OKgolfer Ballot for 2023 Week 15 & Bowls

Ballot Type: Human

Submitted: Dec. 5, 2023, 9:49 a.m.

Overall Rationale: I didn't punish underdogs at all for losing conference championship games, since one would assume most similarly ranked teams would also have lost. Thus Louisville stays at 14 after losing to #3 FSU, Iowa stays at 15 after losing to #2 Michigan, and Oklahoma State stays at 23 after losing to #4 Texas. However, Oregon and Georgia did drop a few spots each.

Rank Team Reason
Washington Huskies Last week: #3. Had the best win out of the three undefeated P5 teams, which was enough to push them into the #1 spot.
Michigan Wolverines Last week: #2. Jumped Georgia but were jumped by Washington. Solid win over Iowa.
Florida State Seminoles Last week: #4. Jumped Georgia but remains the lowest ranked undefeated P5 team.
Texas Longhorns Last week: #7. Jumped Ohio State (idle), Georgia (lost), and Oregon (lost). Top ranked 1 loss P5 team.
Ohio State Buckeyes Last week: #5. Teams swapped places around them, but Ohio State didn't move with their idle week.
Alabama Crimson Tide Last week: #9. Good win over Georgia, but not enough to completely wash off the residual stink of the Auburn game.
Georgia Bulldogs Last week: #1. No longer maintaining #1 by inertia, they drop just below Alabama, who has the same record and beat them head to head.
Liberty Flames Last week: #8. Best win of the season for the undefeated Flames, who are responsible for two of New Mexico State's four losses. Not enough to move up in ranking, as Oregon drops below but Alabama jumps.
Oregon Ducks Last week: #6. Lost a tight game vs. Washington and drop a few spots. Still the top ranked 2 loss team.
Oklahoma Sooners Last week: #10. Teams here and below didn't see much movement from last week, since most were idle. Second ranked 2 loss team but has an argument to be top ranked, having arguably the best win in the country (Texas has a slightly worse win by ranking but did it on the road).
Missouri Tigers Last week: #11. Idle.
Ole Miss Rebels Last week: #12. Idle.
Penn State Nittany Lions Last week: #13. Idle.
Louisville Cardinals Last week: #14. Lost to Florida State in a hard-fought (but ugly) game. No change in the ranking for reaching a conference championship game and losing an extra game that most teams don't play.
Iowa Hawkeyes Last week: #15. Similar to Louisville, Iowa was rewarded with an extra game against a top-3 team and lost it. No change in ranking.
LSU Tigers Last week: #16. Idle.
Arizona Wildcats Last week: #18. Idle. Up one spot simply because Tulane lost to previously unranked SMU.
James Madison Dukes Last week: #20. Idle. Up two spots because of Tulane and Toledo's losses.
SMU Mustangs Last week: Unranked (around 26 or 27 in my head). Good win on the road at Tulane by double digits. Finish 11-2 and definitely worthy of ranking. Nearly a spot swap with Tulane, but not quite enough body of work to jump higher than this.
NC State Wolfpack Last week: #21. Idle.
Troy Trojans Last week: Unranked. Beat App State to win the Sun Belt, although the title is dampened by JMU's ineligibility for the conference championship.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish Last week: #22. Idle.
Oklahoma State Cowboys Last week: #23. Lost to #4 Texas by about what they were supposed to. Again no penalty for reaching a title game and being outmatched.
Miami (OH) RedHawks Last week: Unranked. Beat Toledo to win the MAC.
South Dakota State Jackrabbits Last week: #25. SDSU keeps rolling, beating Mercer 41-0 in the FCS playoffs.
