SpursUpSoundsGudToMe Ballot for 2023 Week 5

Ballot Type: Hybrid

Submitted: Sept. 25, 2023, 10:37 p.m.

Overall Rationale: a little more influence from the computer this week, there are some weird looking clumps of teams from the same conference close together, I don't really have an explanation for that lol, just coincidental...

Rank Team Reason
Georgia Bulldogs I'm simply no moving a 2 time defending champ until someone actually beats them, sue me...
Washington Huskies Haven't played a big time game yet, so they could drop lock a rock with a loss, but so far they have absolutely walked the dog(s) on everyone they've played so far
Texas Longhorns have one of the best wins of the year and did it by two scores
Penn State Nittany Lions My algorithm has a slight bonus for shutting someone out, simply because that is a really difficult thing to do, they also scored 31 on a very good defense. They also crushed what turned out to be a pretty good WVU team.
Ohio State Buckeyes Boy, they got the win, but the offense still seemed like a problem. They would be 4th if ND had 11 men on the field...
Oklahoma Sooners Probably much higher than most, but my algorithm really really liked that first game, 73-0 is a preposterous thing to do to an FBS team, even a bad one (and hell, Ark St won a conference game on Saturday). I think their defense is fully legit, even if the O has been more up and down.
Florida State Seminoles Still have a good win, and winning at Clemson is not easy, even if they are down a bit. Did not look impressive at BC though.
Michigan Wolverines Kinda been on autopilot so far, which is fair considering the coaching situation. Ultimately they haven't done anything bad or impressive so far.
Oregon Ducks Yooooo, that was a humbling... Lanning knows line play and Oregon might be really really good. My top 9 are all really close together, so I see them fully as a contender.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish Tough break, what a massive coaching mistake. I still think this roster is really good and an elite OL.
Alabama Crimson Tide their loss isn't that damning, and got a nice win.
Washington State Cougars PAC CHAMPS!
Utah Utes Toughest team in American, should be able to really do some things when healthy, I would really like them to win the PAC-12 south if such a thing still existed.
USC Trojans The defense is offensive... they are giving up a lot of yardage and points to some abysmal teams, the algo likes them but doesn't love them, I have a lot of doubts, could easily be a 4 loss team by the end.
North Carolina Tar Heels Their interesting, but I harbor doubts, will learn a lot when they host Miami on Oct. 14th.
Duke Blue Devils Been somewhat quiet since the Clemson game, comfortably beating bad teams. They appear to be legit, but I have a lot more faith in ND's roster this coming weekend.
Miami Hurricanes Similar to UNC, I'm intrigued but not sold, the UNC game will be a major inflection point for both teams, the winner will be in great shape for the ACCCG contention
Fresno State Bulldogs contender for best of the G5, my algo likes a shutout and they shut out a P5 that scored 28 on So Cal... I hate that they went to OT with an FCS, but love that they've beaten two P5s and annihilated a MAC team. I think the Mountain West is really strong this year, interested to see where this goes.
LSU Tigers Tough one to figure out, I don't think Arkansas is bad so winning close it ok, and losing to FSU is fine, but its looking a bit rickety. Massive win over a Ms St. team that looked a lot better last week is doing them a lot of favors, but it's possible Ms St just had a disaster game and LSU has some problems that only FSU has exposed so far.
Missouri Tigers KState is just off my list so that win is going a long way. Memphis is not bad. Not sure we'll really have answers about Mizzou until early Oct when they host LSU, like UNC-Miami, it will be enlightening about both teams.
Florida Gators IDK what to do with these guys or Tennessee, but they made Tennessee look pretty pedestrian so they are in the 18-32 "Pretty good I guess" Shrug Zone. Kentucky is almost certainly better than Charlotte on defense so we'll see.
Tulane Green Wave Tulane is still really really good on defense and that will let them play with anybody, I'm not sure I see another loss on their schedule, will explain the ranking more next with Ole Miss.
Ole Miss Rebels My eyes and the algo don't love Ole Miss, have only really impressed against an FCS. You may think it odd to have them behind Tulane, but check out how that game ended, it was much closer than the score makes it appear (it was a 7 point game with 3 minutes left) and Tulane did not have their starting QB. I think if you played that game this coming week Tulane would win.
Tennessee Volunteers who knows man, another where my eyes, nor the algorithm love it, I don't love the defense, and I don't love Milton and I don't love the WRs, but i''m giving them the benefit of the doubt from last year because there is no slam dunk case for anyone else to be above them. No one else undefeated right now has played a game as difficult as going to The Swamp.
Louisville Cardinals KState, Kansas, Air Force, Texas A&M, Kentucky and Louisville are all inseparable on my algorithm, Louisville gets the nod for now because they could have easily scored 70 on BC this week if they wanted to, they ran the clock out by running about 20 times in row. They didn't punt until the game was basically over and the way they killed the 4th qt off was impressive too.
