2017 Week 2 Ohio State Buckeyes Rankings

stripes361 1 By halftime of their Thursday night game against the Hoosiers, I had already mentally relegated the Buckeyes to the bottom part of the Top 5. Even with a win, that first-half performance posed a bunch of question marks about Kevin Wilson's offense and Greg Schiano's secondary. Fortunately for Ohio State, their second half was dominant enough that I'm willing to hold off on dropping the Buckeyes for now. I can't promise that they will stay at #1 as long as they win but they can keep the top spot if they learn to play more consistently.

Arsenal7X 2 A plucky Indiana team gave them fits for about 2.5 quarters but the staff made some incredible adjustments at half time which allowed the incredible athleticism of the Buckeyes to take over. For my money, the Meyer/Schiano/Wilson triumvirate is the best combination of HC/DC/OC in the country, and with the talent at their disposal, this team can go really far. Putting up 600 yards against what was a top 30 defense last year is no small feat.
beerslingerjay 2 OSU was able to weather the early onslaught by an Indiana team that seemed very "up to the challenge." The talent gap was very apparent, though, as the game proceeded.
Bill3ffinMurray 2 A sluggish start on the road against the Hoosiers had me thinking that Ohio State was going to succumb to the Chaos God. Nevertheless, the Hoosiers ran out of steam and the Buckeyes rallied to open the season 1-0. No sense dropping them for staying close at halftime on the road against a competitive Indiana team.
BlueFalcon89 2
BoboIsDead 2 (-) They're Ohio State.
BosskOnASegway 2 Despite a slow start against Indiana, they still managed to win big and cover the spread.  I have questions regarding the secondary as Indiana's massive wide receivers caused them fits, but I expect this will be resolved as the season progresses.  Huge test next week at Oklahoma will make or break this assessment.

BunnySelfDestruct 2 The Indiana game was way too close, but as someone deeply invested in the B1G I know the Indiana game can be a lottery with they way their offensive and defensive systems work. Their mid game adjustments make me think they'll find a winning combination by the time they need it.

Cobainism 2 OSU struggled early with the Hoosiers, but I believe it had to do with Urban trying to lock away the playbook from Oklahoma next week. But like any great head coach, Urban made appropriate halftime adjustments (a foreign concept to Kevin Sumlin) and his team dominated in the second half.

Extra_Excrement 2 It was starting to lookalike 2007 again with #2 down to Indiana in the third quarter. However, in classic Ohio State fashion they pulled away after keeping it close for nearly 75% of the game. Even with Indiana's one-handed magician catches, they were unable to upset the Buckeyes. Dobbins looked incredible and Weber's return will certainly add to a run-game that already looks dominant.

jmac_21 2 Ohio State stumbled a bit early, but I'm willing to give them a pass because it was a Thursday road conference game. They really poured it on late in the game.
Jpkun 2 Began the game slow, but their high level of talent shone through as the game went on. Offense needed some time to get into rhythm, but that should be expected.
kdcoltred 2 I'm first half Ohio State, and I lost 31-0 to Clemson last year. I'm second half Ohio State, and I win a national title in 2017.
kermic_the_frog 2
Khavanon 2 (0) 49-21 over conference opponent Indiana. Not a great start, but they had a better opponent than the teams that follow them, and it was the first game.

WhiteBaseCoat 2 I have mixed feelings on Ohio State. Their defensive line looks incredible - it did not pass me by that Indiana completely gave up on running the ball at some point - and their defense seemed to crack down on Indiana's passing game eventually, perhaps because Indiana completely gave up on running the ball at some point. I feel that J.T. Barrett leaves a lot to be desired, but they did pull off a bit of an Alabama effect as the game wore on, ultimately pounding away with the run game either because of fatigue or halftime adjustments or both. And I do think that Indiana will have a surprisingly strong defense this year, just looking at their experience. To summarize, I wasn't overly impressed with the Buckeyes, but they were playing on Thursday night and they had the common decency to play a team whose best quality is not "it could be worse, we could be FCS" or "it could be worse, we could be Division II." Combine that with their talent and experience and I have a hard time seeing how anybody else deserves this spot.

corundum9 3 Slow start against Indiana, but OSU is in a reload situation at this point. The CBs seem like a slight liability against bigger-bodied receivers, but the the rest of the defense should be able to mitigate any concerns on the boundary. JT Barrett isn't exactly the best passer and it may take some time for the offensive scheme to gel under new coordinator Kevin Wilson. Michael Jordan will also have to improve his game from last year. Nevertheless, OSU has as much talent and coaching pedigree as any of the other top 5 teams and are the favorite to win the Big Ten. The winner of OSU/Michigan will be primed for a spot in the playoffs.

JeromesNiece 3 LW: 2; performed slightly below expectations
kamikazeguy 3 Dropped a bit after a poor showing against Indiana, I think the Buckeyes showed some some weakness here.  A porous secondary does not bode well for their title hopes, and neither does having to dig into the playbook in order to beat Indiana.  Growing pains could accompany the new Kevin Wilson offense this season, time will tell whether true freshman RB JK Dobbins and Ohio State's fantastic D-line can pick up the slack.

mjacksongt 3 Secondary got a little exposed in the first half, but the whole team looked great the second half.  Would be #2 if they had shown up for the first half.

BabyBladder 4 Interesting week 1 for the Buckeyes. The key for this team is how willing they are to use Barrett in the ground game. In the 1st half they looked 1 dimensional without him willing to tuck and run, or keep on the read. The 2nd half they punished Indiana's defense with their versatility. How much of their week 1 (early) struggle was due towards looking to next week? How much was their playcalling holding back to keep some surprises? How much prep went into Indiana versus Oklahoma the last few weeks? This week will be very telling.

Ticklebump 4 First half stumbles, turned it on in the second half. It feels like I'm writing the review from the 2016 game when they beat my Hokies. Great, now I'm gonna go drink.

KobeOrNotKobe 8
T-Thugs 8 Opened up the year with a road win over Indiana. They struggled early but ended up winning big. Indiana looked like they may have a decent team, at least a decent offense. Buckeyes can solidify themselves near the top of the poll if they beat Oklahoma next week.
xelphin 8 Ohio State drops due to getting a real good scare from unranked Indiana. That score does NOT accurately tell how close that game was.
