Overall Rationale: Sometimes when the Aggies lose, I enter a deep meditative state where the football gods begin to explain to me how the teams shake out. Unfortunately the football gods really hate the Aggies so I get this frequently.

1 Texas Longhorns Oddly poor showing that I’ll just chalk up to hangover from Ohio State and not taking the roadrunners seriously. Now they’re going to have to start defending this spot week in and week out. Tennessee should be able to test texas’ defense.
2 Ohio State Buckeyes Dominant win as expected. They have a tough schedule with only a few unranked opponents, probably one of the toughest in the B1G. Illinois should be a good tune up for B1G action.
3 Ole Miss Rebels Huge, emotionally charged win over LSU. Probably an overreaction to have them this high, but at the same time, who’s had a better win besides texas? They’ve beaten two top 25 teams already. Trinidad Chambliss looks like he hasn’t taken any steps back and he’ll be a major part of this team succeeding just like last season. Injury to Lacy is worrying but from what I’ve seen it doesn’t look too severe. Tough schedule ahead but this squad is one of the few that’s had any real battle testing.
4 Miami Hurricanes Closer than I expected. I have WF around the mid 40s in my rankings so not a bad squad. Both sides of the ball look like they could tune up some more, luckily for them CMU, Clemson, and FSU should all be non competitive. FSU only could be if they fire Norvell and the team gets the elusive coach switch boost.
5 Georgia Bulldogs I was a bit surprised it was only 21-3 at the half, but Georgia did what they needed to do vs the Piggies. A floundering OU offense next week should make for an easy win, but the margin is gonna tell me how much to buy this Offense that really hasn’t been tested yet.
6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish One of the bigger games on their schedule, which really should be an indictment of their schedule this year. Good defensive showing from the Fighting Irish. Next few games continue to look to be tune ups before facing off with BYU in a month.
7 Indiana Hoosiers WKU doesn’t say much, but it is a reference vs Georgia. This Indiana squad looks to have a solid defense as much as I can tell given the quality of opponents they’ve faced so far. Offense seems to be a bit weaker than I’d like to see from a top 10 team. Lucky for them, they have a pretty easy schedule by P2 standards.
8 Texas Tech Red Raiders Huge win over Houston. This squad definitely isn’t going to be as dominant as last year, and will face real challenges in a Big XII that looks more competitive this year than last year. It’s hard to gauge their calendar outlook at this point, but Baylor, SHSU, and Colorado may be their only “easy” games left.
9 Utah Utes This is more reflective of Georgia’s performance vs Arkansas in comparison to the Utes last week. That is far from a great way to do this but we’re still super early. Utah’s favorable first half of the season schedule will continue for a few more games before they start getting really tested.
10 Alabama Crimson Tide First half Alabama looked flawed once again this week, but Russell managed to keep the Tide from going out to sea. Still only a 14 point win at home with a +3 turnover margin doesn’t look good. FSU is a talented but very flawed and inconsistent team, which Alabama needs to do a better job of taking advantage of if they want to keep this spot. Still Russell is young and looks to be developing well already. Georgia looms large in a few weeks, but Alabama needs to be careful not to trip on Mississippi State or South Carolina before then.
11 BYU Cougars BYU looks fine and I debated having them above Alabama, but as the season progresses I expect they’ll swap around semi frequently. The other Big XII schools just have a bit more impressive of a resume at this point is the main thing against them.
12 Virginia Tech Hokies Around here is probably where my rankings get a little wonky, but I value the Hokies’ win over Maryland and ODU more than USC’s bad win over Rutgers and some suspect G6 California schools. The defense that I had been impressed by for USC early on has seemingly collapsed. Power conference win, even against Maryland is a big resume boost at this point. They should have an easy time vs BC coming up and then their first real test vs Pitt.
13 USC Trojans Where did the defense that held Fresno State scoreless go? They didn’t come to Rutgers. Rutgers lost to UMass and BC. Traveling all the way from LA to NJ is rough, but only a 7 point win over one of the worst squads in the country is BAD. They need to lock in for big games against flawed Oregon and Washington squads.
14 LSU Tigers Lane Kiffin’s LSU is a confusing squad. Dominated a bad Clemson, which looks less impressive as time goes on. Rough first half vs Louisiana Tech, which isn’t terrible just not great. And then a close loss to Ole Miss. The Tigers are still an upper tier team as far as I can tell, but they seem all over the place possession to possession. Luckily they face A&M at home and the Ags just got clocked by UK after needing a spectacular collapse from ASU the week before. A&M, McNeese, and UK should give them a good bounce back period to get right after the high school ish drama of the last week.
15 Penn State Nittany Lions The Nittany Lions haven’t played no one PAWL. I really have a hard time gauging this team and I’ve not been enticed to watch them so I really don’t know where they are so this is still largely based off my preseason expectations of them plus a cushiony soft start to their schedule. Wisconsin and Northwestern should be pushovers as well so we may not really get a good read on this squad until they host USC.
16 Florida Gators Big win over Auburn helps define their season, but the defense continues to be quite worrying for the Gators. How they perform vs Ole Miss when they host next week will say a lot, but I expect the gators are about to get torched by Trinidad Chambliss and co.
17 Cincinnati Bearcats Big emotionally charged rivalry game, was this LSU -Ole Miss? Nope, Cincinnati-Miami in what may be the last meeting for a while. Bearcats needed a massive comeback, but a win in a rivalry game is always hard fought and at 3-0 they look like they could threaten to take the step forwards they never quite made last season.
18 UCLA Bruins After struggling with SD St last week they play a surprisingly close game vs Purdue. This seems to be a good but not great squad, still a massive step up from where they were a year ago. They have what looks to be a relatively easy schedule if they can avoid tripping themselves up.
19 Louisville Cardinals Huge win over SMU, establishing themselves as one of the big ACC teams competing for the conference this year. Given SMU’s struggles (four turnovers!) vs FSU this result isn’t too surprising (3 more turnovers!), but it’s still a very positive win for Louisville. The tooth birds have a very favorable remaining schedule and should be able to make a run for the ACCCG.
20 Tennessee Volunteers The easy part of the schedule is over, now the Vols get to start playing real opponents, starting with *checks notes* the number one ranked texas longhorns. Well, no one’s in the SEC to win easy games and Tennessee should hope they’ve had enough tune up time to get this young qb ready. Good news is it’s at home.
21 Iowa Hawkeyes Did not fall for the trap, and absolutely dominate UNI as they should. Michigan now is going to be where this squad can prove themselves. If the Hawkeyes are able to maintain their offensive progress vs the Wolverines, it will bode extremely well for them.
22 Missouri Tigers I like Troy, I think they’re one of the best G6 programs year in year out for the past several years. That said, only winning by 10 isn’t great. Going to your rivals house and beating the brakes off them in their new stadium on the other hand? Very nice. I expect the Tigers will be a borderline top 25 team all season and their game against MS St next week may be far more competitive than Missouri would like. Buckle up, Drinkwitz looks like he’s got another rollercoaster season brewing for the Tigers.
23 Houston Cougars Heartbreaking loss. And really a good showing overall from Houston. The season is long and it’s a competitive Big XII this year so don’t count UH out for the Big XII title game yet. Georgia Southern and UCF should be easy games before dealing with a resurgent Kansas state. Then again, space game may be chaotic as it often is. If Houston can take care of business down the stretch they’ll still be a very well regarded team, it’s just going to be much harder this season.
24 West Virginia Mountaineers Big win over a Virginia squad I hold in high regards. WVU is 3-0 and looks like they could make noise in the Big XII this year. Still a very outside threat, but maybe Rich Rodriguez has them rolling in the right direction now. I will admit I haven’t watched enough of them to have a good opinion at this point, but I like what I am seeing in the results column and the box scores.
25 North Dakota State Bison The Bizon are impressing here in their first year in the FBS. 4-0 in the MW and in the drivers seat for the G6 representative, they’ll still face challenges in Dan Mullen’s UNLV in a couple weeks and Wyoming is never easy to play at in the mean time. NDSU, JMU, App State, and USF are the only remaining G6 squads, with a smattering of solid one loss teams also still in the running. It’s far from over but right now North Dakota State is in a great spot for year one.
