This might actually be my most contentious rating.  They return the #14 defense and #3 offense, and aside from an egg laid at Houston their losses were not so bad and their wins were really impressive.  It remains to be seen if Petrino can shape this team into a contender. |

I know, I know, I know, this seems super ridiculously high. I just think people are writing Louisville off way too quickly. I see three factors that work really well in their favor: Lamar Jackson, obviously, but also a really experienced defense, and Bobby Petrino himself. You can say a lot about the man, but he has a relatively consistent track record of building upon success, and when I look at those other two factors I have a feeling he's about to put together a really strong season that people aren't expecting. |

This may be out there, but Louisville returns talent and won't have as much pressure on them as last year. With an offseason to rest, they should return with a hot start. |

A beat up Louisville offense struggled down the stretch in 2016. However, the rejuvenated Cardinals will excel on both sides of the ball in 2017 and turn the ACC Atlantic division into a true three-team race. Louisville nearly went undefeated in conference play last year and get Clemson at home in September. The ACC may have a new sheriff this time next month. |

I feel pretty confident in Lamar Jackson, if Bobby Petrino wants to say he's not a bad coach, he'll get this team into a position to not drop three games after mid-October.  |

Last
year Louisville was ranked in the top-10 nationally for 9 straight weeks,
until a late collapse with 3 straight losses against Houston, Kentucky, and
LSU saw them plummet to #21. I think that final ranking had a lot of negative
momentum, and Louisville's season, judged on the whole, was much better than
a #21 ranked team. Jackson's top-3 receiving targets are all gone, as is
talented RB Brandon Radcliff; but none of them were good enough that I think
of this offense regressing with them gone. Bobby Petrino is an excellent
coach, and with Lamar Jackson around I still expect this to be one of the
10-15 best offenses in the nation. Their defense might be even better, with
Stacey Thomas, Jaire Alexander, and Chucky Williams leading one of the best
secondaries in the ACC.  |

I don't feel very good about putting them at 12, but I don't trust any of the teams below them either. Killer defense + Lamar Jackson is good enough for me. |

Last year was Lamar Jackson's team, and this year is no different. Louisville will go as far as he can carry them, and that's pretty far provided he doesn't run into a team with Ed Oliver again. |

Returning a Heisman winner is always a really good thing. Jackson didn't finish the season like he wanted to, so I'm ready to see his revenge tour. |

Louisville is a tricky team to rank. Lamar Jackson is an absolute monster of an offensive machine, but the end of last season proved that the team faces lack of depth. The starters are more than capable of beating anybody in their past (people seem to forget that they were mere yards from beating eventual national champions Clemson last year...in Death Valley no less.) However, depth could prove problematic again going forward.  |

Lamar Jackson may be the most unheralded returning Heisman winner in recent memory. With him under center, the Cardinals will once again have a potent offense. However, the issues that plagued them last year may remain in 2017. |

When Lamar Jackson is on Louisville can beat anybody. But when he's down he seems to lose confidence.Need more consistency from this team to know what they really are. |

Here's a fun fact: Jackson's completion % (56.2) was closer to Trevor Knight's (53.3) than it was to the Kenny Hill's (61.1). Seriously though, returning a reigning Heisman winner almost guarantees a good to great season. Especially when it's coached by a real piece of shit but brilliant offensive mind. |
