In spite of the milquetoast coaching reputation of Clay Helton, USC has a good chance of improving enormously this year. Max Brown is now in his fourth year in the program, and should not do much to set the offense back much. Ronald Jones, JuJu, and 2-6th receivers on the depth chart who all return this year should provide the Trojans with some truly electric playmaking. An offensive line that was hard to love last year should make large strides towards more efficient play, as 4/5ths of them return. The massive gutting of the front seven WILL hurt the Trojans this season, but the secondary is both extremely talented and very experienced (all five defensive backs with at least 25 tackles in 2015 return, which should help limit opposing offenses from marching all over this group, and giving what could be an incredible offense a chance to win. |

Might be a bit higher on USC than most. I really like Adoree' Jackson's game and I think their offensive line is among the best in the country. I doubt they can beat Alabama, so they will most likely get docked a few spots depending on how that plays out. |

So much talent. They might not end up this high at the end of the season, but that'll be more reflective of their schedule than their skill. |

A win over Alabama in week 1 would make the Trojans #1 overall in my book. I don't see that happening, though.  |

USC probably doesn't deserve to be here but I want the pleasure of dropping them out of my poll after the lose to Alabama.   |

The LA schools have been in a rut of perennial underachieving and so I'm a tad bit low on them. I don't really expect much to change under Helton aside from maybe a little bit of added stability. |

USC projects high in my poll because of raw talent. USC ranks #2 in the 2016 247sports talent composite, only behind Alabama. Many previously young, inexperienced players should just be coming into their own led by the '15 class (#1 by 247sports team composite) and '14 classes (#10 247sports team composite). Some may see this as an inflated homer pick with the program surrounded by questions of coaching instability and the nation's toughest schedule. But objectively USC has one of the most talented rosters in the nation and a preseason coaches poll rank of #17 suggests this isn't a drastic overvaluation. If my poll were a projection of the final rankings USC would be lower because of schedule, however it's not.  |

A new coaching staff is normally a sign of a hard season. I expect that to hold true this year, and I doubt they make the conference title game. However, it's USC. They are very talented. That said, it's a tough schedule ahead. Right now, given the changes, I have them right on the edge of top 20, but I am not even sure they maintain top 25 throughout the season. |

The Trojans are tired of the coaching controversy they've had in seasons past, Clay Helton could be the stability the program needs. USC boasts some of the most talented athletes in college with Adoree' Jackson and JuJu Smith-Schuster. First year QB Max Browne is ready to compete and will be relying on JuJu to help him get acclimated. The defense will need to fill some holes, but USC defenses always do. |

USC perhaps has finally found stability at the HC spot with newly minted Clay Helton, who has been a coach for Southern Cal since 2010. USC opens their season with Alabama, and faces Stanford shortly after in Week 3. They close the season with Oregon, @ Washington, @ UCLA, and Notre Dame. That would be a tough stretch for many teams. This could be a year of adjustments for Coach Helton, and not the return to glory the Trojan faithful are salivating for.  |

The opening game against Alabama looms large. They're definitely the underdogs and a win would be huge for USC. |

Very solid roster - this is USC and recruits want to go their.  But there's a new coach and new staff, a new QB, and they're going to lose 3-4 games most likely as they put everything together.  I think they're going to be a force in the last third of the season. |

NO idea if they will be good this year with a lame head-coaching hire, but a talent loaded roster means they will stay here as division champs until they get a good old slaughtering Week 1. |
