(-) Losses to Bama don't count. Seriously, that's the way the math works in this poll. A loss to #1 cannot influence your ranking (neither can a win over #130 or an FCS team). Also, the formula doesn't know about injuries. |

Lost and no more François so they might be screwed, but were basically even with Alabama except for special teams and two bad INTs. Turnovers in bad spots cost them the game, defense is offense, O-Line still isn't good enough to beat Alabama for the title, but might not maker for ACC victory. |

(-2) They lost 24-7 to Alabama. The previous team to lose to Alabama was Washington in the CFP, and the score was also 24-7. The Huskies finished #4 in the polls, so I feel like #5 is reasonable. Some folks might be ranking them lower based on their losing Francois, but I watched a team win the national championship with a 3rd-string quarterback (Ohio State), so I'm going to wait and see just how this affects them. It's not like FSU isn't enough of a blue blood that it might have some reserve talent. |

Francois goes down. I'll look to see how good or bad Blackman is over the next couple weeks before I adjust FSU's ranking too much (two big tests coming up in the next 3 weeks). But all told, this defense is still probably one of the 2-3 best in country, and the team as a whole was only outgained by 19 yards against Bama did a lot to confirm that this is an elite or near-elite team outside of the QB position |

With the loss of their stellar QB, the centerpiece of their offense, it is anyone's guess as to how FSU will perform the rest of the year. They still have some weapons on offense though, and a mean defense, but for the time being they are only the 2nd best team in the ACC. |

Taking on Bama Week 1 is no easy task for anyone, even if you're FSU. Much of the worries about O-Line strength came to fruition, but it's Bama, right? Nonetheless, it looks like they have a star-in-the-making with Akers and a stout, incredibly athletic defense. But we'll have to see how this team rebounds after losing Francois. |

The offense sputtered. The defense starred. The special teams lived up to its name. The 24-7 score is extremely misleading, as Bama wasn't able to do much offensively, a big credit to Florida State's defense. The Noles defense will have to remain strong throughout the year; the loss of Deondre Francois is going to hurt.  |

The offense could never get going and gave away the ball far too much, but their defense was absolutely impregnable at times.  Fatigue due to the lack offense and high pressure situations gradually wore them down though.   Originally this team was going to stay at #5, but the injury forced me to move them down due to doubts about the offense going forward. |

While they only lost to
the #1 team, they did it pretty badly. They also lost their star QB and aren't
looking great moving forward. |

Dropping FSU too much would be criminole (sorry). They lost to the best team in the country. I don't think dropping them too much is the right thing to do. Their defense is stout and at times their offense was rolling over Alabama. Akers looked solid. Unfortunately, their offense took a hit when Francois went down. With him out for the season, there are big question marks surrounding their offense. Luckily for Blackman most ACC defense won't give him as much trouble as Alabama. If FSU can fix their special teams I think they still have a solid shot. |

Lost decisively in multiple ways on Saturday.  Although losing to Alabama doesn't sink your playoff chances by a longshot, Francois tearing his patellar? Whole 'nother story.  Great defense though, Derwin James really showed his high first round status. |

-5: Played very well against Bama.  Unfortunately, the loss of Francois will probably be a BIG issue for this team.  They still have the talent to win most of their games, but the lack of experience at QB could hurt them in the long run. |

Amazing defensive play. Special teams... not so much. Lots of question marks with QB Deondre Francois now out for the year. Francois is one of the toughest players I ever had the pleasure of watching. I hope he comes back stronger and better. |

I think the only losing team I left in the rankings, which is a credit to them looking pretty good, making Alabama's offense look bad, and being brave enough to play in the first place. Also don't want to penalize them for losing Francois until we see how they look without him.  |

This is a heavy docking for a loss to the #1 team, but with Francois out for the season, there are major questions about the Seminoles going forward. They have a great defense and weapons on offense, but there may be some growing pains for the next in line moving forward.  |

FSU dropped from #4 to #10 this week after they lost their stud QB, Deondre Francois. They are still loaded but for now will take a back seat to all the teams with proven elite talents at the quarterback position. However, this is still a potential playoff team if James Blackman can play at a high level and lead his team to an ACC title. Don't sleep on the 'Noles. |

Probably my biggest mover of the season. Do I hate the Seminoles? Not enough to drop them 9 spots for no reason. Francois is hurt. Bad. A guy like that won't let a cart take him off the field unless he cannot walk. FSU's line got shredded all night. It was Bama, I know. Without the injury to Francois, I would have had the Noles at 6 or 7. They will see big tests from NC State and Miami, both of whom are looking to stake claims to the ACC. |

I know, I know...losing to the #1 team as the #3 team should not warrant a significant dropoff in a normal situation. The difference here is that this isn't a normal situation at all, with star QB and leader Deondre Francois out for the season due to a knee injury. Backup QB James Blackman might very well be the next Jameis Winston, but we don't know that at all right now. We'll all see his performance vs ULM next week, followed by a huge matchup vs. rival Miami the following Saturday. Blackman is athletic and has a strong arm, but there are questions regarding his mechanics, such as his footwork. His ectomorphic 6'5" 185 lbs frame is worrisome, especially with FSU's offensive line issues. Despite the myriad of talent on the roster, I'm not convinced that the Noles will be a serious playoff contender from hereonforth, hence the # 12 ranking. Jimbo is one of the best in the business, so I wouldn't be surprised if he proves me wrong |

Losing Francois is obviously an enormous hit for FSU's playoff hopes. Elite talent across the board will be limited by a rail-thin true freshman starter at QB. Sorry, FSU bros. |

Played decently well against Alabama, but lost their starting QB. Excellent defense, but the offense seemed to struggle against the Alabama defense, which I guess is to be expected. It will be up to their backup to save their season, which up until Saturday, looked like a playoff year.  |

Every Saturday night I write a provisional ballot in my notes then edit it the next morning. On Saturday night after the Alabama loss, I only dropped FSU to number 7, in front of Washington and USC, because I felt they showed enough in the game in Atlanta to still warrant a very high rating. There's no shame in losing to Alabama. And after all, it was only their special teams that looked particularly anything-other-than-good. Sunday morning rolled around and I learned that Francois would be out for the season. Horrible news for the Noles and, honestly, for college football as a whole. I couldn't keep them in the top 10 after losing one of their most important players, unfortunately. |
