2/2 in Tier E: Guessing this will be the team that causes the most head-scratching from my ballot. Have looked rough on offense and of course had that disappointing loss to Arizona State. The best I can figure is that they are bolstered by their preseason component (still 55%), which has them #7 overall. Even so, the performance ranking has them 29th for reasons that appear to have to do with the strength of their defense and relatively high strength of schedule (15th). |

Outgained Arizona St both overall (404-216) and per play (5.45 to 4.15), won more first downs (23 to 14), and even *outpunted* ASU (45 yards/punt to 41). And lost. It is the most mind-boggling box score I have ever seen. |

My poll treats the Michigan State / Arizona State game as a tie due to the missed officiating call at the end that tangibly affected the game outcome. As such, MSU's games against Tulsa and Western Michigan, as well as ASU's games against Kent State and Sacramento State, are the only games affecting polling results, with MSU having a very slight edge in SOS due to Western's 7-5 record last year versus Kent State's 2-10. |

Michigan State falls right in lockstep with Mississippi State. Their loss was closer but I'm not quite as high on Arizona State as I am on Kansas State so it's just about a wash. FPI's 16th ranked team would have so much potential if they could just...move the ball and score points once in a while. |
