Overall Rationale: Realistically, my method uses overall record and comparative performance, but there's so few games played to actually come to a reasonable rating system this early, and so many tough games that regression really needs to happen before the ratings will be accurate, so right now, other than memes, the teams are ranked by record and then predictively how well they'd do against other teams with that record just based on how they played this week compared to how well I thought they'd do at the start of the season.
Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Army West Point | Harambe Write In 2k16- Army showed tremendous grit in winning only their second road game in 5 seasons. |
| USC Trojans | USC, having lost to the consensus #1 team in decisive fashion, has the qualitiest loss of the season. In a predictive sense: no other team can have a more quality loss than USC. If USC and Alabama end up with the same record, USC's loss is going to be less embarrassing, because it was to Alabama. So, for having the qualitiest loss of 2016, USC is the number 2 team going forward. |
| Alabama Crimson Tide | Alabama will probably win the playoff this year. |
| Clemson Tigers | Rough game, but hands down my pick to win the ACC. They have to get past a tough FSU team but they've got all the pieces. |
| Michigan Wolverines | Last week I put Ohio State before Michigan. I really think that it's a coin flip between the two of them so I put Michigan first this week. One of these two will win the B1G. |
| Ohio State Buckeyes | |
| Stanford Cardinal | Stanford was way more dominant vs Kansas State than I was expecting. I wasn't expecting, at the beginning of the season, for a Pac team to have less than 2 losses. But if Stanford can play that way all year they'll finish the season undefeated. |
| TCU Horned Frogs | Despite a rough game, and especially considering Oklahoma's loss, I think TCU is going to win the Big XII, with a lot of consideration going to Texas. |
| Georgia Bulldogs | My pick for the SEC East, especially with Tennessee struggling in their game. |
| Houston Cougars | With a great performance against a solid Oklahoma team they're fully in control of their future, and could be the first Playoff buster. Going undefeated is never easy but with Oklahoma out of the way and if they can play to that level every week they absolutely can pull it out. They'll probably not lose a game until very late in the season looking at their schedule. |
| Washington Huskies | I don't think Washington will really be this high come the end of the season. As I said earlier I didn't think the Pac would even have a team without two losses. Washington Stanford is going to be a good game. That all said: Washington has to beat Oregon before I can take them seriously as a Pac 12 contender, let alone a national contender. They're definitely due for it. |
| Wisconsin Badgers | To start the year I thought LSU would be the #2 team in the SEC and possibly the SEC's second team in the Playoff. After last weekend, either Wisconsin is a much better team than we thought(although I did rank them last week), LSU is a much worse team than we thought, or a combination of both.  |
| Michigan State Spartans | Michigan State lost my confidence in their game this week. I think they'll finish higher than this as they continue through the season, I think they have the tools to be a top 10 team, but from what I saw this weekend they weren't playing like a top 10 team.  |
| Boise State Broncos | |
| BYU Cougars | At the risk of sounding like a homer: Arizona played much better defense than I've seen in almost two decades, and BYU still won. Arizona had one of it's worst offensive outputs in the RichRod era where productive offense is a standard. BYU played to that level. Tough test next week in Utah and a rivalry game but I think they have the team to make a deep run this year. Also: Best punter in the FBS |
| Texas Longhorns | Texas is back, y'all. Or so their game this weekend would have us think. Outside of one or two drives where the defense looked out of position, Texas did very well. Beyond just winning their game, they looked really, really good at what they were doing on both sides of the ball. Second best punter in the FBS |
| Texas A&M Aggies | The better of the two SEC overtime wins, A&M showed UCLA's weaknesses in glaring fashion. |
| Oregon Ducks | |
| Florida State Seminoles | I wasn't really hot on FSU to start the season, and I'm still not hot on them. They won their game but they only really played half a game at a high level. Upside: best kicker in the game. |
| Nebraska Cornhuskers | |
| Tennessee Volunteers | Pretty disappointed with the offensive output from the Vols. But they did win. |
| Baylor Bears | |
| Ole Miss Rebels | |
| LSU Tigers | |
| Notre Dame Fighting Irish |
