Rank Team Reason
Georgia Bulldogs After looking immortal the first few weeks of the season, Georgia is suddenly looking a lot more mortal. The defense is showing more leaks, the running game is struggling, and it all culminated in a near upset on the road at Missouri. I still think UGA is the best team in the country, but they have to start playing like it against rival Auburn.
Ohio State Buckeyes The Buckeye offense is clicking like crazy and the defense is playing well enough. Ohio State can definitely beat anybody in the country but my concern is how improved is the defense really?
Alabama Crimson Tide The biggest concern with Alabama is the health of Bryce Young. Saban said his shoulder injury wasn’t considered serious, but the offense is a lot better with the reigning Heisman winner. There’s also concerns with the WR corps and the consistency of the defense.
Clemson Tigers Clemson is now getting a version of DJU they can win with. For the 2nd straight week, DJU played well against a ranked opponent and Clemson is now in full control of the ACC while playing like a CFP team.
Michigan Wolverines Michigan’s looking more and more like the Harbaugh teams of old where the defense is really good and the offense is doing just enough. Michigan will stay a ranked, and possibly top 10, team while playing this way but against Ohio State it won’t work.
Oklahoma State Cowboys OK State is the clear leader in the Big 12. The Cowboys picked up a big road win over Baylor and Spencer Sanders is playing as well as he ever has.
USC Trojans This new-look USC has lived up to the billing so far. They’re undefeated and while their schedule hasn’t been tough, USC can only play who they have on there.
Tennessee Volunteers Bye week
Ole Miss Rebels Ole Miss shut up the critics who questioned their high ranking and beat their first major test in Kentucky. The defense won the day for Ole Miss, holding the Kentucky offense to under 20 points.
Utah Utes Utah wiped Oregon State and after their Week 1 debacle against Florida, the Utes are looking like the team that garnered the preseason hype. Both offense and defense are clicking for Utah.
Oregon Ducks Oregon followed up their huge Wazzu comeback with an easy win over Stanford. Bo Nix is playing well but there can still be improvement with the defense. Arizona could provide an interesting challenge.
Penn State Nittany Lions It was a sloppy ugly day in Happy Valley and the weather proved to be an equalizer. Still, Penn State won and the game was never really in doubt. PSU is off to a great start and they get a bye week now to rest up for Big 10 play.
Kentucky Wildcats Kentucky was playing with fire the last couple weeks and they finally got burned. The offense hasn’t been encouraging and Will Levis has to start stepping up and playing better. The defense is the biggest reason why Kentucky is where they are.
BYU Cougars BYU should have played better against a struggling Utah State side that started a QB in his first career start. There are concerns about how BYU plays in the first half of games and that could cause problems down the road.
NC State Wolfpack NC State had a huge opportunity to make a statement and justify their hype but failed to sieze it. That isn’t to say they played poorly though. Devin Leary’s performance was a bit of a letdown but Clemson’s defense is good.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons Wake Forest rebounded from a crushing loss to Clemson with a big win on the road in Tallahassee against a then-undefeated Florida State. The offense was great as is the norm for Sam Hartman’s crew, but the defense stepped up and played well too.
TCU Horned Frogs Who would have thought TCU would become a leading contender in the Big 12? Sonny Dykes has breathed new life into the program and it resulted in an absolute beat down of Oklahoma.
UCLA Bruins Nobody was really taking the 4-0 Bruins seriously until they built a huge lead on Washington, and then nearly blew it. Still, UCLA is 5-0 and becoming a factor in the PAC-12 race.
Kansas Jayhawks The story of the season keeps on winning, but they may have been fortunate to beat Iowa State. ISU’s special teams ineptitude was the difference here and Kansas did not play their best game.
Kansas State Wildcats Kansas State pulled away from Texas Tech late but the shine of their big win over Oklahoma was dulled a bit by TCU killing the Sooners. Adrian Martinez is playing incredible right now.
Syracuse Orange Syracuse is undefeated still after beating Wagner in a 50 minute game. We don’t know how “for real” the Orange are but 5-0 is 5-0 and they’re 2-0 in ACC play.
Illinois Fighting Illini Illinois just laid the wood to Wisconsin in Camp Randall and are looking like arguably the best team in the Big 10 west. That loss to Indiana is still stinging though.
LSU Tigers LSU is arguably a blocked XP away from being 5-0 at this point. Brian Kelly is working his magic on the program and LSU is making a living on the comeback. This isn’t 2019 LSU but it’s still a fringe top 25 LSU.
Mississippi State Bulldogs Mike Leach’s Miss State team has been flying a bit under the radar. They’re a blown lead against LSU away from being undefeated with wins over LSU and A&M.
Baylor Bears Both of Baylor’s losses are to ranked teams, but at some point Baylor has to win these kinds of games to justify them being ranked. Both offense and defense can use some improvement with consistency.
