Rank | Team | Reason |
---|---|---|
| Georgia Bulldogs | Georgia stays atop the rankings after having a scare and momentarily letting Florida back into the game. This was a game where I would have liked to see a bit more from Stetson Bennett but we’ve seen Georgia win because of him and win without him playing great. Huge CFP and SEC ramifications coming up against Tennessee next weekend. |
| Tennessee Volunteers | Tennessee is the 1B to Georgia’s 1A. The offense went off again and the defense shut down whatever Kentucky tried to do. Tennessee’s dream season could hit new heights against Georgia in a battle for #1 in the country. |
| Ohio State Buckeyes | It looked for about 50 minutes like Ohio State was going to fail their first big test of the season, but a 28-10 explosion in the final 10 minutes made it a comfortable win instead. Stroud didn’t do a ton to help his Heisman candidacy but did enough to help Ohio State win. The defense did alright but the tackling could improve. JTT had one of the most dominant individual defensive performances I’ve ever seen. |
| Michigan Wolverines | Michigan beat the first of their main rivals pretty easily and remain undefeated on the season. Their ground attack and defense will grind down all but a few teams in the country and that’s exactly what it did to Michigan State. We’re all still waiting to see what JJ is capable of in a big game but he may not need to with how the team around him is playing. |
| Clemson Tigers | Clemson was off this week but eagerly await to see where the committee places them on Tuesday ahead of their road trip to Notre Dame. |
| TCU Horned Frogs | TCU escaped a trap game against WVU to remain undefeated. Thanks to Oklahoma State losing, TCU is comfortably within the top 2 in the Big 12 and well on track to play for the conference championship. Their offense remains explosive and their defensive coordinator is great at in-game adjustments. |
| Oregon Ducks | Oregon continues their excellent play over the last couple months with a road win over Cal. Bo Nix had another strong game and the defense is turning into a very strong unit. If this Ducks team were to play Georgia again, I don’t think they’re losing by 40. |
| Alabama Crimson Tide | Alabama had the week off before facing LSU and I anticipate they’ll be hoping to see their name called as one of the first two out, if not in the top 4. |
| UCLA Bruins | UCLA didn’t let PAC-12 after dark get to them and took care of Stanford quite easily. The Bruins are still one of the sports’ nice surprises with how DTR has broken out, the offense has exploded, and the defense has mostly played well. |
| Illinois Fighting Illini | Illinois makes the top 10 at 7-1 and leading the Big 10 West. They’re playing exactly like a Bret Beliema team with excellent suffocating defense and a strong running game. I don’t think anybody is better in the Big 10 outside of Ohio State and Michigan. |
| Kansas State Wildcats | Kansas State now owns probably the 2nd most impressive win of the season with their complete skullfucking of Oklahoma State without Adrian Martinez. This was just about a perfect game from the Wildcats and has to make you wonder what could have happened against TCU had Martinez not gotten hurt. |
| Utah Utes | Utah survived Thursday craziness against Washington State to get Kyle Wittingham his 150th FBS win, all of them as Utah’s HC. The Utes are obviously very good but also very inconsistent. Utah is the 2nd best 2-loss team in the country to me. |
| USC Trojans | USC’s first action after losing to Utah was escaping Arizona. The Wildcats themselves are on the right track, but USC shouldn’t have been in a close game with them. Their offense played well as expected but their defense was a disappointment. |
| LSU Tigers | LSU was off but rise again thanks to the chaos around them. They should be in the committee’s top 25 and will rise more if they beat Alabama in Death Valley. |
| Ole Miss Rebels | Ole Miss rebounded from their first loss with a win over Texas A&M, but it was closer than it probably should have been. However, A&M is still a very talented team, as Kiffin pointed out postgame, and road games are rarely easy. |
| North Carolina Tar Heels | UNC looks like they’re getting it together. The defense that couldn’t get a stop at first is now a competent, coherent unit. The offense is continuing to surge and QB Drake Maye will enter next season as a preseason Heisman favorite. |
| Wake Forest Demon Deacons | If not for Oklahoma State, Wake Forest would have had the most embarrassing loss this weekend. The Deacons finally hit top 10 and followed it up with a catastrophic 3rd quarter where they turned it over 5 times. Wake won’t drop out of the top 25 entirely but they showed they live and die by their offense. |
| Tulane Green Wave | Tulane didn’t play this weekend, but thanks to UCF, they should be in the pole position to get the top G5 spot in Tuesday’s CFP rankings. Tulane in a NY6 bowl? Who woulda thought. |
| Oregon State Beavers | Oregon State rises thanks to a lot of losses in front of them. They have a road trip to Washington that should provide a tricky test but a winnable one. |
| Maryland Terrapins | Maryland rises thanks to losses and chaos in front of them. |
| Oklahoma State Cowboys | Oklahoma State provided the most embarrassing loss of this weekend and arguably this season. This team is very good, that’s not up for debate. However they didn’t look anything like it against Kansas State as their defense was shat all over, their offense couldn’t move the ball, and Gundy was just flat out coached. This loss definitely takes them out of playoff contention and likely Big 12 contention too. |
| NC State Wolfpack | NC State scraped by Virginia Tech. What promised to be a great season turned sour with a couple losses and missing Devin Leary is going to hurt NC State in the long run. From here on, NC State is likely a fringe top 25 team. |
| Liberty Flames | Liberty is off this week but travel to Arkansas. They’re ineligible for the G5’s NY6 spot and can’t make an at-large bid with a loss on their weak schedule, but a win over the Razorbacks would be huge for them. |
| Penn State Nittany Lions | This Saturday showcased the problems with James Franklin and Sean Clifford. Franklin’s PSU teams frequently shit themselves in clutch time against top opponents, like they did against Ohio State and Michigan, and they keep finishing second fiddle despite being clearly talented. Sean Clifford provided another shitty game with 4 turnovers and it was too much for Penn State to overcome. |
| Syracuse Orange | Syracuse has a legitimate QB problem, even if Schrader is going to be ok. Their defense is solid and they have some good pieces on offense but this is the 2nd straight week in a row their QB play was atrocious and killed Syracuse. |
