JCiLee Ballot for 2023 Final

Ballot Type: Human

Submitted: Jan. 8, 2024, 11:20 p.m.

Overall Rationale: This is the end of an era. The college football that I loved and grew up with has been laid to rest, giving birth to an unknown future consisting of massive national conferences, unsustainable media contracts, unlimited transfers, a twelve-team playoff, and turmoil within the NCAA. While this season was fun and exciting at times, the predominant feeling I have now is one of depression. From the death of the Pac-12 in August to the outrageous snub of Florida State in December, 2023 delivered a sad conclusion to my favorite sport. Congratulations to the Michigan Wolverines, the final champion of college football. Of course, Michigan is not actually the final champion of college football. In future years, football teams representing universities will still compete against one another. Bands will play their fight songs, live mascots will roam, cheerleaders will cheer, fans will pour into large cathedrals in small, otherwise sleepy towns. Each fall Saturday, there will still be hilarious blowouts, wild upsets, frenetic finishes, and goofy blunders. But with the decline of rivalries, tradition, and the march to an NFL imitation, it won't be the same. Whether it's better or worse will be up to each and every viewer, but ultimately, it will be radically different. As for me, I am out as a die-hard college football fan, and naturally, after eight years, this is my final ballot as a /r/cfb poll voter. Thank you to sirgippy for the opportunity. And to those who choose to remain faithful to this sport and their school, I wish you the best of luck.
