2017 Week 2 Michigan Wolverines Rankings

Main Poll Voters

User Rank Reason
Aeschylus_ 2 Second best victory of the weekend. Made Florida look like crap.
BabyBladder 2 As I stated countless times over the off season, the preseason expectation for Michigan was far too low. With that level of talent and that level of coaching, this is clearly a top 5 team. Might be over-reaction of the year, but this season will determine whether Michigan can compete with the likes of Ohio State, Bama, FSU, and Clemson. The best teams lose players and replace them immediately, rebuilding years don't exist for elite CFB programs. I think Michigan under Harbaugh is one of these programs, and the Florida game certainly supported that theory. Those looking just at the box score will miss out on the details. Without two pick 6's (one of them deflected), Michigan dominated. Well rounded passing and run game, solid oline, and a fantastic defense. They get after the QB and do brilliantly at disguising their coverage, perhaps the best in CFB in that regard. However, we really didn't get to see how good their secondary is because of the front 7 domination last game. Going on purely week 1 results, Michigan looked like the second best team.

GilBrandt 2 Michigan did a great job and I left Florida out because I would like to see them figure something out on offense
hokies220 2 I value their win over Florida, albeit a half suspended Florida, higher than Ohio State over Indiana. Note, my top four will always be four teams from different conferences barring extreme circumstances.

corundum9 4 Michigan's win over Florida was the second most impressive victory of week 1. The defense reloaded from last year and has hard-hitting speed across the board. Don Brown can scheme with the best of them and I expect their defense to be a top 5 outfit all year. The offense is a little more suspect, especially at RT. The WRs are young but talented and diverse in skill-set. There are a plethora of options at TE. Higdon, Evans, and Isaac complete a great RB group. Speight will have to cut down on the critical turnovers and improve his deep ball if they want to win the Big Ten.

Cobainism 7 I know folks might take umbrage to this ranking, but a blowout win in every aspect but on the scoreboard (thanks to QB Wilton Speight forgetting Michigan was not wearing blue uniforms) vs. a ranked P5 teams carries a hell lot more weight than beating Tulsa, Utah State, or Rutgers. Despite losing 10 starters on defense, DC Don Brown continues to show why he's the best in the business, as his youngsters hindered Florida's air attack and eliminated the run game. Speight absolutely needs to stop overthrowing the football if Michigan wants to win the B1G, because otherwise the talent of future stars like WR Tarik Black and WR Donovan Peoples-Jones will be wasted . Finally, K Quinn Nordin, aka Harbaugh's sleepover buddy, is my new crush.

jmac_21 7 Michigan is good, makes me wish I had gone with my gut and put them in the top 5 to start the season. They'll need slightly better QB play going forward, not sure how many games a team can win after throwing back to back pick-6's.
lebaronslebaron 7 Beat a good Florida team, but Speight was less than impressive.

relax_on_the_mat 7 The score was not reflective of the feel of the game IMO. It was a close game until late in the 3rd quarter. Michigan's defense was good but clearly has some work to do. I'm not thrilled about Harbaugh taking Speight out early in the game and causing uncertainty at QB.

Ticklebump 7 Pulled it out against the Gators. That win will look great at the end of the season but it was sneakily easy to win game with all the Florida suspensions.
WhiteBaseCoat 7 Like LSU, Michigan is not experienced, but they are very talented, and they return their QB. Plus HARBAHUFGH. They also played and soundly beat a team that doesn't suck, no matter how much I stab my Jim McElwain voodoo doll. That being said, Speight did throw two pick-6s, and it's not like Florida was putting any world-beaters out there under center either to challenge Michigan's young defense. It's something to keep an eye on, and I'm only cautiously optimistic, but I have a feeling that Michigan is going to have a bit more of a reload than a rebuild - they won't reload with Alabama-level effectiveness, don't get me wrong, but who does?

BosskOnASegway 9 Was Florida's offense truly anemic or is Michigan's defense the cream of the crop?  The first half the offense struggled with turnovers, but in the second half the got going.  Michigan looked like the top tier program we have come to expect under Harbaugh.
brobroma 9
BunnySelfDestruct 9 There are a lot of questions about their offense. Florida was depleted. But they absolutely shut down the Gators on defense, Strong quality win, need to keep reminding myself that this is not the Florida team that everyone else will play.
CarbonCamaroZL1 9 Appeared to have a #1 defense against what was widely considered a "strong offensive line". Only allowed 3 points on defense and scored one touchdown through a fumble with 2 other forced/recovered fumbles. The offense looked very good. The run game is very smash-mouth football. Speight looked good in the second half with only two real issues. His first half was very bad. Constantly overthrowing the WRs resulting in 2 pick sixes. Had those not happened, the game could have easily been a 40+ points to 3 blow out. Once Speight and the WRs dropping passes issues are fixed (primarily some head games and experience needed) this team could turn out to be a playoff-bound team. But they need to prove more before moving up any further.

Jpkun 9 Michigan's defense gave up a field goal in the opening drive and then largely shut down Florida's offense. Michigan's defense has been able to replace key starters from last year and shut down a Florida offense that was supposed to be improved from last year. However, it remains unclear whether Michigan's defense is good or Florida's offense is just bad. Michigan's offense showed a little bit of improvement, playing against a Florida defense that was expected to be quite good--the offense was able to establish the run game and other than the two back-to-back pick-6s resulting in 14 of Florida's 17 points, Michigan's offense was quite good at moving the ball. Where they struggled is with getting the ball in the end-zone.
Khavanon 9 (+5) 33-17 over previous #12 Florida. Winners of the second most important game of the week.

Arsenal7X 10 Florida's offense is worse than my high school's but Michigan still bludgeoned them to death and it was pretty funny to watch. The defense is scary and the offense is good enough. Improved QB play and redzone offense could turn them into title contenders not just in the Big Ten, but in the national picture as well.
bakonydraco 10
Bill3ffinMurray 10 Physically dominant against #6 Florida, the Wolverines showed that they are more than capable of moving past the tremendous losses they incurred during the offseason. By far one of the more impressive wins in Week 1. They'll face tougher tests later in the season, but this is the right start to the 2017-18 season for Jim Harbaugh. Just don't wear all maize again, please.

Nathanael-Greene 10 Despite the Florida team they faced having multiple players suspended, Michigan still beat a talented Gator football team with a good performance by their defense, so they will move into the Top 10 and round it out in my poll.
TanzaniaMagic 10 That offense was all sorts of inconsistent during the first half. Still, Michigan took care of business against a ranked Florida team and looked great defensively despite replacing most of their starters. (Or maybe Florida is just bad.)
TaylorLeprechaun 10 -1: This is a very good Michigan team.  The only issue I see is at the QB position.  If they can minimize Speight's mistakes they will be very well off.
theeguy 10 Maybe too high here, because Florida was missing half their team and still have yet to figure out this "offense" thing

beerslingerjay 11 In what really turned out to be an ugly game, Florida managed to look uglier. Was it a great Michigan defense or a worthless Florida offense? Only time will tell, but even with the lackluster performance of Michigan's offense, they were still able to handily win a big opener against a strong SEC team.
BorisNumber1 11
DavoinShower-handle 11
Extra_Excrement 11 Michigan lost a ton of players but I expect Harbaugh to coach his team well enough into possibly a top 10 finish. Speight needs to be more consistent if Michigan wants a shot at the B1G title or at defeating their rivals for the first time in years. You can't gift most teams 14 points and expect to comeback. It's a good thing that Florida's offense only scored three points on their own. Still, another win over Florida (the likely SEC East Champion) is an achievement.
Ghost_of_Dude 11 A good opening weekend win against a good team gives the Wolverines a bump above two teams (Auburn and Stanford) that won handily, but against vastly inferior opponents.

stripes361 12 Michigan rises slightly due to a stunning defensive performance against Florida. However, Wilton Speight struggled once again against a top-tier opponent. For Michigan to have a Top Ten season, they must get more production in the passing game.
