hokies220 Ballot for 2017 Week 5

Ballot Type: Human

Submitted: Sept. 24, 2017, 11:45 a.m.

Overall Rationale: Mostly try to make it resume based. Top four are who I'd pick right now.

Rank Team Reason
Clemson Tigers Game against BC was uglier than the score, but they still have three P5 wins, with two of them still ranked in the AP poll. I'm obviously not as high on Auburn. Should be favored this week in another big game.
Alabama Crimson Tide I had Vandy at 16 last week. I expected Bama to win a relatively close, low scoring game. I was completely and utterly wrong.
USC Trojans Three P5 wins and I think this one over Cal is very respectable. They go on the road to Pullman, get a breather against the Beavs and then get Notre Dame and Utah back to back. Good luck.
TCU Horned Frogs I was likely way too high on OK State, but to get a 13 point win on the road and control the game and the clock so well deserves praise.
Duke Blue Devils There are three teams right now with three P5 wins. Clemson, USC, and Duke. They host Miami this Friday. Big game in the ACC Coastal.
Oklahoma Sooners I still really like the win @ Ohio State. But the struggle to finish off Baylor isn't a great look.
Georgia Bulldogs Well. Wow. They did to Miss State what Miss State did to LSU.
Penn State Nittany Lions Iowa is a solid team and they've upset several top 5 teams recently so escaping with a last second TD isn't that bad or concerning IMO.
Michigan Wolverines Michigan keeps giving me reasons to not rank them so high, but the defense is just too good to be ignored. They have a bye then get MSU and Indiana before going to Happy Valley. The schedule is very backloaded and that could be an issue.
San Diego State Aztecs With their two Pac-12 victims both notching wins and being able to come back and win against Air Force I really don't see how people can rank USF ahead of them for the top G5 slot.
Washington Huskies They got just what they needed against Colorado to soar up my rankings. They're absolutely the team to beat in the division like most people expected anyways.
Wisconsin Badgers I know I try to be as resume based as I can and right now the Badgers don't have that impressive of wins at all. It's just that they've looked so dominant doing it especially in the second half.
Virginia Tech Hokies Ugh. VT really doesn't deserve to be this high, but who would I replace them with. They have a win against 3-1 WVU, are 4-0,  and have two shutouts. But ECU, ODU, and FCS team are trash. And WVU also has wins against ECU, FCS, and KU trash. We'll find out reallll quick how good the Hokies actually are against Clemson.
Texas Tech Red Raiders With ASU beating Oregon they took a slight bump up. Beating Houston on the road helped bump them up as well. I know they're too high. I know the resume could be attacked and justifiably so. Outside of my top 12 I think there's just such a big pile of mediocre teams.
Utah Utes I don't know how serious the injury is to Huntley, but they have a bye this week and Williams came in and did ok. The schedule is still brutal though, but I respect getting a division win on the road against a team that has given them trouble. They have the Washington schools, Oregon, and Stanford from the North still on top of USC and Colorado.
Washington State Cougars Well. The Boise win took a big hit. But at least Wazzu has murdered their other three opponents. This is another case of the wins being trash and getting a real test against USC this weekend.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish I hate hate hate hate the whole quality loss argument. That being said though Notre Dame does have a one point loss to Georgia and has looked just fine(mostly) against BC and MSU.
Oklahoma State Cowboys Tulsa, USA, and pitt all lost as well. They got beat at home by 13. OK State was not deserving of the top 10, but most of us bought into the hype.
Louisville Cardinals Gets the nod over Cal for a better win against UNC, Purdue being better than Ole Miss and not scheduling/struggling with FCS team. Still got murdered by Clemson though.
California Golden Bears It's my fault I didn't have Cal ranked last week I just completely forgot, I even had them written down. Played better than a lot probably expected against USC. If they didn't turn the ball over so many times, including inside the ten. This game could've been even closer.
Ohio State Buckeyes The win against Indiana is solid. Beating up Army and UNLV looks nice, but doesn't help much after being exposed so badly against OU.
USF Bulls The defense really took care of Temple even when Flowers had a bad game. Maybe Houston can challenge them? Otherwise they should roll into the game against UCF undefeated.
UCF Knights With how they took care of Maryland it really makes me wish they could've played GT. Memphis is up next and they get a little tougher draw with games @SMU and Navy as well. If UCF rolls into the War on I4 undefeated they'll definitely be more tested than USF.
West Virginia Mountaineers Mainly see what I mentioned in the VT slot. Beat trash teams so we don't know how good they are. Until this weekend.
Florida Gators I really didn't want to rank the Gators. They're two bad defensive plays away from being 0-3. But they are 2-1 with two division wins and therefore have a better argument than Navy or Iowa or Memphis to be #25 IMO.
