shadowwingnut Ballot for 2023 Week 12

Ballot Type: Computer

Submitted: Nov. 14, 2023, 7:17 a.m.

Overall Rationale: Works like a BCS style computer: No priors, no margin of victory. Numbers included in the explanations are mostly to show differences in ranking points and don't correlate to specific scores.

Rank Team Reason
Washington Huskies Up 1, 599.73 - Almost certainly will be the number 1 if 13-0 on account of the computer loving the Pac-12 this season like nothing else
Ohio State Buckeyes Down 1, 561.23 - Haven't put a foot wrong. Just Washington's back-loaded schedule catching up
Michigan Wolverines Up 3, 552.36 - Finally played a real opponent. No longer carried by the computer weirdly enjoying the results of certain Big Ten West teams (Minnesota still top 40 looking at you in particular)
Texas Longhorns Down 1, 552.02 - Top 1 loss team. Iowa St won't drop Texas as much as you might think (Cyclones are 28th)
Florida State Seminoles Same, 540.04 - Just survive and advance. Who cares what a computer says at this point?
Alabama Crimson Tide Down 2, 538.10 - Fell two spots after beating Kentucky. Just a reminder that the SEC below Tennessee (26th) is more of a disaster zone than most think this season
Oregon Ducks Same, 532.64 - Just keeps beating teams in a good Pac-12. Likely will be behind Georgia next week, finally.
Georgia Bulldogs Up 3, 507.67 - The slow climb continues. This ranking is another reminder that the middle and low end of the SEC is garbage this season and Georgia's schedule overall is still pretty bad despite the two ranked teams the last two weeks.
Penn State Nittany Lions Same, 501.19 - No punishment for losing to the 2nd and 3rd ranked teams and beating everyone else as the Iowa win keeps them highly propped up. Highest ranked 2 loss team.
Missouri Tigers Up 9, 485.45 - That's a big surge at this point in the season. In addition to conference opponents doing decently well, out of conference foes Kansas St and Memphis are helping this ranking more than Kentucky
Ole Miss Rebels Down 3, 482.20 - Should be happy there's no margin of victory here or the fall would likely be much worse
Oklahoma Sooners Up 4, 479.82 - Back in the win column, back moving up. Unlikely to reach their #3 high water mark or even their #7 ranking from the week of their first loss
Iowa Hawkeyes Up 7, 478.51 - Reminder that past opponents winning games are almost as important as who you are playing yourself at this point in a no margin of victory resume ranker.
Utah Utes Down 2, 469.66 - Honestly about as good of a season as could be expected given injuries. And still another ranked team remaining this week too. Highest 3-loss team
Louisville Cardinals Down 5, 461.98 - Playing bad teams late in the season doesn't help much (just a reminder for SoCon Saturday for some SEC teams this week). Also losing to 2-8 Pitt is a terrible loss. Lowest P5 1-loss team
Oregon State Beavers Up 2, 454.90 - I just don't see the top 10 ranking that they are carrying in the AP Poll as legit considering losses to Washington St and Arizona along with second best win over UCLA losing value by every offensive play the Bruins run. Glad the computer agrees right now but has the most space to move up of any team here with the remaining 2 games.
USC Trojans Same, 453.13 - Just a note that teams that have played more games sometimes have inflated rankings. With a Thanksgiving weekend bye, the Trojans will fall then. Highest ranked 4-loss team
Kansas Jayhawks Down 3, 440.22 - Surprised the fall wasn't further considering Texas Tech is barely in the top 50. Still an amazing accomplishment over last season and this year even though they are now down to QB3.
Oklahoma State Cowboys Down 5, 437.92 - That's two egregious losses that the old no margin of victory computer doesn't hate as much as most people would. It is what it is when you do a computer ranking that is basically to mock old BCS computers by ranking as well as they do.
Arizona Wildcats Up 1, 426.78 - Sure up 1 over last week. Up 25 over 3 weeks ago.
Kansas State Wildcats Up 2, 424.67 - Is it weird that I think this team might be the best in the Big 12? OT on the road at Texas and close losses to Missouri and Oklahoma St are hardly damning even if the computer doesn't love this team's wins
James Madison Dukes Down 9, 423.57 - Playing UConn at this point in the season is generally a good way to tank the ranking. Top G5 team. Since this team is ineligible and no other G5s are in this top 25, here's the next 5 G5 teams: 29 Fresno St, 33 Troy, 35 Liberty, 37 UNLV, 46 Tulane (the computer absolutely hates, hates, hates the American this season)
Notre Dame Fighting Irish Down 1, 420.11 - Whatever. I'm still laughing that Notre Dame got sent to the ghetto that is the Pac-12 Network for the Stanford game.
LSU Tigers Up 1, 414.82 - See SEC terrible after top 6 teams
Duke Blue Devils Up 2, 400.84 - Up after losing and ahead of the team that beat them and has a better record? Yes. Don't lose to terrible teams (North Carolina to Virginia) and the 15-40 zone was mostly a death trap last week.
