Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Georgia Bulldogs | Game vs. Samford was over at halftime and the Bulldogs just cruised the 2nd half. Still best team in country |
| Ohio State Buckeyes | CJ Stroud came out with a big game despite JSN not playing. Should have another easy time against Toledo. |
| Alabama Crimson Tide | Alabama was extremely lucky to not leave DKR with a loss. Had Quinn Ewers played, I don't think Alabama would have won. Clearly not the #1 team in the country and despite the talent, has some work to do. BOB needs to work on calling an offense that doesn't rely on Young making plays to save the offense and the whole team needs to work on discipline. |
| Michigan Wolverines | Nothing really learned from pounding Hawaii but JJ came out of the first couple weeks as QB1. Still won't learn much with UConn up next. |
| Clemson Tigers | Clemson has a top 10 defense with a terrible offense. Biggest issues stem from the QB situation where they don't seem to have any good options. Neither DJU or Klubnik look like they should be leading a top 10 team. |
| Oklahoma Sooners | OU started off really slow but came to life in the 2nd half and won easily. Most encouraging sign is how well the defense has played, even though the level of competition hasn't been strong. They should take care of Nebraska but wouldn't be surprised to see them in another close one with the Huskers. |
| Arkansas Razorbacks | Arkansas's defense got tested much more against Spencer Rattler and South Carolina, but they held on enough and the offense had a really nice day. This is a top 10 team until proven otherwise. |
| USC Trojans | I'm cautiously buying into the USC hype. The team looks much much improved thanks to Riley and the slew of transfers. Offense is electric and the defense looks good enough to win 10+ games, but the defense will be tested against Fresno State's offense. |
| BYU Cougars | I've been way higher on BYU than most everyone else and they came up with a huge win at home over Baylor, despite their best efforts to blow it. The defense is a very stout unit that'll be tough to score on but how shot is the kicker's confidence? Next is another good chance to build the resume with a road trip to Autzen |
| Kentucky Wildcats | Is Kentucky a football school now? Yet again Mark Stoops' team came up with a huge road win. The defense is very smart and disciplined. Offense needs to show more though, and who knows how long they'll be without Chris Rodriguez. |
| Miami Hurricanes | Miami is surviving still. Overcame a slow start to comfortably beat Southern Miss, but the first real test of the Cristobal era comes next weekend at Texas A&M. |
| Oklahoma State Cowboys | OK State is playing some very sloppy football. The defense has clearly taken a step back and the offense isn't totally in sync. However the Cowboys won an OOC game against a P5 opponent. |
| Baylor Bears | Baylor played well in a very tough road game. BYU is a very good team and Lavell Edwards Stadium is a very tough place to play. It was a 2OT loss where having a better kicker probably wins them the game. The Bears will still be a contender in the Big 12. |
| Michigan State Spartans | The MSU rushing attack was wonderful. Payton Thorne was far from it. MSU has a strong enough ground game and defense to make some noise in the Big 10, but what does Sparty do about their QB situation because Thorne isn't cutting it. |
| Wake Forest Demon Deacons | Welcome back Sam Hartman. Wake Forest's star QB came back and didn't look like he missed a beat. Wake with Hartman is a completely different animal and one of the best offenses in the country. |
| Tennessee Volunteers | Tennessee picked up a huge road win over Pitt on the back of their defense. That should be an encouraging sign for the Vols and Hendon Hooker had himself a strong game. However the offensive dropoff and lack of run game should be somewhat concerning but it shouldn't be an issue against Akron. |
| Florida Gators | Richardson went from a surprise Heisman contender to looking god awful against Kentucky. Constantly missed throws and couldn't read a defense to save his life. Florida is still a very talented team with a strong defense, but they'll need Richardson to play much better than that. |
| Utah Utes | Utah rebounded by bludgeoning Southern Utah and dropping over 70 on them. This looked more like the Utah team we were expecting but you can't take much from beating up on a 1-10 FCS squad. |
| Ole Miss Rebels | A week after a close call with Troy, Ole Miss looked stronger against Central Arkansas. It's not much of a test but we'll see much more of Ole Miss against Georgia Tech. It'll be interesting to see if both Dart and Altmeyer play. |
| NC State Wolfpack | NC State destroyed Charleston Southern but like many other teams in my top 25, it's hard to really learn much from a game against a 4-6 FCS team. A home game against Texas Tech will provide a much better opportunity to impress. |
| Marshall Thundering Herd | Marshall started off the shockwaves that was the Sun Belt's best day ever when they beat Notre Dame in South Bend. They were impressive on both offense and defense and fully earned that win. Marshall is a leading contender now for the G5's NY6 spot |
| Appalachian State Mountaineers | App State once again has knocked off a top 10 team 15 years after beating Michigan, and they won by dominating the clock. Their defense was superb, especially after their showing against UNC the week prior. App State is behind Marshall due to having a loss, but they're fully entrenched in the NY6 race now. |
| Oregon Ducks | Turns out Eastern Washington isn't as good as Georgia. Oregon looked a lot better and put up their best offensive performance in a long time. Maybe this was Bo Nix's best game in his career. Next up for Oregon is another good test with BYU coming to town, fresh off a huge win of their own. |
| Texas A&M Aggies | How much of his massive payday does Jimbo Fisher owe to Jameis Winston? The Aggie offense is anemic and Haynes King isn't the answer at QB. They lost not just the game and $1.5 million to App State but they lost any margin for error in their CFP dreams, and possibly their NY6 dreams. Miami is an absolute must win now. |
| Penn State Nittany Lions | Penn State is 2-0 with their offense looking decent. The talent to be a consistent top 25 team is there, but James Franklin hasn't found a way to consistently put it together at Penn State. They'll have a good opportunity against Auburn this weekend. |
