romulusjsp Ballot for 2023 Week 5

Ballot Type: Human

Submitted: Sept. 25, 2023, 10:34 a.m.

Overall Rationale: I think there's finally enough sample size to at least attempt to make serious judgements about teams but I still feel like we no so little about everyone. I reference my previous ballot when creating my new one, I am trying to be better about defaulting to my previous rankings of teams.

Rank Team Reason
Georgia Bulldogs (-) Although no team looks head-and-shoulders elite this season, for me UGA is still number one until proven otherwise.
Michigan Wolverines (-) Pat McAfee predicted that Rutgers would upset the Wolverines lmao
Penn State Nittany Lions (+1) What a brave showing in the face of an absolute offensive juggernaut masterminded by the maestro, the savant, the great innovator of our time, Brian Ferentz
Ohio State Buckeyes (+1) Feels dirty only moving them up one after a huge win, but I can't justify putting them ahead of the three above.
Florida State Seminoles (-2) The Noles have squeaked by in back to back weeks, but Ws are Ws.
Texas Longhorns (-) Texas has the biggest win by far of any team this season, yet I remain slightly unconvinced.
Washington Huskies (-) I'm not gonna lie, I was drunk by the time this game was on. Being an East Coast fan of West Coast football is rough
Utah Utes (-) Utah's defense, at its best, has a serious argument for being the best in college football. Utah's offense, at least without Rising, has a serious argument for being one of the worst (it is still better than Iowa's).
Alabama Crimson Tide (+1) In a strange way, Bama has kind of come all the way back around to being oddly underrated.
Oregon Ducks (+7) Big jump partly in response to the demonstrative win over the Buffs, but also simply because I had been underranking them before.
USC Trojans (-2) Games after dark in Tempe are weird, but a team held together with sawdust and rubber cement should not be playing a supposed playoff contender at that margin. I remain thoroughly unconvinced by USC, eventually their defense will get punished to an extent that Williams can't Superman his way out of it.
Duke Blue Devils (+2) GameDay at Duke is genuinely so exciting
Washington State Cougars (+8) How bittersweet
Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-2) Hard to punish ND too much for their loss, but Freeman has some serious explaining to do
Oklahoma Sooners (+8) I had been disrespecting the Sooners for whatever reason to this point. They look solid and it's looking more and more like the RRS will be a de facto Big XII championship.
Maryland Terrapins (-) The Terps haven't played anyone that could accurately be described as "good" yet, but I maintain that they are likely to beat at least one team they supposedly "shouldn't" this season.
North Carolina Tar Heels (+1) Still hard to tell if the robbery win against App was an aberration, the Heels have otherwise looked very solid
Fresno State Bulldogs (+1) Token Mountain West team finally made it onto the national polls. The Bulldogs will likely be favored in every remaining game this year, but the big test will be @ Wyoming in two weeks.
Kansas Jayhawks (+3) Anybody that beats BYU gets a boost from me :) big test this weekend in Austin.
Miami Hurricanes (+5) Competent Miami is interesting, but I think we're all just waiting to see how they manage to fuck it up this season.
LSU Tigers (+3) I think this week's game will tell us so much about both LSU and Ole Miss
Oregon State Beavers (-11) Dam.
Ole Miss Rebels (-10) See #21
Missouri Tigers (NR) The Tigers are sneaky good thus far. The Border War needs to return as soon as possible.
Colorado Buffaloes (-10) Tough break, but I think we all saw this coming eventually. In many ways, this season is already a victory for Buffs fans, and I do still think they will finish with a respectable record. /// DROPPED OUT: UCLA
