Overall Rationale: A mix of the eye test, actual resume ranking and in almost every situation of same record teams, head to head competition. This combination of factors properly accounts for what we've seen on the field, ignoring preseason rankings and only slightly using talent composite as a measure. Quality losses can and often are better than wins, and early on it doesn't make sense to view losses more harshly. As the season goes on and more teams lose, the value of a loss against your ranking increases, but for now a 2 loss team can be better than a 1 loss team, and a 1 loss team better than an undefeated team.
| Rank | Team | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1 |
Miami Hurricanes
|
Best undefeated team, though concerns are growing after FSU/UNC |
| 2 |
Utah Utes
|
Very similar to Miami, but Miami's quality win over Wake is the difference |
| 3 |
Georgia Bulldogs
|
Best 1 loss team, haven't missed a beat since Auburn |
| 4 |
BYU Cougars
|
Slightly stronger resume than Georgia, but weaker play is the difference |
| 5 |
UCLA Bruins
|
Undefeated is undefeated, but schedules are schedules. UCLA's wins look very poor |
| 6 |
Kentucky Wildcats
|
Playing well and have a tough SOS, but playing close games |
| 7 |
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
|
Naming the score at this point, but weak opponents |
| 8 |
Texas Tech Red Raiders
|
Strong resume with 2 very good wins, but a bad loss as well |
| 9 |
Indiana Hoosiers
|
Lacking as many quality wins and play on the field is very poor |
| 10 |
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
|
Struggled with a 2 win Navy, have 0 quality wins at this point |
| 11 |
Texas Longhorns
|
3 great wins make them the best 2 loss resume, but those 2 losses are horrific |
| 12 |
Ole Miss Rebels
|
Behind Texas because of H2H, however play on the field is great |
| 13 |
USC Trojans
|
Bounced back big time by beating OSU, but the losses hurt the resume a lot |
| 14 |
Ohio State Buckeyes
|
Behind USC because of H2H, opportunity to move up the rankings with their schedule |
| 15 |
Tennessee Volunteers
|
Losses to SC and Texas only look better |
| 16 |
Alabama Crimson Tide
|
Behind Tennessee because of H2H, have a really great win over Kentucky |
| 17 |
Houston Cougars
|
Lack a true signature win, however 2 strong losses |
| 18 |
Arizona Wildcats
|
Also lack a true signature win, however they also have 2 less strong losses |
| 19 |
Iowa Hawkeyes
|
Playing extremely well, however the losses are quite poor |
| 20 |
LSU Tigers
|
Level of play is near the top of the SEC, but lack any quality wins |
| 21 |
Boise State Broncos
|
Starting to struggle, gap between them and other G6 is closing |
| 22 |
UTSA Roadrunners
|
Continuing to win, however the AAC is inferior to the Pac for SOS |
| 23 |
New Mexico Lobos
|
Like UTSA they continue to win, however the MWC is a step behind the AAC for SOS |
| 24 |
South Carolina Gamecocks
|
Best 3 loss team and one of the hottest in the country, early season struggles have been wiped away |
| 25 |
Northwestern Wildcats
|
Lost to Oregon, however NW still has a good loss to IU and is playing well anyways |
