Ballot Type: Hybrid
Submitted: Sept. 23, 2019, 7:20 p.m.
Overall Rationale: My poll is a hybrid. I take the results of a computer poll of my own creation and split the teams into tiers based on where it makes sense to break the values. I then look at just the teams within the tiers and re-rank within them based on my observations and feelings of the teams.Computer poll has a preseason component and a performance-based component. I phase the preseason component out as the season goes along. For this week, the preseason component is still 40% of the overall calculation.
| Rank | Team | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1 |
Clemson Tigers
|
1/1 in Tier A: Ya, only team here. They've been the #1 team according to my computer every week, and they've been in a Tier by themselves every week except once. Not likely to be challenged much the rest of the regular season, but it's still college football, so there's always the possibility of a shock upset. |
| 2 |
Alabama Crimson Tide
|
1/3 in Tier B: Like Clemson, they've been consistently ranked in the same spot by my computer. Despite having other teams in a tier with them this week, I see no reason to move them down. |
| 3 |
Ohio State Buckeyes
|
2/3 in Tier B: Ohio State leapfrogs UGA. Undefeated against lesser competition, but they've dominated every game. |
| 4 |
Georgia Bulldogs
|
3/3 in Tier B: Drops due to struggling against what is, in my opinion, an overrated Notre Dame team |
| 5 |
Auburn Tigers
|
1/2 in Tier C: A couple of SEC West teams share this tier. Though LSU has been dominant and has what looks to be a hell of an offense, I'll give the edge to Auburn for now due to their quality wins over Oregon and Texas A&M. |
| 6 |
LSU Tigers
|
2/2 in Tier C |
| 7 |
Wisconsin Badgers
|
1/2 in Tier D: Give edge over Oklahoma due to extremely dominant defensive performances to open the season. |
| 8 |
Oklahoma Sooners
|
2/2 in Tier D |
| 9 |
Florida Gators
|
1/5 in Tier E: Close shaves against Miami (FL) and Kentucky, but they're still undefeated after taking care of business against Tennessee. |
| 10 |
Penn State Nittany Lions
|
2/5 in Tier E: Close win over Pitt looks better after the Panthers upset of Central Florida. |
| 11 |
Oregon Ducks
|
3/5 in Tier E: Only loss is a close one to Auburn and have otherwise looked dominant against lesser competition. Likely the Pac-12 North favorite right now. |
| 12 |
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
|
4/5 in Tier E: Hung with UGA better than I thought they would. Still think they're not a Top 10 caliber team though. |
| 13 |
Michigan State Spartans
|
5/5 in Tier E: My computer continues to love the Spartans. Rebounded for a nice win over Northwestern, but I'm not sure I'd even rank them if I was doing a human poll. This is as low as my hybrid system will let me put them. |
| 14 |
Texas Longhorns
|
1/5 in Tier F: Only loss was a close one to LSU. Easily looks like the best team in this tier. |
| 15 |
Iowa Hawkeyes
|
2/5 in Tier F |
| 16 |
Boise State Broncos
|
3/5 in Tier F: Unimpressed so far, but they are undefeated. |
| 17 |
Michigan Wolverines
|
4/5 in Tier F: Double OT win over Army and a blowout loss to Wisconsin is not how this season was supposed to start for Michigan. Currently in free fall. |
| 18 |
Mississippi State Bulldogs
|
5/5 in Tier F: Only loss is to a good Kansas State team. I know Kansas State is ranked below them. This is as low as my system will let me rank them and sometimes lower ranked teams beat higher ranked teams. |
| 19 |
Oklahoma State Cowboys
|
1/4 in Tier G: Only loss was a close one to Texas. |
| 20 |
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
|
2/4 in Tier G: Not buying them yet, but they are undefeated and it looks like Clawson put together a pretty good team. |
| 21 |
UCF Knights
|
3/4 in Tier G: Win over Stanford looks less impressive since they're now 1-3 with loss to Oregon. Finally lost a regular season game to Pitt this weekend.Hail to Pitt! |
| 22 |
Washington Huskies
|
4/4 in Tier G: Only loss was by 1 point to Cal, who are undefeated. However, I think Cal is massively overrated (I don't even have them ranked), so that's actually even more of a negative for them. |
| 23 |
Virginia Cavaliers
|
1/5 in Tier H: Still the Coastal favorite IMO, despite struggling against Old Dominion. Still undefeated, but for how long? |
| 24 |
Kansas State Wildcats
|
2/5 in Tier H |
| 25 |
USC Trojans
|
3/5 in Tier H: Get in ahead of other two teams in this tier (Iowa State and Baylor) due to the good win over Utah and their only loss being a close one to BYU. |
