Meany_Vizzini Ballot for 2022 Week 10

Ballot Type: Computer

Submitted: Oct. 31, 2022, 10:57 p.m.

Overall Rationale: Accelerated ELO Rankings

Rank Team Reason
Tennessee Volunteers 30.2, +0.7 from last week, +2 positions from last week, 37.8 (1st) in win/loss aELO, 22.6 (4th) in margin of victory aELO. Another dominant win is enough for Tennessee to take the top spot for the first time this year.
Georgia Bulldogs 29.8, +0.2, -, 32.4 (4th), 27.2 (1st). The difference between Georgia and Tennessee is negligible. Next week will decide who should be #1.
TCU Horned Frogs 27.9, -0.9, +1, 35.5 (2nd), 20.3 (5th). TCU drops slightly vs the field after a somewhat close matchup against West Virginia, but they still gain a position due to the ACC Atlantic collapse.
Clemson Tigers 26.4, -7.0, -3, 33.8 (3rd), 18.9 (7th). The ACC Atlantic used to look invulnerable. Then Syracuse got stomped by Notre Dame, NC State almost lost to Virginia Tech, and Boston College got beat by UConn. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team drop so far on a bye week, but then again, I can’t remember the last time a lauded division collapsed so completely in a single week.
Ohio State Buckeyes 26.0, +4.6, +5, 27.5 (5th), 24.5 (2nd). The Buckeyes have finally faced someone, Paaaauuuul! Though their margin of victory is generally stellar, their resume still lags behind the top 3 due to strength of schedule.
Alabama Crimson Tide 24.3, +0.2, -1, 25.2 (7th), 23.3 (3rd). Little change on the bye week for the Tide.
Michigan Wolverines 22.9, -1.1, -1, 26.5 (6th), 19.4 (6th). A win against rival Michigan State barely moved the needle. Penn State’s loss at home makes Michigan’s best win look slightly less impressive.
Oregon Ducks 19.6, +0.7, +5, 22.6 (8th), 16.5 (11th). Oregon hardly moved vs the field, but the fall of Oklahoma State and the ACC Atlantic sees them climb into the top 10 for the first time this year.
Kansas State Wildcats 19.4, +3.2, +6, 20.1 (9th), 18.6 (8th). Where did that come from? The Wildcats made Oklahoma State look like a generic FCS school, and that vaults them into the top 10 for the first time this year.
LSU Tigers 18.9, -0.7, +1, 18.3 (11th), 18.4 (9th). Little change on the bye week for the Tigers.
Oklahoma State Cowboys 17.1, -5.2, -2, 18.6 (13th), 15.5 (12th). After being thoroughly embarrassed, the Cowboys drop precipitously vs the field but only drop 2 spots, thanks in part to the ACC Atlantic collapse.
UCLA Bruins 15.9, +1.8, +8, 19.4 (10th), 12.3 (18th). The Bruins’ rise is more due to other teams falling than their win against Stanford this week.
USC Trojans 15.2, -0.6, +3, 16.0 (16th), 14.4 (14th). The Trojans climb after an underwhelming win due to others falling.
Ole Miss Rebels 15.2, -0.3, +3, 19.2 (12th), 11.1 (23rd). It wasn’t the close win against Texas A&M boosting Ole Miss, it was other teams falling.
Tulane Green Wave 14.5, +0.9, +6, 17.3 (14th), 11.6 (21st). Tulane keeps winning, others keep losing, and their win over Kansas State keeps looking better and better.
Texas Longhorns 14.3, -1.1, +2, 11.9 (23rd), 16.6 (10th). The Longhorns are worse vs the field after Oklahoma State’s embarrassment, but the ACC Atlantic collapse still allows Texas to move up a couple spots on the bye week.
Florida State Seminoles 14.2, -3.7, -3, 13.0 (22nd), 15.3 (13th). After a dominant win against Georgia Tech, Florida State drops a few spots. That’s because the computer has reevaluated the relative strength of the ACC Atlantic after less-than-stellar results from Syracuse, NC State, and Boston College.
Utah Utes 13.8, +0.9, +4, 13.6 (20th), 13.9 (15th). The Utes move up due to Penn State’s loss and the ACC Atlantic collapse.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons 13.7, -10.1, -12, 14.3 (19th), 13.0 (17th). Wake Forest was dominated by Louisville in the third quarter from hell. Add to that the calamitous results from Syracuse, NC State, and Boston College, and Wake Forest falls more than 10 spots and more than 10 points vs the field.
Syracuse Orange 13.5, -9.0, -12, 15.4 (17th), 11.5 (22nd). Notre Dame beat Syracuse convincingly this week. Other terrible results for the ACC Atlantic see the Orange drop 12 places.
Penn State Nittany Lions 13.3, -1.4, -2, 14.9 (18th), 11.7 (20th). Yes, Penn State lost, but it was to Ohio State, so they only drop a few spots.
NC State Wolfpack 13.0, -6.3, -10, 16.5 (15th), 9.6 (27th). A 1-point home win certainly feels like a loss, and the computer agrees. Add to that bad losses from Syracuse and Boston College, and NC State falls 10 spots with a win.
Mississippi State Bulldogs 12.4, +0.1, +1, 11.1 (26th), 13.6 (16th). Little change on the bye week for the Bulldogs.
North Carolina Tar Heels 12.2, NR, 13.2 (21st), 11.1 (25th). A solid win against Pitt is enough for the Tar Heels to enter the rankings for the first time this year. In an incredibly congested section of the rankings, they are only 2.3 points behind 15th place Tulane.
Oklahoma Sooners 11.0, NR, 11.2 (1st), 10.8 (26th). Oklahoma’s recovery over the past few weeks is just enough to earn a ranking for the first time since Week 4. No honorable mentions this week.
