I wanted to rank the gators lower, I really did. I tried. I didn't want to be a homer. But then I thought, who would win between Louisville and the gators? I said Chomp Chomp. Gators v. Stanford? Guess what? I'm going gators. Bruins? I'm still taking Gators. Michigan? I have us winning that game, I mean, idk, but I have us as slight favorites and so does vegas. LSU? They're scared of us anyway ;). In all seriousness, I think the gators are, as they have been for the last 5 years, a quarterback away. The defense will somehow be amazing again this year. And I will somehow feel as though the defense is underrated, again this year. If Franks or Zaire can prove to be the guy, the Gators can be as good as anybody. Without the guy? Eleventh.  |

Metric ton of talent, but can they offense? Players suspended for an indefinite period of time also muddy the waters. |

How will Florida manage to stumble into the SEC championship game this year? Tune in and find out as Jimmy Mac, the shark attack, goes for another trip to the house that Dr. Pepper built. |

Once again, the Gators are talented enough to win the weak SEC East. But with graduate transfer QB Malik Zaire at the helm, a loss of elite defensive talent to the NFL, and the recent suspension of top receiver Antonio Calloway for the Michigan game, will Jim McElwain's squad take the next step and play in a NY6 bowl? |

Jim McElwain is a true star in the coaching profession. The man who brought us Mark Ingram, AJ McCarron, Trent Richardson, and Greg McElroy is building a real contender in Gainesville. If this were the 2018 rankings, I would likely have Florida much higher. But it's not. |

Same deal with Florida. Their defense has less experience than Auburn and less talent than Auburn or LSU, but it should still be very good, while their offense returns a bunch... except for any established QB. And it's starting to seem like they could also lose Callaway at some point. McElwain had a very good run at CSU and has done quite well in stopping post-Muschamp Florida from collapsing, so it's hard not to expect him to improve upon last year, but his team has quite a few questions to answer. |

That defense got plundered.  Of their 8 draft selections, 7 were on defense, and 5 were in the first 3 rounds, all defense.  They bookend a tough SEC slog with expected losses at Michigan and Florida State - an early loss, a late loss, and at least one or two SEC losses is going to spell a rough time for a hyped Florida team that will likely punch below their talent just by virtue of their brutal schedule. If they come out swinging and manage to upset Michigan, however, expect this ranking to skyrocket. |

McElwain may be a weird guy, but he could see himself atop the SEC East very easily this season. They open the season against a tough Michigan team. |

Jim McElwain has guided the Gators to a 19-8 record and back-to-back SEC East titles during his first two years. But Florida still is searching for answers to the offensive problems that have plagued them since the heyday of Urban Meyer and Tim Tebow. |

Same old Gators. If they can find an offense, which might be a little bit easier this year with Malik Zaire, they'll be a force. Until then, 19 feels right. |

Oh god I am worried about playing a Muschamp defense with a damn good QB on the offense. Thankfully we host them but this is a team that I've seen people hyping, and rightfully so.  |

Last
year I predicted Florida's offense would rise to the level of competent and
the defense would take a step back from "elite" to "very
good" and two should mostly offset each other. It turns out I was a year
early on that prediction - as the offense was still very bad, and the defense
didn't miss a step with Hargreaves, Neal, Bullard and Morrison gone. This
year, the offense returns 9 starters and should see improvement from every
single position group, while the defense loses 8 starters and may have too
many issues with depth to maintain top-5 status. A 10-15th quality defense
and an offense that moves from the 90's to the 50's seems reasonable, but
that largely depends on competent QB play, something that has felt up in the
air at UF since Tebow graduated. |
