Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Georgia Bulldogs | Beat bad teams like a good team should. That Clemson win looks rosier after the Tigers slaughtered App State |
| Ohio State Buckeyes | Beating bad teams like a good team should. |
| Texas Longhorns | Incredibly impressive. The rest of Michigan's season, especially the immediate next couple games, will go a long way to showing how impressive this win actually was. |
| Alabama Crimson Tide | Beating bad teams like a good team should, though it did require a thirty point fourth quarter. |
| Ole Miss Rebels | Ole Miss might be really good? |
| Tennessee Volunteers | Fantastic win over a quality opponent. |
| Missouri Tigers | Beating bad teams the way a good team should. |
| Oregon Ducks | I had Boise State ranked last week, and again this week. So I've got no qualms with a scraping victory against quality opposition. And Idaho offed Wyoming in Laramie. Skeptical on the Ducks but they stay moreorless right where I had 'em last week (teams moved out of the top ten, they didn't move into it.) |
| Miami Hurricanes | Beating bad teams the way a good team should. |
| Penn State Nittany Lions | Bowling Green may win the MAC. But c'mon. It's the MAC. Penn State had the entire second half to try and pull away in this one and stamp the victory, but still found themselves in a dog fight. A win's a win but win's like that won't do you many favors in the poll. |
| Utah Utes | Good win against a solid team. |
| USC Trojans | Beat a bad team the way a good team should. |
| Oklahoma State Cowboys | Impressive come from behind win against quality opposition. |
| Oklahoma Sooners | Not a great showing against what figures to be a bad Houston team. But plenty of teams dropped in the polls this week, so Oklahoma stays right about where they were last week. |
| Kansas State Wildcats | Tulane's a good team, so I don't hold the performance against K State too much. Moving up as a result of drops. |
| Boston College Eagles | I didn't rank BC last week, figuring that the win over FSU meant less after seeing how bad FSU was. But then BC kicked the shit out of Duquesne the way a good team is supposed to. I may have been too harsh. |
| Clemson Tigers | Clemson beat the snot out of App State. They looked like a really good ball club. Maybe Georgia is just that much better than the bottom of the Top 25. |
| Louisville Cardinals | Beat a bad team like a good team should. As the schedule gets harder, Louisville's a prime candidate to rise up these rankings pretty swiftly. |
| Arizona Wildcats | Bit of a scare for a minute against the in-state FCS rivals. But they did get it done by two scores in the end. Fifita looks the part. |
| Northern Illinois Huskies | Beat my #3 team in the country. Enough said. And they beat Notre Dame. So they're gonna be ranked over Notre Dame. |
| Vanderbilt Commodores | How about this? Vandy has looked excellent through two weeks. An absolute drubbing of Alcorn State is to be expected but even then Vandy killed 'em. Coming off a week one win over a pretty game Virginia Tech squad, the Commodores look good. VT this week handled Marshall with relative ease, so that week one win looks even better for Vanderbilt so far. |
| Boise State Broncos | Not gonna give the Broncos a hard time for a loss to the Ducks at the buzzer. Great game against a top ten opponent. I had 'em 23rd last week and now 22nd this week due to other teams dropping. |
| Michigan Wolverines | They got beat the way a bad team gets beat by a good team. They got beat the way FCS teams get beat. So the question is, how bad is Michigan or how good is Texas? Watching the game, and after the week one performance, I lean more towards Michigan being bad. Hopefully Michigan beats Arkansas State the way you'd expect. |
| Washington Huskies | They've beat bad teams the way a good team should. They were in the title game last year. They've shown they have the talent and pedigree. For now they've earned their spot here. |
| Notre Dame Fighting Irish | I had A&M ranked last week. A loss to Notre Dame isn't something to be ashamed of, I had Notre Dame ranked #3. But after their loss to NIU things got tricky down here. A&M beat McNeese State, pillar to post. Notre Dame lost to NIU. So whaddya do? I decided that maybe A&M's loss to Notre Dame was worse than it first appeared and that Notre Dame isn't quite as good as maybe I'd thought. At the same time maybe NIU is actually really good. Maybe they run undefeated through the MAC and we get out first G5 of the 12 team era from America's favorite directional conference. Hard to say. I figured what felt most fair was the move NIU up and give them the benefit of the doubt that they're pretty good, which meant I had to assume Notre Dame is still pretty good. So A&M gets bumped just outside my Top 25 this week and Notre Dame clings to the last slot under the assumption that NIU is actually a giant killer and not that ND is a total pretender. |
