bit from their 2022 finish at #5. We'll see how the Vols handle the pressure of following up a great season, but I have confidence that Josh Heupel can keep the offense rolling with Milton, Wright, Small, White, McCoy, and a solid O-line. The main reason I dropped them 7 spots is their defense, so if the Vols win games and look better on defense, they'll be back in the top 10 before you can say "Rocky Top".

charmingcharles2896 16 Joe Milton will never be the QB that his predecessor, Hendon Hooker was. The dude is like an ICBM with no guidance computer, all power no precision. Other than that, the Vols return a lot of talent and may win a fair number of games. Joe Milton holds them back though.

JetoGrov 18 Losses to Bama and UGA seem guaranteed. Likely another loss or two hiding in there between UF, UTSA, UK, Mizzou. The irrational TN fans will see this as a disappointment, but Heupel has things moving in the right direction, this program would have killed for an Outback Bowl 4 years ago.
