bretticus733	22	UNC’s spot is dependent on two things: first is the continued excellent play of Drake Maye who turned into a star his first season. He’s already getting first round love from the NFL and will be eligible after the 2023 season. The second stipulation is better defense. They were awful last season, especially towards the end of the season where UNC lost 4 straight after starting off 9-1. Drake Maye may not be enough to carry UNC by himself if the defense can’t stop anyone again.

Their offensive is excellent and Drake Maye occasionally looked like one of the best players in college football. However, as the old saying goes - "Defense wins championships".

charmingcharles2896	23	Drake Maye is a beast, but that defense was shockingly bad last season. If the defense takes a big leap forward, then expect the Tar Heels to be a big player in the ACC. If the defense doesn't improve, then don't expect them to win more than seven games.

throwaway_6786	23	The main reason the Tar Heels are in the top 25 is Drake Maye. Love him or hate him, the kid oozes talent. Still, one player, no matter how good he is, can carry a team entirely by himself to the upper echelon of college football. Until the rest of the UNC team can rise up and show that they can take on Clemson/FSU, I'm not ready to put them any higher than this for a preseason poll. Beating South Carolina in Columbia would be a nice start. As an aside, watch for Power Echols and Cedric Gray this year, they should be a powerful LB duo once again.
