Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Alabama Crimson Tide | Began as my #1 due to their ridiculous roster and still having Saban. No movement thanks to a dominant performance over Utah State |
| Georgia Bulldogs | No movement, absolutely demolished Oregon. I was tempted to put them at #1 but it would take a poor performance/loss for Alabama to drop at all. However, that was a statement game, as they reminded everyone that they're still the defending champs. |
| Ohio State Buckeyes | Up from #4. Didn't cover the spread and looked sloppy, but still beat a top 10 team by double digits. Defense was much improved but while the offense had moments of brilliance it was more inconsistent that we are accustomed to, though, that may just be because of how good the Irish defense is. |
| Clemson Tigers | No change. Very shaky to start the game but defense looked great as always, offense picked up more in the latter stages, will need to see more to know how good this team actually is. Running game is concerning as I expected them to run all over GT even if the passing struggled, the O-line needs to improve and while DJ looked better but not great, his receivers did drop some very catchable passes. Klubnik came in and showed out on his only drive, excellent ball placement and boy is he quick. I am not ready to give up on DJ yet but it's good to know there is more depth at the position than last year. |
| Michigan Wolverines | Up from #8. Excellent game against Colorado State, passing game looked good, but they relied on their run game to rack up points and yards, and their defense got into the backfield time and time again. |
| Oklahoma Sooners | No change. Great Start to the Venables era, left some points on the board as they took their foot off the gas late, and had some inconsistent plays on both sides as they're still learning a new system. Defense wasn't elite but by recent standards it may as well have been last year's UGA, they tackled well, played physical, and didn't give up big plays or have multiple major failures on 3rd down. Offense seemed balance, lots of weapons in the pass and rushing games, still gelling with a few mistakes, and some unwanted punts |
| Baylor Bears | Up from #9. Won 69-10 (nice), only punted twice and seemed unstoppable on offense (Granted it was Albany). |
| Texas A&M Aggies | Up from #10. Defense shut out their opponents but the offense was shaky, only scoring 31 against a vastly inferior team. They also threw 2 picks and struggled to get the ground game moving, only gaining 110 rushing yards, 46 from their QBs. |
| Notre Dame Fighting Irish | Down from #7. A valiant fight from the Irish, they held an incredibly talented offense to only 21 points. It's difficult to come into the Horseshoe week 1 and stay with such a prolific offense, covering the spread and disrupting the Buckeyes should make them feel proud of their performance. Offense was not great but the OSU defense is much improved, also points for the Fullback TD. |
| Miami Hurricanes | Up from #15. Excellent performance against a lesser opponent. Very few mistakes made, they didn't punt once, came away with loss of turnovers and their offense scored at will on the ground and in the air. |
| Florida Gators | Huge jump from the Gators who were initially unranked. Napier had easily the best debut of any coach, defeating a top 10 team at the Swamp in a thriller. Some may argue home field advantage gave them the edge, it's probably true, but many were expecting Utah to compete for a playoff spot so this is a huge win for Florida as they look to return to winning ways under their new head coach. |
| Utah Utes | Down from #5. Despite the loss it was a good performance from the Utes in a difficult place to win. They failed to record a sack, while not giving up one themselves, and couldn't contain Richardson's running ability, but they held the Gator's pass game in check for the most part, they could still run the table in the West but only time will tell. |
| Oklahoma State Cowboys | No change. The game seemed to get out of hand in the 4th as they gave up 22 points and allowed Central Michigan to score 44 in total. The defense clearly misses Knowles, hopefully they can improve quickly under the new DC or else they may need to resort to shoot outs to win this year. |
| Arkansas Razorbacks | Up from #16. It was a hard fought battle for Arkansas but they were resilient in their 31-24 win over Cincinnati, who are still a good team despite the talent lost from last year. KJ Jefferson started his campaign for the heisman by throwing for 3 TDs and carrying in another for all of the Razorback's TDs. Sanders was also a big factor in the run game gaining 117 yards on 5.8 per carry. |
| USC Trojans | Up from #17. All around great performance, yes Rice aren't world beaters, but aside from a shaky 1st quarter that ended 7-7, the Trojans put on a show in Riley's first game. Williams could do no wrong and looked improved, if not great, the defense looked better than it has in a while, with multiple pick 6s. Riley couldn't ask for a better start, and if they can maintain their stellar start they will be a force in the West Coast. |
| Michigan State Spartans | Down from #14. It was a lackluster win over Western Michigan, but they took care of business, the defense looked fine an the offense still played well despite some missteps. Sometimes, week 1 teams have more rust than we thought so take it with a grain of salt. |
| NC State Wolfpack | Down from #12. They struggled mightily against ECU, and had the kicker been better, they should've lost. Perhaps it's just early season rust, or maybe the Wolfpack is in for a tougher year than we thought. |
| Pittsburgh Panthers | |
| Wisconsin Badgers | |
| Kentucky Wildcats | |
| Texas Longhorns | |
| BYU Cougars | |
| Houston Cougars | |
| Penn State Nittany Lions | |
| Oregon Ducks | Huge drop from #11. They were embarrassed and never looked to threaten UGA, their defense was obliterated and their offense was in shambles, Bo Nix doesn't seem to be the answer. For now they'll stay at #25, we need to see if they are that bad or if UGA is just that good, or a bit of both. |
