bretticus33 Ballot for 2023 Week 6

Ballot Type: Human

Submitted: Oct. 1, 2023, 3:32 a.m.

Rank Team Reason
Texas Longhorns This is the point of the season where SOS and resume starts factoring in a lot more for me, and because of that Texas vaults to my #1. They beat Alabama by double-digits on the road and just beat up on a good Kansas team (even if they were without Daniels). They have a chance to separate themselves some more with a win in the RRR
Georgia Bulldogs The win streak was tested, but Georgia survived at Auburn. If games were only 15 minutes long, UGA would be in real trouble. The Bulldogs have the nation’s best point differential from 2Q to 4Q though.
Ohio State Buckeyes It was a well earned bye week for Ohio State who saw their resume get stronger with Notre Dame beating Duke on the road. I still remain skeptical of the Buckeyes offense, specifically the QB.
Florida State Seminoles Florida State was off this weekend, but because of Texas and Ohio State they drop to #3.
Michigan Wolverines Michigan’s done nothing but dominate opponents this season, but they’re 5th because they haven’t really played anyone except Rutgers. I need to see them against a real test.
Penn State Nittany Lions For one half, it looked bad for Penn State. They turned it on strong in the 2nd half and pulled away for a nice MOV. This could be PSU’s best team in the Franklin era, but we’re all waiting for them to play Michigan and Ohio State.
Washington Huskies After dominating the first month of the season, Washington played a close one against Arizona but the Huskies survived the desert. Michael Penix’s Heisman campaign took a hit though as he didn’t throw any TD passes.
Oregon Ducks Oregon ended up pulling away, but damn if buttcheeks weren’t partially clenched in Eugene. The Ducks nearly had a letdown following their demolition of CU. It’s a bye week for them (and the Huskies) before a top 10 showdown between UO and UW.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish Notre Dame was a minute away from dropping another game against a good and tough Duke team, but Sam Hartman and the defense got them through it, and Estime scored the biggest TD of his career. The CFP hopes remain alive another week for ND.
Alabama Crimson Tide Alabama is looking more complete now that the offense is truly Milroe’s. The defense is good as expected, but the offense is looking a lot more coherent lately and Alabama is still within the CFP race.
USC Trojans Good news: USC is undefeated and Caleb Williams is probably the Heisman front-runner again. Bad news: Their defense is still god awful and while it didn’t quite cost them against CU, it absolutely will against a loaded back-half of the schedule. Hence, the Trojans drop out of the top 10.
Washington State Cougars Wazzu was off this week but they benefit from chaos above and move up. Don’t underestimate the Coogs in the PAC title race.
Oklahoma Sooners Oklahoma’s defense might be for real and it’ll be interesting to see them against Texas’ offense. I’m not sure their offense is the real deal though and they might have some troubles against Texas.
Oregon State Beavers Oregon State picked up a huge win over Utah, but questions remain for me about their offense and DJU. If the Beavers can get DJU and the offense to gel more, they’re going to be a problem in the PAC.
Ole Miss Rebels Ole Miss put up Dolphins-like numbers against LSU and set SEC offensive records. It’s a huge win for Lane, who needed it after the flack he got over losing to Alabama the weekend prior, but the defense needs to find a way to not give up 49 points and 500+ yards.
North Carolina Tar Heels UNC was off this week but it was a good week for them if Duke loses.
Miami Hurricanes Miami was off this week but it was a good week for them if Florida loses.
Missouri Tigers Missouri is a weird team. They don’t seem like a team that should be undefeated and/or ranked, yet they are. I struggle to see Mizzou beating Georgia in the East, but they should be competitive again.
Kentucky Wildcats Kentucky was owned for decades by Florida, but now the roles are reversed. They ran all over Florida and dominated defensively. Stoops continues to be a great and underrated coach.
Duke Blue Devils Talk about a heartbreaker for Duke. Not only did the defense play well but falter in the biggest moment against Notre Dame, they may have lost their star QB for a while when he got hurt on the game-sealing fumble.
Tennessee Volunteers Tennessee won comfortably over SCAR, but they didn’t resolve any of their issues IMO and losing Bru McCoy is going to hurt the offense.
Utah Utes Utah has a great defense, but their offense is a HUGE problem right now. I know they’re playing without Cam Rising, but he was supposed to be back a couple weeks ago so until Utah gets Rising back, they’ll stay lower.
Fresno State Bulldogs Fresno State is still my top G5 program with a comfortable win over Nevada, but it was a bit sloppy from them. They’ll playing a tough one against Wyoming in Laramie next weekend, and that game could go a long way in determining who plays for the MWC title.
Air Force Falcons Air Force has one of the nation’s longest win streaks and this team is cruising. They crushed SDSU to move to 5-0 and it looks like every unit of this team is clicking. AFA is fully in the hunt for a NY6 spot.
LSU Tigers LSU is arguably the country’s most disappointing team. The defense has been a complete disaster and made Ole Miss look like the Miami Dolphins. Daniels has played well and it’s hard to blame him for a loss when LSU scores 49. The issues are all on the defensive side of the ball.
