Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Clemson Tigers | no change from preseason - Clemson was dominant and commanding. Should be a good test next week against the Aggies. |
| Alabama Crimson Tide | Bama picked up where they left off - the clear 2nd best team in the nation. |
| Georgia Bulldogs | Despite not being as dominant as Kirby probably would have liked, UGA never trailed in a conference matchup against Vandy. With the struggles of the rest of the division in week 0/1, UGA's path to Atlanta looks clear with their biggest tests coming in the November cross-divisional games. |
| Oklahoma Sooners | Wasn't able to watch this game but OU looks as good as advertised even if their defense gave up more points than they would have liked. Isn't that the Big XII motto? |
| Ohio State Buckeyes | Justin Fields looked good, Ryan Day looked comfortable. |
| Michigan Wolverines | Michigan looked like Michigan - not as explosive on offense nor as dominant as their talent gap should prove, but when other teams were struggling/losing, they did enough to take care of business. |
| Notre Dame Fighting Irish | A little closer than they'd have liked in the first half, but overall not enough to really downgrade the Irish. I expect the Georgia game will tell us a lot about both teams. |
| LSU Tigers | LSU looked dominant and ran up the score on GA Southern. Should expect to see Burrow really come into his own. |
| Texas Longhorns | Texas put up a big number on LaTech and continues to be the 2nd best team in the Big XII. |
| Auburn Tigers | Auburn probably should have lost this game but they pulled a great win out in the end and spared the SEC's blushes after a less-than-stellar weekend. I think it says as much about how good Oregon is that Auburn barely managed to overcome them. |
| Texas A&M Aggies | Aggies - we'll see how they do in week 2 with Clemson. But so far so good. |
| Washington Huskies | Didn't watch this game but Eason looks good early and they should be one of the favorites to win the Pac12. |
| Penn State Nittany Lions | 79 is a lot of points even if you're playing against air. Oof. |
| UCF Knights | UCF played with a chip on their shoulder and ran up a big win. A matchup against Stanford will be their only big P5 matchup this year. |
| Florida Gators | Florida looked bad against Miami but I think a lot of people undervalue the Hurricanes right now. If Franks can become a more efficient QB then Florida should be able to be competitive. They're the only real team with a shot at the SEC East besides UGA. |
| Utah Utes | Utah didn't look super convincing in the Holy War, but they're still the favorites in the Pac12 South. They took care of business. |
| Oregon Ducks | Per above, Oregon looked great against a very good Auburn team in an outright slugfest. Herbert is one of the best QBs in the nation and he's surrounded by talent. I don't like overcrediting teams for losing games, but 0-1 Oregon still looks better than a bunch of teams that won. |
| Wisconsin Badgers | QB play wasn't great but Taylor remains one of the elite RBs and a difference-maker for them. |
| Iowa Hawkeyes | Didn't see Iowa's game but a perfectly fine score keeps them on the edges of the B1G conversation. |
| Michigan State Spartans | Sparty dispatched Tulsa and gets to hang around. |
| Washington State Cougars | The Cougars put up a big number in week 1 but it's hard to know where they stand until conference play gets going. |
| Syracuse Orange | Syracuse is still on the outside looking in in the ACC thanks to Clemson, but they had a good week 1 showing. |
| Stanford Cardinal | Unconvincing win but against a more than competent Northwestern team. |
| Nebraska Cornhuskers | Nebraska looked ugly and I think the Martinez hype is overblown, but unlike Iowa St they didn't need 3 OTs to win their game. |
| Miami Hurricanes | I thought Miami was a fringe contender last week and enough other teams played poorly (Iowa St) or lost (Northwestern) to warrant putting them in the rankings at 0-1. I don't think Manny Diaz will have an elite team this year but I could see an 8-win season. I'm probably buying Miami over a couple teams currently ranked above them. |
