From their composite rankings, Penn State has overachieved. Their composite ranking puts them 19th overall making their jump one of the largest in the country.Penn St has slowly seen their recruiting class ranking rise over the past 4 years (21th, 20th, 19th, 13th) so if they can continue this, we might see them make the jump from great to elite. |

I think Penn State looks a lot better than it seems a lot of people do; they return some really good players and actually had a pretty decent 2018 campaign, so it's not as though they're coming out of nowhere. |

Overshadowed by Ohio State and Michigan in the Big Ten East. Losing so many key players may affect them, but some odd calls not-withstanding, James Franklin is a great coach and should have the Nittany Lions in good shape this year. |

Hunches: After a year of residual Moorhead, the offense takes a step back because Ricky Rahne might not be good at his job. Also, the defense keeps them in every game. |

Record: 10-2. Penn State goes 2-1 against their fellow B1G East powers, beating the Michigan schools and losing to OSU, but a road loss to Iowa stops a potential 3 way tie for 1st place in the B1G East. I had a hard time deciding who to rank #10 between Florida and PSU as it decides who gets the last at-large NY6 bid, but despite Penn State having the better win between the 2, Florida's 3 ranked wins to PSU's 1 makes me give the nod to them.Bowl Projection: Citrus Bowl |

Penn State was a consistent top 15 team a year ago that could beat all but the elites and if I remember correctly an inclement weather Michigan State team(which basically counts as elite) in the regular season a year ago. The Nittany Lions have to find their quarterback, and a consistent offensive spark with Trace McSorely gone, but James Franklin has recruited well. I don't think they'll be able to break through, but I think they will continue to be a very good team in a tough conference. |

I think Penn State is being underlooked a bit this year.  Defense is on the level of the two Michigan schools (inside the Big 10).  Offense will see some fresh faces but thats not necessarily a bad thing and the talent level as a whole has really rose the past few years.  I'd consider them a strong contender for the conference if they can beat the other juggernauts in the division. |

Penn State will field a nasty defense in 2019 and should be a tough match-up for any team they face. The offense won't be an anchor as sophomore QB Clifford has a huge arm that could stretch defenses and and keep running lanes open for their new running backs. Unfortunately, the schedule doesn't do the Nittany Lions any favor as they must travel to Ohio State, Michigan State, and Iowa. |

Penn State is another of my Tier 3 teams right now. They have a smooth first 5 games which should push them up the rankings, then they hit a double header of Iowa and Michigan. If they clear that hurdle, the will get a test from Michigan State, but the only true stumbling block is OSU at the end of the year.I am pretty confident that the defense can carry Penn State through most of the season, almost assuring 8-4 as the floor. My big question is QB. How do they adjust to losing McSorely in Happy Valley? A great showing by Clifford (I'm assuming he'll be QB1) could make them much more threatening for the Big 10. |

Penn State just couldn't beat good teams last year but they take care of business against the weaker teams but if they want to move up they need to be able to beat Top 25 foes. |

PSU will make a case for best defense in the B1G. How will the marriage of OC Ricky Rahne and new QB Sean Clifford work out? |
