I'm a believer that the champion from last year should take top spot until beaten.  If it means some egg on my face from a week-one loss, at least they were given a fair shake. |

Clemson is losing a lot of guys from their amazing run last season, but I have no doubts that Dabo can have them right back in the hunt this season. |

I wanted to put clemson at #1. I really did. But I think they lost more than their quarterback when Deshaun Watson declared for the draft. They lost their leader. Sure, most teams can replace a leader, especially teams that recruit as well as clemson, but I think Watson was more than your typical leader. That guy was beyond special. Impossible to replace and hard to make up for. |

Clemson may be underranked at #6 but their new QB will have to prove it. The Tigers have as much talent as anyone in the country but the five teams in front of them in my rankings all have bona fide stars taking the snaps on offense. Either Kelly Bryant or one of their young prospects will have to excel for Clemson to repeat as national champs...especially with a daunting trip to Louisville looming on September 16. |

Clemsons pretty solid, going 9-3 in the regular season. They struggle early before turning it on late. Losing OOC to Auburn, in conference @Louisville, and then falling in the trap game @NC State the week before what they thought was a season defining matchup vs FSU. Surprisingly they rebound and pull out a surprise against FSU. They end up representing the ACC in the Orange Bowl due to FSU heading to the playoffs where they fall to Michigan. |

1st of two teams with coaches that demand a top-ten ranking, even without the returning production to put them in the top-5. #12 in 5-year recruiting average, and great coordinators. |

They don't have Deshaun Watson but the do have Deon Cain, Dexter Lawrence, Christian Wilkins, Clelin Farrell, and a whole host of other weapons as well. If they can find a decent quarterback this is another playoff calibre team. Dabo dun did good. |

The amount of star talent leaving Death Valley, including the the program's GOAT in Deshaun Watson, led me to rank the defending national champions this "low". That being said, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Dabo's squad ends up playing in a NY6 bowl. |

I think Clemson takes several steps back because they are losing sooo many components of their offense. I definitely see them playing second fiddle to FSU until proven otherwise. |

Clemson is losing a lot from its national championship-winning teams, but the Tigers still should be a force in the ACC. Quarterback Kelly Bryant has huge shoes to fill. If he can step up, Clemson can still compete with Florida State for Atlantic Conference supremacy. |

A lot of turnover from the National Championship team, but a solid big men on both sides of the line will make the transition a lot easier for new faces at the skill positions. |

The Tigers lost football Jesus, along with a lot of other production. They aren't recruiting at the level of Alabama, Ohio State, or their in-conference rival, Florida State.  |

And here we have returning national champ Clemson, knocked out of the top 10 because I sprung Louisville and Stanford above them like a madman. This is gonna be controversial too, but they lose a lot more than just Deshaun Watson on offense. They're easily the most inexperienced team on the list thus far, and while Dabo has done an amazing job running this program, they're not at Bama levels of reloading yet. |

HO-boy
clemson has some work to do this year. I don't know of another team with such
a total offensive turnover to deal with. Starting with generational-QB
Dehsaun Watson, 3 of his top-4 targets, and the starting running back. The
offensive line should still be great, and the WR depth is undeniable; but
this offense will not be the one Clemson fans have accustomed themselves to
the last 2 years. The defense, while maintaining a much closer form to 2016
than the offense, also has some questions to answer with 4 of the 7 elite
starters on last year's team headed to the NFL (Boulware, Johnson,
Tankersley, Watkins). I expect the defense to stay in the top-10, but with
trips to Louisville & Virginia Tech, NC State as well as Auburn & FSU
at home, I think the offensive reset will knock them down to a 9-3 type
season.  |

I know that losing a first round talent at WR is no big deal for y'all, but losing your GOAT QB should hurt. Also, you lost another four players to the draft. Y'all will still be damn good and I wouldn't be surprised if you proved me completely wrong and went to the playoffs again, but I think a slight (read: slight and only temporary) regression from losing Watson is bound to happen. |
