bretticus33 Ballot for 2022 Week 11

Ballot Type: Human

Rank Team Reason
Georgia Bulldogs Georgia, my #1 team since they slaughtered Oregon, shut up the people who doubted them and beat Tennessee more easily than the score indicates. They completely shut down the most high powered offense in the country and had their way with Tennessee’s defense when they wanted to. Georgia is clearly the #1 team in the country.
Ohio State Buckeyes Ohio State did not look very impressive against Northwestern. Yes the conditions were yucky, but if weather is what shuts an offense that’s supposed to be that talented down against a 1-7 team. Still, I trust Ohio State to beat 99% of FBS teams on a given day.
Michigan Wolverines Michigan started slow against Rutgers, but took the game over in the 2nd half with an opportunistic defense and a strong ground game. JJ is still progressing as a QB but he’s still a question mark for an otherwise strong and well-rounded Michigan team.
TCU Horned Frogs TCU is oddly reminding me of not the 2014 TCU team but the 2014 Florida State team. They’re winning games in comeback fashion and doing just slightly. It’s a formula that gets TCU in the playoff if they keep winning, but has potential to end in disaster.
Tennessee Volunteers Tennessee finally got a blemish on their record after getting dominated by Georgia. Their offense is still great, but was shut down by Georgia’s defense and their own defense really struggled. Tennessee still has one of the nation’s strongest resumes and certainly the strongest among the 1 loss teams, thus not dropping too far. They’re still in CFP contention but they’ve lost their opportunities to make an impression and need to hope that teams behind them don’t take theirs or that other teams in front falter.
Oregon Ducks Oregon keeps on cruising in the PAC-12 with an easy win over Colorado. Bo Nix had a Heisman-esque day with 5 total TDs. Oregon’s defense is becoming an underrated unit but understandably so after what Georgia did to them. Oregon is the PAC-12 favorite IMO and should still be in CFP contention.
UCLA Bruins UCLA won a high scoring shoot-out over Arizona State by running wild over the Sun Devils. UCLA should be concerned about their defense though. ASU’s offense moved the ball and scored too easily at times.
USC Trojans USC held on against Cal and won by 6 despite holding a larger lead. They let things get too close for comfort. USC does look a lot like Lincoln Riley’s Oklahoma teams with a great offense and questionable defense. It’ll be intriguing to see how USC does in their next big test.
LSU Tigers LSU shut everyone up and justified their controversial ranking by beating Alabama at home. Brian Kelly has the Tigers humming and he now has them in the driver’s seat in the SEC West, also holding the tiebreaker over Ole Miss as well.
Ole Miss Rebels Ole Miss didn’t play this weekend but will be a major beneficiary of the CFB chaos around them. If LSU can pick up a loss, Ole Miss could find themselves in the SECCG.
Clemson Tigers Clemson was utterly dominated on the road by a Notre Dame team that also lost to Marshall and Stanford. The Tigers officially have a QB problem with DJU falling back to earth and Klubnik looking like he isn’t ready to take the reins. Clemson, much like TCU, was reminding me of 2014 Florida State with how they test their luck constantly but it all fell apart against Notre Dame.
Alabama Crimson Tide It’s amazing how a bad season for Alabama is 2 losses. Alabama blew it against LSU and lost on the last play of the game for the 2nd time. The Tide are so agonizingly close to being undefeated with wins over Tennessee and LSU. Instead, they’re out of CFP contention and don’t control their destiny in the SEC.
Utah Utes Utah just went out and did their thing against Arizona. They forced 4 turnovers and put up over 450 yards on offense. Only thing is Cam Rising didn’t look great and they’ll want him to look better when they take on Oregon in a couple weeks.
North Carolina Tar Heels UNC let things get a bit too close for comfort against Virginia, but they got the job done. UNC is still very relevant at the beginning of basketball season and are 2 games up in the division, set to take on Clemson. Drake Maye is continuing to impress and show why he’ll be a 2023 Heisman contender
Tulane Green Wave Tulane is still the leading contender for the G5’s NY6 spot after beating Tulsa in a game that wasn’t as close as the score indicated. Tulane’s dream season might get better when they might get to host Gameday next with UCF coming to town in a huge AAC matchup.
Illinois Fighting Illini Illinois stumbled against a Michigan State team distracted by the attack in the tunnel in Ann Arbor. Bret Beliema’s team had been getting it done with great defense and a powerful ground game. Neither unit were terrible, but they were nowhere near as good as they could be. The Illini are still on track to play OSU/UM in the Big 10 title game.
NC State Wolfpack NC State got it’s biggest win of the season at home over Wake Forest. Their defense held Wake to just 21 points and forced star QB Sam Hartman to throw another 3 INTs. Meanwhile MJ Morris came into his own and had a huge day.
Liberty Flames Liberty picked up arguably the biggest win in program history on the road over Arkansas. The program is flying high but who knows how long it will last with Hugh Freeze being one of the hottest names for job openings, namely Auburn. For the moment, the Flames are just enjoying the great season they’re having post Malik Willis.
Texas Longhorns Texas is back in the top 25 with a road win over Kansas State. They were controversially ranked but justified it themselves. Texas clearly has top 25 talent but their inconsistency has been holding them back. We’ll see how second half Texas does against second half TCU in Austin.
Kansas State Wildcats KSU is an enigma; they go from blowing a lead to TCU to blowing OSU out of the water to failing to come back from a big deficit to Texas. The Wildcats are now in a 3-way tie for 2nd in the Big 12 so there’s chaos yet to be had.
Penn State Nittany Lions Penn State started slow against Indiana but eventually turned on the jets and beat the Hoosiers pretty easily. There’s a clear gulf in the Big 10 between OSU, UM, and everyone else. The Nittany Lions are lower for me because I’m not forgiving of blowout losses. If they were close then I might have them up a few more spots.
UCF Knights UCF held off Memphis, showing off how inconsistent they are. The Knights seem to play to the level of their opponents but they don’t have any bad losses. UCF could be the featured road team of the week when they play Tulane in a massive AAC game that Gameday might go too.
Washington Huskies Washington fought off Oregon State and faulty lights to get to 7-2. Kalen DeBoer has been great in his first season and Michael Penix has been sensational for Washington. The defense was the star against Oregon State though, especially in the air and on 3rd down.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish Marcus Freeman has by far his biggest win as Notre Dame’s HC. The Irish completely tore apart undefeated Clemson. This team is entirely unpredictable with a close loss to Ohio State, a huge win over Clemson, and losses to Marshall and Stanford. It’s a borderline top 25 team until they can find their consistency.
Louisville Cardinals Louisville has won 4 straight and 5 of their last 6, putting themselves in a bowl game when the season ends. Scott Satterfield has likely saved his job with how Louisville has played the past month. The Cardinals took down James Madison with a balanced offense and another strong defensive effort.
