"Grier to Sills" will hopefully overshadow "so who's gonna play defense" |

Originally my pick for #1 BIG12 team, WVU likely has the most hyped up offense of the 2018 season. Will Grier is certainly really good but relying strictly on offense will not get them too far. WVU's defense wasn't very good in 2017 and I see that they're only returning maybe 5 players from that unit. If WVU wants a BIG12CG appearance they'll need a better defense. |

We get a chance this year to see how good Will Grier is. He has an amazing WR core.  |

Oklahoma's biggest challenger for the Big XII title will not come from the state of the Texas. Instead West Virginia and even more so Will Grier's arm will be the main hurdle for Oklahoma to overcome. Just like last year, this squad comes into the season with loads of offensive potential, but questions about depth and production on the defensive side of the ball. I don't expect WVU to drop more than 1 if any games heading into their last week showdown with OU. They just have to be prepared to take on the Sooners 2 times in two weeks if they want to go beyond a good 10+ win season and start talking playoff potential. |

A lot of people are high on the Mountaineers but I will never fully trust an offense that got defeated by an especially stiff breeze in Morgantown a few years ago. Yes, they return Will Grier. But I think a lot of the hype is just people casting about for a third team to like in the Big XII given the uncertainty surrounding a lot of programs in that conference. Oklahoma remains the clear number 1, TCU is a solid second choice, and then it gets really muddled really quickly. Will Texas make the jump? Can Oklahoma State rebuild quickly enough? Maybe this is the year that the Mountaineers put it all together but for me they still have a ceiling around 8-9 wins. |

It was tempting to put the Mountaineers a lot higher than this due to their sexy, sexy passing offense powered by Will Grier and what is arguably the best receiving corps in the country. Look for left tackle Yodny Cajuste to become a household name this season. When it comes to defense I'm probably not as low on WVU are you are, dear reader, but it could still be a major source of headaches for the Mountaineers. The defense does have one verified Mega-Dude in Butkus candidate David Long. My Mountaineers record prediction: 8-4. The highlight here is WVU's season finale win over 11-0 Oklahoma in Morgantown. |

Will Grier is among the best quarterbacks in college football and should lead West Virginia to a solid season in 2018. His absence at the end of last season showed, as the Mountaineers dropped the last three games last season. This team should contend for the Big 12 Championship this season if things go right. |

As of right now I'm not predicting a single Big 12 team to be better than 9-3 this year; but that also means I think there will be a cluster of teams at the top with 8-4/9-3 type seasons. West Virginia last year had a fun offense and a horrific defense, but I think that both will creep up enough this year (with maybe the best WR/QB combo in the nation) to ease them into the 8-4 quality range. |
