noahthearc 6 131.8 points -> NY6 Favorite. First year coach with a lot returning on defense and a lot of young talent to work with. Recruiting and transfers were solid, as well. Sooners should be well positioned to play for their conference title and a NY6 bowl.

nw____ 8 Definitely biased here but I think OU is about where they should be in the AP and Coaches' Polls. Venables seems to have immediately keyed in on a problem the fans have noticed for a few years now: OU has lost its physical edge and toughness. I would never say Riley was a bad coach but I do think OU hit its ceiling with him at the helm. To take that next step, OU will need to be tougher-- Alabama and Georgia certainly are. I think BV was the perfect hire but admit that it may take another couple of seasons for OU to be rolling again. If he can give the team its edge back? Look out. As for this season, I think the offensive will be at least as good as it was last season (which, honestly, for OU standards, wasn't amazing). If the defense takes even a few small steps forward (e.g., not missing tackles and/or getting absolutely cooked by any WR with talent), OU should be right in the thick of it for another Big XII championship.

owl_man 10 Can Venables win as the head man? Well, he'll have the talent and the support of one of the best blue bloods in the game. I think he'll have his work cut out for him. But watch for new QB Dillon Gabriel, if he plays like he did at UCF year one could surprise a lot of people.

SpadeRyker 11 OU similarly has a pretty high variance in where it can end up this season. Venables was an elite coordinator, but he'll need the team to mold into his scheme and playstyle quickly if OU is going to challenge for anything substantial this year. The talent is always there in Sooner country and he has one of the best offensive coordinators in the country at his side now, but we need to see how the team comes together following such a huge blindside and scramble to keep things together.

bretticus33 12 All eyes in Norman are turning to Brent Venables who replaces Lincoln Riley at the helm with Riley bolting for USC. Fans will be wondering if Oklahoma's normally underwhelming and underperforming defense improves under Venables, and will Dillon Gabriel continue the line of great QB play at Oklahoma? There's a lot of change at Oklahoma to deal with.
Casaiir 12
eclectic_tastes 12 Very much in wait and see mode for Venables, but the amount of talent still on the roster means Oklahoma deserves a high ranking.

woakley 16 Obviously a whole lot of question marks here, new coach, new QB, and a lot of movement in the program. Oklahoma has been a strong program in recent years, but so much still remains to be seen

mcguffinman 4 I REALLY like the Brett Venables hire. He waited so long at Clemson and finally took the opportunity he'd been waiting for, even with losing Williams and Rattler, let's not act like Oklahoma is going to be starved for talent.

dusklord1 7 I think the combination of a Brent Venables defense and a Jeff Lebby offense will propel back to the top of the Big12. Dillon Gabriel might not be Caleb Williams, but he doesn't need to be. Their two biggest competitors, OSU and Baylor, lose lots of production and/or coaches, and Texas is Texas. Although I doubt they're a playoff team (despite their schedule being more favorable to do so than #4-5), they will be a solid NY6 team. Like Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame, the Venables era could start out with some growing pains and an 8 win season, but their schedule is reasonably favorable. No top teams in OOC play and OSU and Baylor both come to Norman.

donald_flap 13 Oklahoma has a good deal of uncertainty with the upcoming year. Lincoln Riley was a very offensively minded HC and Brett Venables is quite literally the opposite. I think this will be a season of growing pains, but eventually they will figure it out.

RaceScottRace 21 This is one that will raise eyebrows, but I'm just not sold on OU in year one under Venables. I think he's THE guy. They absolutely made the right hire, and he's going to have a lot of success there. I just think year one will have a lot of growing pains because of the amount of turnover on the roster and among the coaches. They also don't have as a good of a quarterback as they've had in the past. I think on paper OU is like an 8 or 9 win team, but it wouldn't shock me to see them do a little better just because the conference schedule sets up very favorably for them this year.
