Struggled against App State, but scaring P5 schools is App State's MO, so we can tentatively let it slide. |

B1G ADs please stop taking App State's calls. It's going to be bad and we all know it. I think this had trap game all over it and PSU still found a way to win. McSorely may look like Mark Tremonti from Creed but he's still really good. I normally would drop PSU for playing such a close game to inferior competition but 1. it's App State and 2. I think this team continues to evolve as the year goes on. I may eat my words on this one but we'll see.  |

Penn State needed another miraculous drive in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter to force overtime against Appalachian State, but Trace McSorely delivered once again; the offensive line looked like a weak spot and the receivers dropped a number of beautiful passes, but I think the defense suffered in large part because of the skill of Thomas and will perform better against all but the best quarterbacks. |

Dropped two spots due to needing OT to beat App St at home (though I think App St is among the better G5 teams). The next three weeks should be tune up games before hosting Ohio St & Michigan St |

Penn State eeked out a win Saturday against a good App State after a missed Mountaineer field goal sailed wide right to send the game into OT. However, the rushing attack was productive in the first game without Saqoun Barkely, with 204 yards and 4 touchdowns (RB Miles Sanders and QB Trace McSorley each had 2 scores). The defense, after allowing 28 points in the fourth quarter, came up big with an interception to seal the win. The Nittany Lions should still make noise in the B1G East and the playoff talk. An early 'Whiteout" game against Ohio State might decide the East. |

After ranking Penn State #4 in my preseason poll, I am dropping them back down near the consensus point. Their new secondary has me very concerned for them. Still sticking strong with my prediction that Miles Sanders will do a stellar job of replacing Saquon Barkley's production and that the offense will be quite powerful. I am just not sold on this retooling defense right now. |

I simply cannot give Penn State the credit they likely want for just barely beating App St...in overtime...after shooting themselves in the foot constantly. They almost got Michigan'ed. They still won, and they control their own destiny in the B1G...but damn dude. Clean that shit up. |

They did pull out a win, but not before nearly dropping a home opener to the kings of upsets, Appalachian State. I really want to believe that Penn State is extremely good and that App State is just very very good this year as well, but we will have to see in the weeks coming. |

Penn State survied a big scare from App State in week 1. They didn't lose, so no reason for major alarm yet. But taking OT to beat App state is enough to make them drop a couple for me.  |

Nearly losing to that team gives slight PTSD as a Michigan fan, however it obviously could have been much worse (see Michigan 2007). PSU doesn't particularly look great, but it's tough to tell with the scare of an always good App State who play to their opponents. |

Kind of a big drop for Penn State here, just feel like they didn't look like people expected them to look. Really got away with one early, but they can make their way back into the competition as the season goes on.  |

Yeah not a very good game at all. App St is a good team, but going to OT with them isn't the best sign. Less impressive than the USC win, but its still a win, so they can stay above miami and michigan for now. But they got Pitt and Ohio St in the next 4 weeks, so we should find out fast if they are good or not. |

Full disclosure, I was not able to watch a single second of PSU's game against Appalachian State. My computer ratings still think they'll end up being a top 10-12 team, and App State's weird offense is tough for a lot of teams to defend, especially in an opener. A bit of a drop is needed though, I think. |

Speaking of bad looks, how about needing an interception in overtime to avoid Michigan counter-memes about losing to App State? The pieces are available for Penn State, they just need to actually assemble them into a football team. |
