a_bit_of_a_misnomer_ Ballot for 2023 Week 3

Ballot Type: Hybrid

Submitted: Sept. 12, 2023, 8:41 a.m.

Overall Rationale: My take on what a 2020s BCS formula would look like. The human elements are the AP Poll and USA Today Coaches' Poll. The computer elements are the Colley Matrix, FEI, FPI, Entropy, Massey, and Sagarin (NOTE: The Colley Matrix will be added to the formula after week 4). Human and computer elements are weighted equally. Scores are out of 10,000 points rather than a 0 to 1 scale like the old BCS.

Rank Team Reason
Georgia Bulldogs 9,882 points - In a shocking turn of events, Georgia is #1. In other news "The sky is blue!" says star witness!
Ohio State Buckeyes 8,796 points - Computers really like them and the humans don't. I'm with the robots on this one.
Michigan Wolverines 8,510 points - In contrast to Ohio State, the computer polls don't have much love for the Wolverines. I agree with the humans this time.
Texas Longhorns 8,136 points - The human polls like the Longhorns a bit more than the computers do, but they both agree that Texas looks to be back in a big way.
USC Trojans 7,826 points - This is exactly where they should be. USC is legit.
Penn State Nittany Lions 7,683 points - This just objectivley the correct ranking.
Alabama Crimson Tide 7,650 points - The computers are much higher on Alabama than the human pollsters. I'm not anywhere close to writing off the Tide, but their season just got a heck of a lot harder.
Florida State Seminoles 7,646 points - Compared to the AP and coaches, the computers don't really like the Seminoles. I'd put them somewhere between Texas and USC, but the math doesn't agree with me.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish 6,482 points - Again, this is objectivley correct.
Washington Huskies 5,914 points - The computers and humans cancelled eachother out here and came to a very reasonable conclusion.
Oregon Ducks 5,322 points - Maybe a little high, but not unreasonable. The computers like the Ducks a bit more than the humans do.
Tennessee Volunteers 5,197 points - I'm with the computers on this one. The Vols underperformed big time against Austin Peay and deserve their place at #12. They get a bit of help from the human elements.
Oklahoma Sooners 4,829 points - Computers like them, the coaches are indifferent, the AP isn't a fan. I think this is a little high, but I can sort of see why they ended up here.
Utah Utes 4,790 points - There's a case to be made for them to be a spot or two higher, but I think this is reasonable.
LSU Tigers 3,924 points - The Massey ratings HATE the Tigers, but it wouldn't change much if they didn't.
Ole Miss Rebels 3,838 points - The computers are split, the humans are not fans. I'd flip them with LSU, but #16 is fair.
Kansas State Wildcats 3,814 points - Humans and computers were generally in agreement.
Oregon State Beavers 3,090 points - This feels right to me.
North Carolina Tar Heels 1,495 points - The human polls saved the Tar Heels. The computers do not like them at all.
Clemson Tigers 1,407 points - They're not great, but they're definitley not terrible. Being dropped from the AP was a sizable blow to their score.
Colorado Buffaloes 1,325 points - GIMMIE MY THEME MUSIC! The computers clearly are not taking into account the Prime effect and it shows. The Buffs are legit.
Duke Blue Devils 1,237 points - Like Colorado, the human polls like them so they get a good amount of points.
Miami Hurricanes 1,071 points - Both elements are in agreement that the 'Canes should make the top 25 by a hair.
Iowa Hawkeyes 734 points - This is exactly where the Hawkeyes should be.
Texas A&M Aggies 582 points - Look, the computer polls like them for some reason. Don't ask me why.
