I had them #4 last week, you can read my reasoning in last week's ballot. They looked bad against Utah State, but it's hard for me to drop them too much. Starting to doubt they are as good as I thought they were, but not going to move them way down on a one-game sample size if that one game was a win. |

Michigan St would have dropped down due to a close win to Utah St, however the two teams directly in front of them for me both lost outright (Miami, Washington) so they ended up +1 (had ND leap them). Think they're better than a 7 point home win to Utah St. We'll see next week with a trip to Arizona St.  |

Michigan State had a close Friday night opener against the Utah State Aggies, as is tradition. Spartan faithful should be used to these games by now, as they tend to open the season in very vanilla fashion.  |

Like Penn State, Michigan State looked unimpressive against a team they probably should've blown out--but to be fair they did at the beginning of last season to and they went on to win double digit games. Not going to overreact here. |

Looked awful against Utah State, should have lost that game and I'm tempted to move them down, except the next year also looked bad. |

The only reason Michigan State is above Penn State is that they won in regulation, and by a touchdown. |

Michigan State is helped by the teams below them losing; needing a late score to overcome a lesser opponent is never a good sign, but that's especially true when your opponent went 6-7 last season. |

Playing down is Michigan State's signature move.  Some teams passed them, others ahead fell, keeping them flat for now. |

Michigan State won a game that was a lot closer than many Spartan fans think it should have been. The defense could have been better, with Utah State converting on over half of their 3rd downs and passing for over 300 yards. However, the defense stifled the run game, but allowed 2 rushing TDs. QB Brian Lewerke played well, although he threw a pick six. Michigan State fans should be grateful for Connor Heyard, as he scored 2 TDs that allowed MSU to survive the scare against the Aggies. Expect MSU to still make noise in the B1G East, as they host Michigan and Ohio State. |

Was this MSU's tradition of nearly shitting the bed early or are they bad again? Which option is correct? See what I did there? I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt here and I hope they're not bad again. |

Back to back Big 10 teams that are lucky to be undefeated. Michigan State hung on against Utah State with a week one scare that seems to be tradition for Sparty now. They drop 1 spot because of that, but again I wont panic until I see more.  |

Barely getting by a cupcake and not looking particularly great doing it. Some bias here, but MSU do not look like a Top 15 team yet but they have the potential to be with Lewerke. |

Watching the USU-Michigan State game, I noticed something -- USU was able to keep up with Michigan State's players athletically. That doesn't bode well for the Spartans, but I have faith in Mark Dantonio to correct things and keep the Spartans in at least fringe Big Ten East contention. |

MSU sneaks in with a surprising struggle against Utah State. Perhaps they are far more than I would expect from them, and Michigan State will prove its worth, but for now, they are scraping by. |
