mickeyquicknumbers 10 Call me part of the hype train if you want. But Joe Morehead's similar philosophied offense looks like be a great shape to move forward with the team that Dan Mullen built. Nick Fitzgerald is deeply flawed but experienced enough to make some strides into competent passing under Morehead's schemes, which was undoubtedly their biggest issue last year. Defensively Schoop and Grantham are in the same tier of DC's and this defense which was quite good last year returns all but 3 members of its 2-deep which means big things to come for this season. A 9-3 type season with a difficult schedule feels just right for this squad.

TheJeemTeam 14 Mississippi State comes out on top of this 5-team tier. The decision came down to Miss. St. and USC. I went with Miss. St. due to being more experienced and having a more set situation at QB.

boxman151515 15 I'd rank Mississippi State higher were it not for a coaching change, which can be an adjustment even for the most talented teams. And make no mistake, this is a talented team that will run all over you and whose d-line will destroy your o-line.

mjacksongt 15 Joe Moorhead is going to do well, and he's got the biggest piece in place to ensure a smooth transition - Nick Fitzgerald at QB is a steadying presence that will pull them forward, but is Shoop the guy to bring the defense up to NY6 level?

Extra_Excrement 17 Usually I will not give a solid rank to a team with a HC change (FSU, TA&MU, etc.) yet Mississippi State returns so many starters, many of which were instrumental to their previous season, I can't ignore them. I can't say that MSU was better off with Mullen than Moorhead (b/c Moorhead just doesn't have the sample size yet) but even if Moorhead is insanely good it generally takes at least a season or two for a new HC to become adjusted. The expectations might be too high on Miss St this season but y'know what? I'm contributing to the hype problem too.

GenialGiant 18 While getting a new head coach can be daunting for a program, Mississippi State looks like it will hit the ground running with former Penn State OC Joe Moorhead.

woakley 18 So much of this team will rest on the health of Nick Fitzgerald and his ability to carry the team. I'm ranking them here assuming that 1. Nick Fitzgerald will be healthy and will stay healthy and 2. Joe Moorehead can sustain the momentum that the program had going into the end of last year. I could be terribly terribly wrong, but hey then you can make fun of me so it all works out.

Blooblod 19 The underdogs for the title of best defensive line in the country (not including Clemson) are down in Starkville. Jeffery Simmons might just be the best DT in the country (not including Ed Oliver) while Montez Sweat quietly led the SEC in TFLs for last season. The rest of the defense isn't quite as potent, but should still be good. CB Jamal Peters hasn't lived up to his potential yet, but this could be the year he puts it all together. On offense, new head coach Joe Moorhead has some nice pieces to work with. Elgton Jenkins leads a reliable offensive line that should keep Nick Fitzgerald upright most of the time. And, while the WR corps is a huge question mark, RB Aeris Williams crossed the 1,000 rushing yard threshold last season. My Bulldogs record prediction: 9-3. I think Mississippi State will be fall to both Alabama and Auburn, and for the second year in a row LSU will get a much-needed win from an opponent that has a nuclear meltdown in the 4th quarter.

HUSKEROYAL 19 Mullen might be gone, but Moorhead is a solid replacement. QB Fitzgerald should once again lead the Clangas to a successful season despite a somewhat difficult schedule.

PHubbs 19 Mississippi State returns over 80% production on both sides of the ball, including one of the best weapons in the country with Nick Fitzgerald at QB. MSU faces the same problems as their fellow acronym brothers from the north that they have created a winning culture but play in a division with 3 yearly top 15 recruiters. Just like Stanford above them, MSU will ride on their Heisman hopeful candidate to carry them as far as he can. We'll see if Fitzgerald is up to the challenge.

goblue10 20 If Moorhead can get the offense to click in his system they could get real good real fast. All the pieces are there.
JeromesNiece 20 Nick Fitzgerald will be great but I have a hard time seeing them make it very far in the SEC West with a new system under Joe Moorehead. They will be a very solid team but they will definitely lose to Bama and a couple other SEC teams.

52hoova 22 Good team last year, but they're losing a fantastic coach and also their star quarterback was last seen with his foot dangling off his leg like like a bandanna-bindle hanging off the end of a hobo's stick.

chrisb19 24 Miss State lost one of my favorite head coaches when UF made the very obvious decision to poach Dan Mullen. Joe Moorhead is taking over his first HC gig at a school with VERY fixed ceilings, but he also inherits one of the strongest dual-threat QBs in the SEC. Once you get past Bama and Auburn the SEC West gets muddled in a hurry. There's a chance that the Bulldogs pull off an 8-win season, or they could finish below .500. This slot could really go to Miss St, Ole Miss, or A&M. There are a lot of known unknowns right now in the SEC West.
