Overall Rationale: Not too much of a change from last week. Biggest moves are Michigan dropped out after a terrible game vs Western Michigan. LSU has moved up to the legit category, we’ll see if that’s overreaction, as last season I thought LSU- Clemson was a playoff caliber game. Virginia also took a big leap after impressing me week 0. A little bit of shifting here and there otherwise, but nothing drastic.
| Rank | Team | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1 |
Miami Hurricanes
|
Miami impressed me the most. I don’t expect Stanford to be as bad this year, so beating them as strongly as they did is impressive. Mensah-Toney looks legit. |
| 2 |
Ohio State Buckeyes
|
A bit slow out of the gates but it’s week one. Sayin and Smith look the part and the Buckeyes should be the class of the field in the B1G at this point. Huge game next week. |
| 3 |
Texas Longhorns
|
Manning does not look like he’s taken any steps back in the offseason. Passing game looks good. The only reason I didn’t put them above Ohio State is I was surprised how much Texas State moved the ball especially in the first half. Luckily Ohio State and texas play next week. I’ll certainly be rooting for the Buckeyes. |
| 4 |
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
|
Good dominant second half and a big win for a weak schedule. The Fighting Irish look to be the contenders we all thought they would be. |
| 5 |
Georgia Bulldogs
|
Always hard to judge vs FCS opponents, but the Bulldogs certainly handled business as needed. Unfortunately not much else to say. |
| 6 |
Indiana Hoosiers
|
I was a bit surprised how much a raided UNT was able to do vs the Hoosiers, but it’s also pretty much a brand new team from last year’s squad and its week one. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt for now. |
| 7 |
Oregon Ducks
|
I have mixed feelings about the Ducks’ performance. I think Boise is likely one of the G6 contenders, it’s week one. But you’re also Oregon playing at home. I expect they’ll move back up as the season progresses, but I was disappointed by the Ducks. |
| 8 |
LSU Tigers
|
Yeesh. For all my hatred of the NFL rejects saga I have to admit Lane Kiffin has the Tigers purring along. Last year I saw the Clemson - LSU game as a potential playoff preview. What a doofus I was! But it’s hard to see this year as anything but a death knock for Dabo and a major validation away from the distractions that Kiffin and co brought to Baton Rouge. We’ll see if this holds, but I was extremely impressed by the team at the top of my shit list rn. |
| 9 |
BYU Cougars
|
Big and expected win vs an FCS opponent. After the past couple of years I’m willing to give BYU a bit more credit going into this season. Can’t say much else though as their opponent wasn’t even a good FCS squad. |
| 10 |
Texas Tech Red Raiders
|
Thoroughly unimpressed by their outing vs ACU. This offense is going to be a weakness for the red raiders this season and the defense didn’t impress me much. I didn’t drop them further as it’s week one but they’ll need to show up and show out the next two weeks. |
| 11 |
Oklahoma Sooners
|
Simple dominant win over UTEP. Hard to judge much off of this. Michigan will be interesting, but after Michigans showing this past week OU needs to be demolishing the Wolverines. |
| 12 |
Alabama Crimson Tide
|
They seemed fine, performed about as expected vs ECU. Russell did well and I quite like the kid and want to see him do well, regardless of my dislike for Alabama. |
| 13 |
Virginia Cavaliers
|
I was very impressed by Virginia week 0. I had ranked them preseason off of hope, but a strong showing vs NC St who I think will be solid upper mid ACC was better than most other squads who played cupcakes. |
| 14 |
Washington Huskies
|
Apple cup early is just weird. It was sloppy and not great, but it’s week one and a highly charged rivalry game that makes it hard to judge. I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt but they’ll need to show me that I don’t have them too high by dominating inferior competition the next two weeks. |
| 15 |
USC Trojans
|
I may be under ranking the Trojans here, their wins look good and the defense shutting down Fresno who I expect to be a contender for the PAC is a nice change of pace for a Riley squad. |
| 16 |
Utah Utes
|
I may be too high on Utah but I don’t have much reason to move anyone above them. Took care of an outmatched FCS squad. |
| 17 |
Ole Miss Rebels
|
I’m high on Louisville, so I don’t see a close win as too bad for Ole Miss. My biggest concern is their defense, but I still think they’re one of the better teams in this tier. |
| 18 |
Arizona Wildcats
|
People may think I’m too high on the wildcats but they lived to to preseason expectations beating an always dangerous Northern Arizona. If there’s anything I know about the state of Arizona football, is how dangerous Northern Arizona is to the big two every year, so I’m not going to discount a rather large victory against them. |
| 19 |
Iowa Hawkeyes
|
Fine win over a squad in NIU that I expect will be back end of the MW. With the collapse of Iowa State and potential pants shitting of Michigan, Iowa may not face a real threat until Ohio State. |
| 20 |
Texas A&M Aggies
|
I was quite unimpressed by the offensive showing by the Ags vs one of the worst teams in the FBS. That OLine needs to mesh considerably over the next couple of weeks and games before facing a real challenge in LSU. |
| 21 |
Penn State Nittany Lions
|
Big win over a Marshall squad I expect will be pretty descent. That said it’s still wait and see to get if Campbell has this squad rolling again. |
| 22 |
Virginia Tech Hokies
|
Big win over a middling FCS squad. Hard to say much more, they’ll need to dominate the next couple of games as well. |
| 23 |
Houston Cougars
|
I was unimpressed by the Coogs vs the Beavers. They’ll have to impress before facing Tech to prove they belong. |
| 24 |
UCLA Bruins
|
I was impressed by the Bruins win over Cal and JKS who I think is really quite good. I also think Chesney is a great coach, so I’m high on this squad to make some noise throughout this season and couldn’t really find another team that impressed me for this spot. Iamaleava still has some issues and that’ll likely be one of the limiting factors for UCLA this year, but the kid still has big upside. |
| 25 |
Florida Gators
|
The defense leaves much to be desired, but the offense looks like it has a new life now in the Sumrall era. FAU should be an upper mid team in the AAC this year so not a bad squad, but the defense really looks to be the limiting factor for this squad. RB Baugh is legit and may be one of the best in the country. |
