Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Oregon Ducks | Congrats on the best regular season in the country Ducks, but now the stakes get really high. Can't waste Michigan's gift and gotta beat Penn State |
| Texas Longhorns | Texas finally got their big win of the season and continued their 14 year stranglehold on the Lone Star Showdown. There's something poetic about Texas making the SECCG in their first SEC season by beating A&M, who has yet to reach the SECCG after over a decade in the conference. Rematch against Georgia in Athens up next. |
| Penn State Nittany Lions | Michigan was Penn State's MVP on Saturday. Slow start against Maryland but ended up dominating. Let's see if James Franklin can finally win a big game. |
| Georgia Bulldogs | When Georgia is on, they're the best team in the country. Problem is Georgia isn't on more often than not and it's nearly cost them damaging losses to Kentucky and Georgia Tech. We'll see which Georgia shows up next weekend against Texas, who they dominated earlier in the season. |
| Notre Dame Fighting Irish | Final score wasn't indicative of how the game really went, but nonetheless the Irish are locked into a CFP spot. |
| Tennessee Volunteers | Slow start against Vanderbilt, but they eventually went on a nice scoring run and beat their in-state rival. Tennessee is a lock for the CFP. |
| SMU Mustangs | The team Florida State specifically mentioned in their lawsuit as bringing down the conference ended up being the top dawg in the ACC in the regular season. Even if the Stangs fall to Clemson, SMU should be a playoff team (key word: should) |
| Ohio State Buckeyes | I'm so glad people are finally realizing Ryan Day's seat has been hot this entire time. $20 million spend on the roster, millions more to get Chip Kelly to call plays, and the worst Michigan team in the last 5+ years, and Day STILL can't beat Michigan. Turns out the guy born on 3rd isn't that good of a coach. |
| Indiana Hoosiers | Nice rebound by Indiana. The Hoosiers' magical season should continue with a CFP spot. |
| Boise State Broncos | Ashton Jeanty for Hei2man |
| Arizona State Sun Devils | Honestly, Kenny Dillingham should be in contention for Coach of the Year. He's done a marvelous job at ASU and is a win away from a CFP bid. |
| Alabama Crimson Tide | Run from it. Dread it. Alabama in the CFP arrives all the same. |
| South Carolina Gamecocks | I know Ole Miss has the H2H win over SCAR, but SCAR's overall resume is just so much better than Ole Miss' that I have to forgo the H2H factor. Another huge win for SCAR in the Palmetto Bowl, but may not be enough for CFP hopes. |
| Ole Miss Rebels | Wasn't pretty, but other teams lost to their shitty rivals. CFP dreams probably dead still |
| Iowa State Cyclones | Congrats on the first ever 10-win season, getting it in Farmageddeon. Chance at a CFP spot if they can take care of Arizona State. |
| Syracuse Orange | Fran Brown should also be in consideration for Coach of the Year. First 9+ win season since 2018 and only their 3rd such season this century. |
| Miami Hurricanes | We all knew Miami were kinda fraudy right? Will be interesting to see if the committee still has Miami in their field; #6 was way too high to begin with. |
| UNLV Rebels | Comfortable win over Nevada and the Rebels are a win away from being part of the first ever 12 team playoff. Huge game coming up in Boise on Friday night. |
| BYU Cougars | It didn't end in a Big 12 title, but BYU should be extremely proud of the season they had, especially when compared to their preseason expectation. |
| Illinois Fighting Illini | Illinois is one of the quietest 9-3 teams this season, their first since 2007 under Ron Zook. Congrats on the season Illinois |
| Colorado Buffaloes | Pretty comprehensive beatdown of Oklahoma State, even if there was some shameless stat padding at the end there. |
| Clemson Tigers | Somehow, some way, Clemson still has a shot at the CFP despite losing to just about every good team they've played. Gotta imagine confidence in Dabo is quickly fading among the Clemson faithful though. |
| Missouri Tigers | Missouri doesn't feel like a 9-3 team, yet here they are at 9-3. Don't know how to feel about the Tigers |
| Army West Point | Nice win over UTSA at home, and it appears Army will host the AAC title game against Tulane. However, any shot at stealing a CFP bid appear dead with UNLV beating Nevada |
| Memphis Tigers | What a weird team Memphis was this season. Some poor games that left you questioning them, but some solid performances that remind you of the talent they have. Great win over Tulane on the road, but I'm sure the AAC didn't appreciate that. |
