Overall Rationale: Early season rankings are based largely on expected results versus other ranked teams, and as the season goes leans more heavily on actual resume. By the end of the season, rankings are based entirely on resume. I lean heavily into head to head results and results against common opponents. I also sort teams into 6 tiers based on championship/playoff likelihood. Tier 1: Championship Frontrunners, near lock to make playoffs Tier 2: Championship Contenders with excellent chance of making playoffs Tier 3: Decent possibility to make playoffs, unlikely to compete for championship Tier 4: Outside playoff shot Tier 5: Unlikely to make playoffs but not quite eliminated Tier 6: No shot at playoffs
Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Georgia Bulldogs | Tier 1. |
| Texas Longhorns | Tier 1. Possibly must impressive win of the season so far. Only Georgia over Clemson is close. |
| Ohio State Buckeyes | Tier 1. Solid improvement week 1 to 2. |
| Alabama Crimson Tide | Tier 2. Struggles with USF a bit concerning but still a very talented team. |
| Ole Miss Rebels | Tier 2. |
| Utah Utes | Tier 2. |
| Oregon Ducks | Tier 2. Two straight weeks struggling with inferior teams drops them 5 spots. |
| Penn State Nittany Lions | Tier 2. Bit of a letdown game at home against BG. Still have a solid win and lots of talent. |
| Oklahoma Sooners | Tier 2. Struggled with a pretty bad Houston team. Tough road ahead. |
| Miami Hurricanes | Tier 3. |
| USC Trojans | Tier 3. |
| Missouri Tigers | Tier 3. |
| Oklahoma State Cowboys | Tier 3. Solid comeback against a decent Arkansas team. |
| Tennessee Volunteers | Tier 3. |
| Kansas State Wildcats | Tier 4. Solid road win vs a decent Tulane team. |
| LSU Tigers | Tier 4. Didn't look great against Nicholls. |
| Michigan Wolverines | Tier 4. Texas outclassed them but still a solid team. |
| Louisville Cardinals | Tier 4. |
| Iowa State Cyclones | Tier 4. Solid road win against Iowa. |
| Syracuse Orange | Tier 4. Win over GT deserves credit. Offense shows some promise. |
| Vanderbilt Commodores | Tier 4. |
| Clemson Tigers | Tier 4. |
| Illinois Fighting Illini | Tier 4. |
| South Carolina Gamecocks | Tier 4. |
| North Carolina Tar Heels | Tier 4. Having a road p5 win puts them just a hair over other 2-0 teams and the NIU/ND cluster. |
