Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Georgia Bulldogs | After a couple sloppy weeks and a near upset to Missouri, Georgia looked more like the Georgia we got used to with an easy win over a spiraling Auburn. The defense was stout per usual and Georgia may have their RB situation figured out, which they will have to for sure have figured out to win the SEC and make the CFP again. |
| Ohio State Buckeyes | Ohio State’s offense is the best in the country and the scary part is they’re playing without JSN and Williams yet still moving and scoring with ease. CJ Stroud is living up to the Heisman hype as well. We’re still waiting for Ohio State’s defense to really get tested this season. The bye week won’t test that. |
| Alabama Crimson Tide | Another close call for Alabama as they beat A&M in the much-hyped matchup. Saban bested Fisher and did so without his Heisman QB. Alabama is obviously extremely talented, as is the usual, but they just feel like they’re teetering on the edge of losing a big game. The Tide are surviving, but they have to bring their A-game when they play a hot Tennessee in Knoxville. |
| Clemson Tigers | Clemson is rolling but Boston College was never going to put up much of a fight. Most encouraging for Clemson is another good game from DJU who is playing at a much higher level than he ever did last season. That makes 3 in a row and if DJU can keep playing like this, Clemson will find themselves in the CFP. |
| Michigan Wolverines | Michigan rode a big 2nd half to a 21 point win over Indiana. The Wolverines are playing similar to the older teams under Harbaugh where the defense was the driving force while the offense did just enough to get the win. We’ll learn a lot more about Michigan when Penn State comes to town. |
| Tennessee Volunteers | Tennessee is surging under Josh Heupel and their confidence has to be sky-high. Another big win, this time in LSU’s Death Valley, and they should be an interesting matchup against a shaky Alabama. Hooker has an opportunity to really solidify his Heisman candidacy. |
| Oklahoma State Cowboys | Oklahoma State had to comeback, but the defense clamped down when they needed to and Spencer Sanders stepped up when the offense needed him to. Oklahoma State should be considered the favorite for the Big 12 but TCU might have something to say about that. |
| USC Trojans | USC is playing about as well as could be hoped for in Lincoln Riley’s first season. The star power he brought in is obviously making a difference and USC remains the PAC-12 favorite. Utah, while slumping, should provide USC with their biggest test yet. |
| Ole Miss Rebels | They don’t win them pretty, but Ole Miss is still getting wins. A bit of a sloppy defensive performance was overcome with a big offensive display. However, Kentucky picking up their second loss takes the shine off last week’s win. Ole Miss still has a lot to prove but remain undefeated. |
| UCLA Bruins | Might the Bruins be the best team in LA? A week after upsetting Washington, they beat up Utah as well. Chip Kelly is doing great things with the team and Dorian Thompson-Robinson is playing as well as any QB in the country. |
| Oregon Ducks | Oregon is continuing to show big improvement under Dan Lanning and Bo Nix is proving to be one of the best transfers in the country. The Ducks are very much in the PAC-12 race and are looking better than any of the teams Mario Cristobal was coaching. Maybe Dan Lanning will become one of the nation’s top HCs? |
| TCU Horned Frogs | Sonny Dykes has transformed TCU’s offense. Max Duggan has been superb and their offense is one of the best in the country. The Horned Frogs are undefeated and that win over Kansas was huge, but beating Oklahoma State would catapult them into being the Big 12 favorites. |
| Penn State Nittany Lions | No game this weekend for Penn State while they prepare for Michigan. |
| NC State Wolfpack | NC State squeaked by Florida State who, although is better than they have been recently, should have been beaten by more than 2 points. NC State is still a very good team and it may have been a post-Clemson hangover. This team feels like they still have another loss or two in them. |
| Wake Forest Demon Deacons | Wake Forest easily took apart Army, proving they hate America. However, Army is pitiful this season and anything other than a blowout would have been disappointing for Wake. |
| Kansas State Wildcats | KSU was winning with offensive explosions and huge games from Adrian Martinez, but this time they showed they can win a defensive slug fest. KSU still has a shot to win the Big 12 with games against Oklahoma State and TCU still to come, but for now let the Wildcats enjoy the season they’re having. |
| Syracuse Orange | Syracuse was off this weekend as they prepare to host NC State. The Orange are still undefeated. |
| Mississippi State Bulldogs | Mike Leach’s impact on the Bulldogs is really starting to take hold as MSU dismantled an SEC West opponent for the 2nd straight week. It’s making that loss to LSU more puzzling and that could be what prevents the Bulldogs from playing for an SEC championship, but it’s nice to see the Pirate Coach having success at another program. |
| Illinois Fighting Illini | Illinois won an ugly, quintessential Big 10 battle with Iowa. The Illini are still first in the Big 10 West and showing they’re capable of winning ugly games, a must in the Big 10. |
| Cincinnati Bearcats | Cincinnati is probably still the leading contender to win the AAC and get the NY6 bid for the 3rd straight season. This team is clearly not as strong as last season’s but it is still a quintessential Cincinnati team with a good defense and efficient offense. |
| Kansas Jayhawks | Kansas’ fairy tale start came to reality as they lost their first game of the season. Jalon Daniels’ health will be a concern, but his backup came in and threw 4 second half TDs. Next weekend might be the first time ever that they’ve been favorites over Oklahoma, and especially in Norman. |
| James Madison Dukes | Welcome to the FBS James Madison! They’re having arguably the best first season in FBS history but it’s a shame they’re not bowl eligible due to a postseason ban. |
| Texas Longhorns | Texas is 4-2, but they’re clearly a top 25 team with Quinn Ewers. I strongly believe they’d be undefeated and in the top 5 had Ewers not missed almost 3 full games. I expect to see Texas rise up the rankings more. |
| Utah Utes | That was ugly. Utah went to the Rose Bowl hoping it would be their first trip there this season and left thinking that might be their only trip there this season. The defense couldn’t stop UCLA’s offense and the offense was way too mistake prone. It might get uglier with USC next up. Utah is turning into a disappointment. |
| North Carolina Tar Heels | UNC finally won a game with defense and improve to 5-1. Mack Brown is coaching himself off the hot seat and has himself another star QB in Drake Maye. The Tar Heels might not win the ACC but are capable of playing spoiler. |
