TheJeemTeam Ballot for 2018 Week 5

Ballot Type: Hybrid

Submitted: Sept. 24, 2018, 6:37 p.m.

Overall Rationale: My hybrid poll utilizes two computer polls. A preseason component that I will phase out as the season goes along and a results-oriented poll. The preseason component is 40% this week and the results-oriented poll is 60%.The Preseason component is made up of Past season's results, Returning production, 2 year recruiting Avg., and Coaching continuity. The results-oriented component is made up of Winning %, Points per Game differential, Yards per Play differential, and Strength of Schedule. Once the overall rankings are developed, I split the teams that are close to each other into tiers and re-rank within the tiers. The remainder of the final tier (Tier J) that did not fit into the Top 25 and therefore just missed out on being ranked by me were Boise St., Ole Miss, and Michigan St.

Rank Team Reason
Alabama Crimson Tide 1/1 in Tier A
Georgia Bulldogs 1/2 in Tier B: Have blown out every opponent
Clemson Tigers 2/2 in Tier B: Close win over TAMU keeps them below UGA
Ohio State Buckeyes 1/1 in Tier C
Penn State Nittany Lions 1/1 in Tier D
Oklahoma Sooners 1/1 in Tier E
Notre Dame Fighting Irish 1/2 in Tier F: Head-to-head win over Michigan makes this a very easy tier to determine
Michigan Wolverines 2/2 in Tier F
Stanford Cardinal 1/5 in Tier G: Undefeated w/ quality wins over Oregon and USC
West Virginia Mountaineers 2/5 in Tier G: Blown out all opponents, but only 3 games played keeps them beneath Stanford
Washington Huskies 3/5 in Tier G: Quality loss to Auburn by 5 puts them above Miami
Miami Hurricanes 4/5 in Tier G: Quality loss to LSU, but by 16 pts. Have looked relatively unimpressive otherwise as well
Mississippi State Bulldogs 5/5 in Tier G: My computer loves them, but 3 TD loss to Kentucky puts them at bottom of this tier
UCF Knights 1/3 in Tier H
Wisconsin Badgers 2/3 in Tier H: Loss to BYU puts them behind UCF
Duke Blue Devils 3/3 in Tier H: Most unimpressive 4-0 team in the country in my opinion. Would put them at the fringes of the rankings if I did a human poll, but this is the lowest I can put them based on my hybrid methodology.
Auburn Tigers 1/3 in Tier I: 1 pt. loss to LSU is only loss. Highest quality of tier.
South Carolina Gamecocks 2/3 in Tier I: Only loss is to #2 UGA
Florida Gators 3/3 in Tier I:11 pt. loss to Kentucky is worst loss in this tier of one-loss teams
LSU Tigers 1/9 in Tier J: If I did a human poll, I would probably rank them higher, but they have a relatively low value in the preseason component of the ranking, keeping them so far down.
Kentucky Wildcats 2/9 in Tier J: Undefeated w/ impressive wins over Florida & Miss. St.
Boston College Eagles 3/9 in Tier J: Big loss to Purdue hurts, but not enough to drop them out.
Appalachian State Mountaineers 4/9 in Tier J: Only loss to OT to PSU
Memphis Tigers 5/9 in Tier J: Only loss by 1 to Navy
Oklahoma State Cowboys 6/9 in Tier J: Bad loss to Texas Tech, but I judged that they're better than 2 of my other options (Mich. St./Ole Miss) and they have a Head-to-head win over the 3rd (Boise St.)
