2017 Preseason Penn State Nittany Lions Rankings

halldaylong 1 I made a super basic computer poll for the preseason because why the hell not. Its guess is as good as anyone else's and if you complain about it, I don't really care because it's the preseason..... It's calculated based off the previous season's win total, the bowl they reached, and how many returners they have coming back (bonus points for a returning QB).

WhiteBaseCoat 3 Here's a twist (both because I'm really high on them and because I still haven't ranked Alabama yet). Penn State may not fully match up from a talent standpoint to the other teams I've ranked 1-5, but they're extremely experienced, especially on their already-awesome offense. James Franklin is a good coach with a good staff, and I think if anybody is poised to make a plausible run at the title without being completely loaded with blue-chip talent, it's Penn State (though note I'm still not projecting that they'll win it all).

Rainbow_Beefcake 4 Trace McSorely. Notice a trend here. Teams with proven QB's are the haves in a world of have nots. All tolled, 16 starters will return to happy valley. These guys could certainly be playing for a lot come january.

relax_on_the_mat 5 They've got talent and they believe. Urban and tOSU are a little more of a "proven" product, but I really see these two programs being neck-and-neck with it coming down to another decisive head-to-head.

Arsenal7X 6 Dis offense gon be lit, yo. Joe Moorhead told me not to call Trace McSorely a jump ball merchant so I will downgrade that to the Christian Fuchs/Rory Delap category of "long throw connoisseur". But really though he's a very good quarterback and Saquon Barkley is the best RB in the country and Mike Gesicki might be the best TE in the country so yeah they're gonna be fun.
beerslingerjay 6 Best RB in CFB makes McSorley's job that much easier. I may hate James Franklin, but I'll be damned if he isn't doing good work.

Cobainism 6 PSU returns 9 starters on offense, heralded by the dynamic duo of QB Trace McSorley and future NFL Draft top 10 pick RB Saquon Barkley. Their OL has also improved a ton since the days of Temple's 2-man rush sack. In other words, OC Joe Morehead, who will likely leave for a P5 HC job after this season, has been a godsend for James Franklin. The defense also has plenty of returnees, but the loss of standout CB Jon Reid (knee injury) will hurt. Ultimately, the Nittany Lions should once again be a major competitor for the B1G title and a playoff berth. Watch out for that trap game at Northwestern on October 7th!

mickeyquicknumbers 6 Penn State yay! This is could very well be the best offense in the country in 2017, competing for that title with the team ranked directly behind them. Saquon Barkley, Mr. McSorley, and a deep slew of pass catchers are going to keep this offense as electric as it finished 2016, and with a general step forward at every position group on defense (except maybe edge rushers) I think this is the obvious team to challenge Ohio State in 2017.

Our-Gardian-Angel 7 A surprise Big Ten title and trip to Pasadena last year has expectations sky high for James Franklin and the Nittany Lions in 2017. Trace McSorley and Saquon Barkley might be the best QB-RB combo in all of college football. But can Penn State repeat as division champions in the grueling Big Ten East?
SpeedxKills 7
stripes361 7 Saquon Barkley was built to play in the Big 10. This power back should garner Heisman interest in 2017 as a strong defense gives Penn State the field position it needs to score tons of rushing touchdowns. How the Nittany Lions handle a brutal October, and how James Franklin handles his newfound job security, will be the difference between a Tier 1 Bowl and a CFP spot.

jmac_21 8 Penn State ended the season with a flury, they've got a really good returning QB, and a great coach. They have a lot of potential.

IAMAVelociraptorAMA 14 What??? Penn State at 14??? I don't think this year's Penn State repeats what happened last year.  I saw a lot of bad games (including that awful Minnesota game) and with the team remaining mainly the same, I expect exploitation from opposing coaches and a nuclear bomb drop from Ohio State and Urban Meyer.
