SCar has been slowly yet surely improving the last couple of years. They'll definitely be the underdog against UGA in their second game of the season but if they win they could end up in the SECCG. Keep in mind this team was younger and without Deebo last year and they still played #1 Georgia insanely closely in Athens. Game 2 in Columbia with a reloading defense is a Bulldog nightmare. One of these seasons SCar will take down Clemson; it probably won't be this year but soon. |

Like Oregon, I see South Carolina as a darkhorse and surprise team. Muschamp has bounced back quite nicely from his tumultuous Florida tenure and has a solid program to work with in Columbia. I can easily see this team pulling off a huge upset Week 2 as Georgia comes to town.  |

I was not a big Will Muschamp fan when he went to Florida. His offense was totally hapless and the job looked way, way too big for him. While Kirby Smart is equally explosive on the sidelines, he had a much better sense of discipline in his first year as a head coach. I think Muschamp's time at Auburn going back to DC was beneficial for him, as are the lowered expectations at South Carolina. With Tennessee and Florida both rebuilding (for the 2nd time in recent memory), South Carolina seems poised for the kind of 9- or 10-win season that Spurrier delivered before abruptly departing. They return a lot of offensive production as well. I still think that's more a factor of the competition in the East than their talent level, which is why they're down among the end of the rankings. A week 2 matchup against UGA and a week 14 matchup against Clemson will tell us a lot about exactly where Muschamp has this program. |

They have to replace a lot of talent on defense, but don't be surprised if this team makes a run. The offense brings back pretty much everyone, and that could carry them while the defense finds its identity. |

Did you know Cocks QB Jake Bentley should only be a freshman in high school? The young guy will have help on offense with Cocks teammate Deebo Samuel returning from injury. Rico Dowdle and A.J. Turner will form the Cocks' RB duo. Both Dowdle and Turner are guys, but I'm hesitant to call either a Dude quite yet. Donnell Stanley will lead a Cocks offensive line that will play anywhere from poorly to quite well. On the other side of the ball, Muschamp has the Cocks playing (insert any of the following adjectives: aggressive, gritty, gutsy, passionate, staunch, tough) defense that will give even the best teams on the Cocks' schedule trouble. Cocks DE D.J. Wonnum is quietly returning from a 13 TFL season while Cocks CB Rashad Fenton hopes to prove that he really is one of the best corners in the SEC. My Cocks record prediction: 9-3. I don't think they upset either Georgia or Clemson, and I have Jimbo leading A&M to a hard-fought victory, but don't count the Cocks out in any of those games. |

I think south Carolina overperformed their actual team quality a bit last year; which if I'm being optimistic is the first time Muschamp can probably say that so that's a nice breakthrough.  An offense that was frankly pretty bad last year returns just about every key player and also get's back Deebo Samuels and maybe most importantly now has an OC that isn't Kurt flippin' Roper. I expect big leaps into "decency" on offense, and a defense that was probably just outside of the T25 in quality last year to be comfortably within it in 2018. It seems like there is an opportunity for at least 1 SEC East team to fall upward into a 9-4 type season, and while I was briefly tempted to put UF in, South Carolina has the more convincing collection of arguments so here they are. |
