ColombianInIowa24 Ballot for 2022 Final

Ballot Type: Hybrid

Submitted: Jan. 10, 2023, 3:20 p.m.

Overall Rationale: Loss based ranking to create tiers. Algorithm assigning points within and comparison across tiers. Mostly automatic with user intervention to settle ties. Not fully optimized yet, needs to be able to take into account quality of wins which will be done in future by ranking at time of win.

Rank Team Reason
Georgia Bulldogs Absolutely bodied number 2, even after having a lackluster performance in the semifinal. I don't think they prepared for Ohio State actually having a run game, and OSU played the best I have seen them play all year. Georgia is truly deserving of 15-0. Still they got it done and proceeded to knock the lights out of TCU, to the point they almost fell below the team they beat. Truly the best team in the country and looked a league of their own. The new Alabama. Losses: NONE. Notable Wins: #2 TCU (Big XII Champ), #5 Ohio State, #7 Tennessee, #16 Oregon, #20 LSU, #21 Miss. St.
TCU Horned Frogs Sad way to end the season for the Cinderella, but they got so far! You cannot tell me they didn't belong. They beat Michigan and we must admit to ourselves that they would have also been blown out by Georgia. Ends the season 13-2 after destroying the Big XII gauntlet only to run out of gas at the end. Losses: #1 Georgia (National and SEC champ), #14 Kansas State (Big XII champ). Notable wins: #3 Michigan (B1G champ), #14 Kansas State (Big XII champ). Big XII regular season champ.
Michigan Wolverines Surprised me by losing to TCU. Played real well all season, but couldn't pull it off against another conference champ. Oh well, still impressive, with a 13-1 record. Losses: #2 TCU. Notable wins: #5 Ohio State, #6 Penn State. B1G champ.
Tulane Green Wave Huh? An American team again at #4? They weren't even in the playoff! Yes my dear friend, but they ended up with the more impressive wins, while Ohio State has impressive losses. Surprising even to me that the model preferred them but I agree with the quality of their wins and redemption against UCF making them a 1-loss school in the eyes of the model, inexplicably as ever to Southern Miss and wins against the second best teams of two different and deep P5 conferences in addition to playing another game by being a conference champ. Losses: UCF, Southern Miss (!?) Notable wins: #9 USC, #14 Kansas State (Big XII champ). American Athletic Conference champ.
Ohio State Buckeyes Surprisingly bumped down by the impressiveness of Tulane. They played spectacularly against Georgia and looked like the #2 team in the nation for a second. A brief second. Still their lackluster performances earlier in the season are more intriguing to the model's eye and so Ohio State stays here forever bounded in the season by Michigan and rolled over by a Green Wave. Losses: #1 Georgia (National and SEC champ), #3 Michigan (B1G Champ) Notable Wins: #6 Penn State, (#28) Notre Dame.
Penn State Nittany Lions The team that beat those that were inferior and lost to those that were better ending the season 11-2. Literally as chalk as can be. Out powers Tennessee in the ranking with Ohio State's help. Losses: #3 Michigan, #5 Michigan. Notable wins: #8 Utah (Pac-12 Champ).
Tennessee Volunteers An impressive team all year round that showed it's true colors. Wrapped up the season by beating up the best the ACC could muster and looked dominant after the absolute shocker at S.Car ending the season 11-2. Losses: #1 Georgia (National and SEC champ), S.Car. Notable wins: #13 Alabama, #18 Clemson (ACC champ), #20 LSU.
Utah Utes Beat USC twice, even if they lost the Rose Bowl again when down by injury. Penn State was always ranked higher anyway. Lots of strange losses but, the Pac-12 champ gets credit for being a champ at 10-4. Loss to Florida binds them below Tennessee. Losses: #6 Penn State, #16 Oregon, (#26) UCLA, Florida. Notable wins: #9 USC (x2), #12 Oregon State. Pac-12 champion.
USC Trojans Ah... LA school defense never fails to impress me. After getting trounced by the Utes in the Pac-12 champion to get a second loss, the Pac-12 runner up ended 10-3 with another loss in shocking fashion to the respectable American champ Tulane. Still two of the losses were to the same school that appeared to be it's Kryptonite, and another to #4. Losses: #4 Tulane, #8 Utah (x2). Notable wins: #12 Oregon State, Fresno State (MWC champ)
Troy Trojans 12-2 record speaks for itself here. The SBC champ (who beat the C-USA champ) may not have won by impressive margins, but win it did, one which hardly occurred. The other, a beginning of the year loss to a solid team. Model doesn't like their chance against USC. Losses: App State (miracle) and Ole Miss. Notable wins: #15 UTSA (C-USA champ). Sun Belt champion.
Washington Huskies Pac-12 bias continues here, with the Washington Huskies ending the season with a dominant win over Texas. At 11-2, the Huskies win quite a bit of respect by playing in a remarkably deep Pac-12. Losses: (#26) UCLA, Arizona State. Notable wins: #12 Oregon State, #16 Oregon.
Oregon State Beavers An unfortunate bowl berth, but Oregon State didn't flounder where it shouldn't have leaving them at 10-3. An absolutely dominant win over a weak Florida to end the season and some great wins to close the season land the Beavers the 12th spot. Like Penn State, beat the teams it was supposed to beat and lost where it couldn't, cursed with a rough schedule. Losses: #8 Utah (Pac-12 champ), #9 USC, #12 Washington. Notable wins: #16 Oregon, Fresno State (MWC champ).
Alabama Crimson Tide Rose a bit with other teams flowing around but you already know what I and the model consider of their close wins. Surprisingly didn't gain all that much from beating KSU, more through limiting teams. Model prefers Oregon State over Alabama. Losses: #7 Tennessee, #20 LSU. Notable Wins: #14 KSU (Big XII champ), #21 Miss. State.
Kansas State Wildcats Losing to Alabama like that is humiliating, but still maintained some dignity with a fall to this ranking all the same ending the season 10-4. Didn't lose to anyone horrible at least and lost only to one team considered worse. Prefers them over UTSA. Losses: #2 TCU, #4 Tulane (AAC Champ), #13 Alabama, Texas. Notable wins: #2 TCU, Big XII champ.
UTSA Roadrunners Fell a bit after losing to Troy, but Troy is considered a good team and views its loss as rare. Not sure why my model likes UTSA so much. Either way, favors them over Oregon in HTH and end up here with a 10-3 record. Losses: #10 Troy (SBC champ), Texas, Houston. Notable wins: C-USA champ.
Oregon Ducks Looked like hot trash playing against UNC to the wire as a far better team. Oh well, more reasons to put them below UTSA, which my model did by default with their 10-3 record. Losses: #1 Georgia (National and SEC champ), #11 Washington, #12 Oregon State. Notable wins: #8 Utah (Pac-12 champ), (#26) UCLA.
South Alabama Jaguars Disgusting performance at the end of the year with their obliteration by Western Kentucky. Due to their record they are retained with their 10-3 season in the Sun Belt that my model likes. Losses: #10 Troy (SBC champ), (#26) UCLA, Western Kentucky. Notable Wins: Error 404 (not found).
Clemson Tigers ACC bad this year and Clemson kept it up with that loss to Tennessee that was expected. Just didn't expect they would lose like that. Ends the season 10-3. Losses: #7 Tennessee, Notre Dame, S.Car. Notable wins: #19 Florida State. ACC champ.
Florida State Seminoles Actually rated above Alabama but held down by virtue of losing to Clemson. Seeing as they have the same amount of losses, I value head-to-head first. Ends the season 10-3 as well, but played too close with Oklahoma to feel good about them. Played better at the end of the season, with meh losses over solid but not great teams mid-season. Losses: #18 Clemson (ACC champ), Wake Forest, NC State. Notable wins: #20 LSU.
LSU Tigers Blew the doors of a garbage Purdue team. So what? Should I be impressed? Still not that great and shows the down quality of the SEC West (will SEC East flexed). Ends the season 10-4. Loss to FSU keeps them here. Losses: #1 Georgia (National and SEC Champ), #7 Tennessee, #19 Florida State, Texas A&M. Notable wins: #13 Alabama, #21 Miss. St.
Mississippi State Bulldogs More SEC West, got themselves here by losing only to quality teams (almost) ending the season 9-4. Looked alright against Illinois. Loss to LSU keeps them here. Losses: #1 Georgia (National and SEC Champ), #13 Alabama, #20 LSU, Kentucky. Notable Wins: Error 404 (not found)
Air Force Falcons Here solely by record (10-3) as their SOS is weak and barely merit. Still considered better than Pitt though and looked solid against Baylor so I can't through them out. Ironically the only team from the MWC to make it didn't play in the championship game. Losses: Boise State, Wyoming, Utah State. Notable wins: Error 404 (not found)
Pittsburgh Panthers The bane of my existence. The model has a tier system of parentage within tiers and it all came to a tried and true test when Pitt decided to upset UCLA. Pitt has a horrible score for a Tier 4, but from parentage has 5 children of equal or higher standing that are required to be below. Since head-to-head matters, UCLA and Duke naturally remained below. Separately, JMU was evaluated on an individual basis against Tier 4 schools and determined to be a child of Pitt as well. Since Marshall had equal score to Pitt they were also compared and Marshall was found to be below. Further, Marshall has its own child in Notre Dame leading to a face off within Pitt's children. Regardless by absorbing all these things, Pitt ends up at #22 with it's own 9-4 record. Losses: #7 Tennessee, UNC, Louisville, Georgia Tech. Notable wins: #24 Duke, (#26) UCLA.
Duke Blue Devils One of my teams is ranked, and it's the basketball school! Ends the season 9-4 and is the most distinguished of Pitt's children, usurping UCLA by the horrific nature of their defense that my model despises. Losses: #23 Pitt, UNC, Kansas, Georgia Tech. Notable wins: Error 404 (not found, can't have anything in a down ACC).
James Madison Dukes A surprising return, which somehow was determined by the model to beat UCLA. to claim this spot. Screwed of accurate analysis by the NCAA policies. Ends season 8-3. Losses: Marshall, Louisville, Georgia Southern. Notable wins: Error 403 (access to full games forbidden by NCAA). Next 5: UCLA, Marshall, Notre Dame, Cincinatti, Ohio.
