TheJeemTeam Ballot for 2019 Week 14

Ballot Type: Hybrid

Submitted: Nov. 25, 2019, 6:31 p.m.

Overall Rationale: My poll is a hybrid. I take the results of a computer poll of my own creation and split the teams into tiers based on where it makes sense to break the values. I then look at just the teams within the tiers and re-rank within them based on my observations and feelings of the teams.Computer poll has a preseason component and a performance-based component. I phase the preseason component out as the season goes along. For this week, the preseason component is down to 2.5% of the overall calculation.

Rank Team Reason
Ohio State Buckeyes 1/1 in Tier A
Clemson Tigers 1/1 in Tier Ba
LSU Tigers 1/1 in Tier Bb
Alabama Crimson Tide 1/1 in Tier Bc
Oklahoma Sooners 1/1 in Tier Bd
Georgia Bulldogs 1/1 in Tier Be
Utah Utes 1/4 in Tier C: Only team in tier with 1 loss. Best looking team of group on Offense and Defense
Penn State Nittany Lions 2/4 in Tier C: Better losses than Wisconsin (Ohio State and Minnesota)
Wisconsin Badgers 3/4 in Tier C: Loss to Illinois keeps them below Penn State
Michigan Wolverines 4/4 in Tier C: Easy to slot here given head to head losses to Penn State and Wisconsin
Baylor Bears 1/2 in Tier D: Only one loss and it was a close one to Oklahoma
Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2/2 in Tier D: Blowout loss to Michigan ends up being the difference here
Memphis Tigers 1/2 in Tier E: Only 1 loss and a better best win (Navy) than Oregon (USC)
Oregon Ducks 2/2 in Tier E: Loss to Auburn proves to be the difference as the Arizona State loss is comparable in quality to Memphis' only loss to Temple.
Florida Gators 1/2 in Tier F: Better record than Auburn and owns a head to head victory
Auburn Tigers 2/2 in Tier F
Minnesota Golden Gophers 1/3 in Tier G: Iowa did beat Minnesota head to head, but it was only by 4 points and in Iowa. Against common opponents (Purdue, Illinois, Northwestern, Penn State, Rutgers), Minnesota is 5-0, while Iowa is 4-1. Additionally, they have outscored those teams by an average of 17.2 points, while Iowa has only outscored them by an average of 12.0 points.
Cincinnati Bearcats 2/3 in Tier G: If they had played Ohio State closer, I may have them ahead of Minnesota. As it is, it's hard to overlook the 42-0 loss, despite the quality of Ohio State.
Iowa Hawkeyes 3/3 in Tier G: Behind Minnesota for the reasons stated above. Behind both Minnesota and Cincinnati due to the fact that it's hard to overlook the 3 losses (compared to only 1 for the other two), regardless of the quality of the teams they lost to.
Navy Midshipmen 1/1 in Tier H
Boise State Broncos 1/6 in Tier I: Better loss than App State's (BYU compared with Georgia Southern)
Appalachian State Mountaineers 2/6 in Tier I: Head to Head win over Louisiana-Lafayette
Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns 3/6 in Tier I: Only losses are to App State and Miss St. Puts them ahead of the other teams despite the lesser pedigree.
Iowa State Cyclones 4/6 in Tier I: Only 7-4, but every team to beat them is of high caliber
UCF Knights 5/6 in Tier I: Get the edge over USC for the final spot.
