Yes, Tennessee did not look great against Appalachian State. Yes, there are questions about the team in general. But, for now, a win's a win and losses by top five teams absolutely help them maintain their top-ten position. It's a situation similar to Michigan: there's just not enough information yet. |

As much as I wish my undergrad would have won so I could rank them, and as much as I wish I'd punish the Vols for their play, I'm not really demoting them because a win is a win. |

Yeah, an App State team might have taken them to OT. But I'm not dropping them for beating a somewhat decent team. If App State beats Miami and Tennessee beats Virginia Tech, I have no problem leaving them in this position.  |

On the other hand, Tennessee was dominated at times by App State - they won on a miracle play that was probably called wrong on the field. I'm disappointed, but this is just evidence that we should all take a step back before crowning them CFB-elect. |

I'm not punishing too much for cutting it close, first week is given to work out kinks, just the teams ahead of them straight up looked better. Could be hugely talented, could be hugely over-hyped, honestly still have no clue, this is basically a placeholder ranking until they prove something one way or the other. On thin ice next week.  |

I'll probably be viewed as a homer, but I don't think Tennessee should fall that much. I honestly initially questioned whether they should fall from the top ten at all, given how many other teams lost. However, upon reflection, I see a lot of other teams that performed very well, and Tennessee quite frankly did not. I put them behind MSU, which did really wow me, and ahead of TCU that struggled far too much against an FCS team. I think the App State team the Vols faced was very underrated, but it's hard to tell much from one game. Right now I leave the Vols at 13, expecting them to climb back up but knowing that they cannot if they do not improve offensively. |

Underperformed while they were probably overrated.  They could have a great season by staying tough like they did on Thursday night.  That was resolve we haven't seen from a Butch Jones squad yet. |

The entire #17-#19 rankings had me thinking for a while. I really punished Tennessee here, as the only reason they really won was because the Appalachian State coach went full Andy Reid..., but I thought pushing them to #19 was a bit drastic. However I felt Ole Miss's play was much better in their loss. OK State is the odd man out, which I feel uncomfortable with...but whatever.  |

Is it possible for a team to win a game at home against a Sun Belt team and look worse than Tennessee did? If that was an anomaly they'll shoot back up, but if not they're going to have a really hard time starting against VT. |

Quite honestly, that was one of the most ugliest victories I've seen. App St played terribly: awful play calling and clock management down the stretch and Tennessee hardly pulled it off. Only strengthens my skepticism. They have a lot of room for improvement and can for sure make a good run. There's soooooooo much time left. |

I debated not even ranking the Volunteers at all after needing luck to pull off the win over a Sunbelt team in OT.  Maybe I shouldn't have as it goes against the grain of most of my rankings. But App State is a good team and Tennessee did get the W. However any team that could possibly be considered top 15 should wipe the floor with a Sunbelt team. |

Tennessee managed to win this game because App State's kicker could not make FGs. Frankly speaking, Tennessee had one of the worst performances of the weekend. Star QB Josh Dobbs had a bad night and went 16/29, 192 yards, 6.6 AVG, 1 TD, 1 INT and a QBR of 26.3. Luckily for the Vols, aside from Georgia the SEC East looked bad as a whole. That being said, if Tennessee doesn't get their act together soon it might be a long season for them. |

They beat AppSt, but the way they did it causes them to drop a lot. While they are a really good G5 team, beating a really good G5 team in OT after relying on fluke after fluke to get there does not warrant any better position than what I am giving them. |
